2. You’ve noticed that people get weirdly uncomfortable when describing someone as black and quickly say “African-American” instead.

6. But you’re always nervous about asserting yourself because it’s interpreted as being too “loud” or “aggressive” or “angry,” no matter what you say.

You smile and take it as a compliment but you’ve begun to take note of all the co-workers who have LITERALLY NEVER LOOKED AT YOUR FACE.

10. You may have also been told that you remind someone of their black childhood babysitter…

NBC / Via  http://madeupmonkeysh*t.tumblr.com/post/72135337762" rel="nofollow - madeupmonkeysh*t.tum blr.com

11. People feel compelled to slip into conversation that they know someone does [insert do-gooder activity here] involving “underprivileged” communities.

AMC / Via  http://libcity.tumblr.com/post/49183551901" rel="nofollow - libcity.tumblr.com
Or whenever a Sad Black Movie™ comes out, they are sure to let you know they saw it. As if you would want to discuss any of these traumas with them.

13. You hear offensive sh*t all the time and you feel alone when you realize no one else is going to say anything.

The betrayal. The heartbreak.

15. You’re always nervous about any karaoke invites because someone inevitably does a rap song that will have you holding your breath.

If only you could carry this girl in your pocket.

https://vine.co/v/hh1xTI6X7Ow" rel="nofollow - vine.co

16. Multiple people have gone up to you and felt compelled to note, “I really do think Lupita is the most beautiful woman in the world.”

You’re just trying to use the printer, not give a lecture on  http://www.buzzfeed.com/saeedjones/we-cant-eat-lupitas-black-beauty-try-as-we-might" rel="nofollow - the exotification of Lupita Nyong’o .

17. You find yourself explaining basic things like ~personal space~.

Tumblr user  http://howtobeterrell.tumblr.com/post/40242681970/look-at-how-disgusted-he-is-by-the-very-notion" rel="nofollow - HowToBeTerrell  succinctly notes: “Look at how disgusted he is by the very notion that she could touch his hair too without permission.”

18. Personal space, y’all.

NBC / Via  http://bongsandbooks.tumblr.com/post/20182692200" rel="nofollow - bongsandbooks.tumblr .com

19. In a moment of frustration, you use the n-word under your breath at your desk.

http://shipperwolf1.tumblr.com/post/74118778360/i-wish-a-Brotha-would" rel="nofollow - shipperwolf1.tumblr. com
One of your white co-workers hears you. It’s hella awkward.

20. You worry that you might snap one day.

But you’re reminded of the cautionary tale set out by The Chappelle Show’s Vernon Franklin,  http://www.cc.com/video-clips/t0brk3/chappelle-s-show-when-keeping-it-real-goes-wrong---vernon-franklin---uncensored" rel="nofollow - When Keeping It Real Goes Wrong .

21. You catch whispers of the suggestion that you were an “affirmative action hire” and somehow unqualified to be there.

FOX / Via  http://attitude.co.uk/naomi-campbells-iconic-moments/" rel="nofollow - attitude.co.uk
You refrain from asking them what it’s like to swim in their own mediocrity to save them from any more embarrassment.

22. There’s the awkward moment when white co-workers are at the  http://skimlinks.pgpartner.com/mrdr.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fskimlinks.pgpartner.com%2Fsearch.php%2Fform_keyword%3Dwater%2Bcooler" rel="nofollow - water cooler , laughing about something, then get suspiciously quiet when you walk up.

http://totallytransparent.tumblr.com/post/46252894585/michelle-obama-is--tired-of-your-sh*t-made" rel="nofollow">totallytransparent.t umblr.com

23. Or when a company outing takes place at a venue you’re HELLA uncomfortable with. A retreat on a plantation. Drinks at a country club.

24. Even though it’s a dumb stereotype, you do feel some type of way about eating things like fried chicken or watermelon in the office.

NBC / Via  http://chantdownbabylon.tumblr.com/post/23117607575" rel="nofollow - chantdownbabylon.tum blr.com
I mean, you eat them anyway because C’MON, but still.

25. There’s also the awkwardness that happens when maybe you do fit their stereotypes.

http://youngmoneygifs.tumblr.com/post/48192645047" rel="nofollow - youngmoneygifs.tumbl r.com
So what if I don’t know how to swim, I’m still stylin’ on you.

26. There’s the absurd moment when a co-worker who listens to rap more than you do declares themselves “blacker” than you.

http://iambeyinspired.tumblr.com/post/86077125634/beyonce-is-so-overrate-beyonce-cant" rel="nofollow - iambeyinspired.tumbl r.com

27. And the severe bugging of their eyes when you say you’re ambivalent about The Beatles/The Stones/Neutral Milk Hotel.

http://themobilemovement.tumblr.com/post/84538736037/let-me-spell-it-out-for-you" rel="nofollow - themobilemovement.tu mblr.com
Related: The severe bugging of their eyes when you have heard of/actually enjoy Neutral Milk Hotel.

