Ruby Dee, actress, civil rights champion, dead at 91
June 12, 2014, 12:45 PM EST

NEW YORK (AP) -- Ruby Dee, an acclaimed actor and civil rights activist whose versatile career spanned stage, radio television and film, has died at age 91, according to her daughter.

Nora Davis Day told The Associated Press on Thursday that her mother died at home at New Rochelle, New York, on Wednesday night.

Dee, who frequently acted alongside her husband of 56 years, Ossie Davis, was surrounded by family and friends, she added.

Her long career brought her an Oscar nomination at age 83 for best supporting actress for her role in the 2007 film "American Gangster." She also won an Emmy and was nominated for several others.

More to come...

She was the guest speaker for an organization for young black girls once when I worked there.  I had the chance to shake her hand and tell her how much I loved her work.  That was all I could manage to say because I was so in awe and shaking so hard.  She was beautiful.

If you want to see a really great movie with both Ruby and Ossie, try to rent (sometimes PBS shows it - that's how I saw it as a kid) "Gone Are the Days", sometimes called "Purlie Victorious".  It's the non-musical version of Purlie (another great show).

Rest in peace, Miss Dee.  Join Ossie and perform wonderful scenes again.
