Does anyone here own a timeshare? Or have any experiences (good or bad) with them? My SO and I went to a presentation and was thinking about buying one.

it always seems sketchy.  Who gets the good holidays like labor day, independence day, memorial day, etc?

You pay to share ownership of a condo or vacation spot, so you can visit it at a select time every year, like a week or so. Then after buying it you pay annual maintenance fees. So for example, you pay $18,000 for the condo and then $800 annually for 20 years for maintenance.

It's a money pit. Don't do it.

18,000!  And they try to tell you that you spend much more on hotels if you total it up for x amount of years, but who wants to vacation in the same place every year?  I guess people in the hamptons, but lake havasu or lake Tahoe? Please.

My parents have two.....a three bedroom and a 4 bedroom.
You can use them anywhere that the company has resorts.

oh yeah, I forgot about that option.  I saw a documentary called The Queen of Versailles about Westgate Resorts timeshare...they were shady and had places all over.

How often do you guys use them?

Every time I've read the math for timeshare it's cheaper or on par to just vacation regularly, plus unlimited options on where.

my mom has one w/ a friend and we use it in certain places, but yeah, it's a money pit. i think they just sold it or they're about to.

Yeah, we have a Westgate resort and just got back from Orlando.  It was very nice, but yeah...we wouldn't do it again if we could do it over again.  They're also a pain to get rid of.

it was interesting...the wife was truly delusional and the husband was just piling on the debt to uphold a lifestyle that was crashing down.  their house was a mess.  the maid lived in the dollhouse in the backyard. Confused

it's on Hulu, but i'm not sure if it's free.

My family has a 2 bedroom on Daytona beach. They didn't pay much for it and we used to be in that thing 10 deep. Good times but I think they sold it a few years ago.

We haven't been on a family vacation in years.
But any of us can use em.
I know my parents get like free weekend stays at hotels and stuff.
They're always going somewhere.

Own one in Cancun. Did not have to pay much back then. Upkeep is minimal. Enjoy a Condo-style life when I go on Vacay rather than Hotel rooms.

I can rent it out if I am not using it.

Would not buy one now though. Way too expensive.

Why buy a timeshare when you can go on Airbnb and rent fabulous condos on the beach for a fraction of the price?

Yeah between airbnb and credit card churning, you can go anywhere in the world and have great accommodations for little to no money.

A timeshare is not worth it at all.

if that's the documentary I think it is...is that the woman who dogs were sh*tting all over the house?  I felt bad for the nanny.  She didn't get a break.  the lil kids sleeping in her bed n'sh*t.

IMO...a timeshare is not worth it in the 2014. Maybe in the 90's before innernets.  These days you got too many websites and too many ways to get a better deal on your vacay.  Back in the day...you had to go thru a travel agency and who knew if you were getting a good deal or nah?  Nothing to compare it to really.  These days you can do the research and competitive shop.

this.  I didn't do airbnb but it was the same concept.  I enjoyed that more than a hotel (and I love hotels)  and it was way cheaper.

There's a reason why people call Timeshares "financial herpes"  Here's a list of a bunch of timeshares on sale in Ebay for like 5 bucks!Shocked

Better to stick with VRBO or AirBnB

We stayed there last month, for 12 days.  The place is right on the beach, I mean literally you opened the sliding glass door from your bedroom or living room and unlocked the gate and you were on the beach.

We rented this place in November 2013.  This place starts at $50 a night.

We've rented this place for the fall 2014 in Europe.  It looks nice and if it is anything like my other Airbnb experiences, I am sure I will love it. For $82 a night, it doesn't look too shabby.

Unless I absolutely have to, I will never stay in a hotel again.  I love Airbnb

Me too. I been looking at places every free chance I get! They have some nice places for less than mediocre hotels.

His wife and kids were disposable to him too. It's sick.