28. The uncomfortable moment when there is some sort of music and dance situation with your co-workers and people look at you like you’re Rhythm McGee.

Next time someone says something like this to you, just  http://www.buzzfeed.com/lyapalater/aziz-ansari-doesnt-know-who-christian-dior-is" rel="nofollow - pull an Aziz Ansari .

29. The worst part of it all though is just being the only person, period. When all of these things happen, you have no one to Gchat/subtweet/side-eye with.

http://madeupmonkeysh*t.tumblr.com/post/63837251023/bitches-be-like" rel="nofollow - madeupmonkeysh*t.tum blr.com

30. When you’re “the only one of” anything SO MUCH ENERGY goes into analyzing and trying to understand what’s happening around you, even if everything is “fine.”

http://instagram.com/p/U9105cvw9h/" rel="nofollow - instagram.com
You have no one to confer with so you can’t tell if you’re being sensitive or imagining things or what. And that mental toll — the amount of energy it takes to analyze everything around you — takes away from your ability to actually do your work.

31. But when your job finally does hire another black person thooooo:

For what?
Black people are, unfortunately, enveloped into the white man's religion.
Plus it's not like it's some ancient tradition passed down from Africa.
And it's 7 damn days.....ain't nobody got the attention span for that.

24. Even though it’s a dumb stereotype, you do feel some type of way about eating things like fried chicken or watermelon in the office.

This guy ran into my office with such enthusiasm to tell me that someone was selling whole watermelons for $5 in the parking lot. I told him no thank you, I don't eat watermelon. He had the nerve to ask me why. I said because I DON'T LIKE IT & closed my door. Dead I don't like/eat any type of melon.

Worked in this racist place months ago and all of the aforementioned applied. The worst were the few blacks that worked there. Self loathing uncle toms galore.

LOL @ people getting quiet when you walk into the break room/watercooler area. So true, except they start switching to different languages (Russian) at my workplace. I just walk in, get my stuff and leave, no one cares what you're talking about.

1. Their discussions about outsourcing sound pretty much like how they'd sound discussing aspects of their slavery master plan back then

I'll chime in with parallelisms and they'll agree until they notice I'm talking about slavery and then say that's not what we meant

Slavery was far worse no comparison just saying their mindset is pretty much the same

The worst is when you don't try to be all buddy buddy and shuck and jive for their approval. The best was when the owner secretly sent his friend to tell me how 'grateful I should be to work there'. This women knew nothing about me and had to nerve to tell me I should be grateful to be a part of that failing trashy place. I walked out one day before the holiday party. The next morning I woke up with a smile so grateful I did not have to attend the party.

It was my first experience ever working in a racist setting and hopefully my last.

Very true. There was this one black girl there that the whites pretended to like bc she licked their butts. A very insecure, deceitful girl. She did everything to tarnish my reputation and they LOVED playing us against each other. It was so sad.

theres a man that happens to be gay and feels like I'm automatically his sister girl, sister in the struggle

My breaking it down on while there are similarities, it is not the same is another topic

Anyways so he is always trying out new found slang on me, sometimes in conference calls. If i know the slang and it's funny and fits the situation I'll abide it, if not I hit him with the "what do you mean by that", "where did you hear that from", "stop, that's innappropriate" (some reference to twerking)

if they like being the only one, it's because they don't want to have to face the racism, easier to delude themselves that it doesn't exist

Or feel they have to fight it, call it out, which can feel like an uphill battle

It makes me sad, mad even but I empathize

I'll admit I'm a sellout for #3

I wear the same kinky straight or kinky curly texture and length and even when I wear my natural hair out it's bunned or in an updo that looks quite similar to the kinky straight

Ugh! This brings back memories of my first office job right after high school. The pay was good but those white people were the worst. They brought their big funky stankin dogs to work everyday. I couldn't stand it.

One white boney crypt keeper lady there would always ask me how I got my braids in my hair and did I remove them every night. Why the hell do you care?Confused

The office whore who slept with the president of the company would stay trying me. And I would stay hurting her feelings. She tried to get me in front of the president and the hr manager to confront me. Talking about "I get the feeling that you don't like me" I was like "I don't". The look on her face was priceless.

They had the nerve to ask me to walk their dogs one time. I gave them the stankiest of stank eyes without saying one word. They never asked again.

I left that place after 6 months.LOLLOL

African/black americans? Black people from other cultures usually don't.

Kind of ot: My mother hit me with a Flotus side eye the only time I asked to when I was like 9. I went to my cousin's house and his neighbor was telling me about it. Never cared to ask about it again after that LOLLOLLOL But it's nothing I'd've remained interested in anyway.
