Hair
Blue Ivy and Jay Z
Twitter screenshot
I’ve come to realize that nothing in the world is sacred or
off-limits. Not even a child who has no say-so in her own grooming but
relies on adults to tend to her tendrils. On Monday, photos popped up
online showing Jay Z, Beyoncé and their daughter, Blue Ivy, returning to
New York City after a recent trip to the Hamptons.
In the photos, Jay Z is holding Blue Ivy, and it looked as though
everyone was suffering from plane exhaustion. Or even vacation
exhaustion. Hell, when was the last time any of you had a chance to take
a private jet to the Hamptons? But never mind any of that. What was
most important to the people of Internet land was the fact that Blue
Ivy’s hair wasn’t “done” to their liking.
The life and times of Blue Ivy’s hair has been fodder, well, since
she’s had hair. People have criticized the Carters for not keeping Blue
Ivy’s hair “done” and for letting it look unkempt. But what business is
it of ours as to what Beyoncé and Jay Z choose to do with their
daughter’s hair?
Blue Ivy is 2 years old, and making a fashion statement is probably
the furthest thing from her parents’ minds when it comes to their
daughter’s hair. Who’s to say that they weren’t in the middle of
removing braids from their child’s hair before the flight ended? Who’s
also to say that maybe Blue Ivy was messing in her own hair? Also,
maybe, just maybe, Blue Ivy’s hair is just the way her parents want it
to be.
As a woman who’s had natural hair since the early ’90s, before the
millions of natural-hair products and YouTube tutorials were mainstream,
I had a hair regimen that was far from complicated. Wash and go. Apply
some moisturizer and keep it moving. There was even a time when I was
responsible for my cousin’s hair, when she was the same age as Blue Ivy,
and the most I could manage with a 2-year-old was some single-strand
twists. I’m not even going to mention the fact that those twists almost
turned into locks, several times. Imagine trying to keep a hyper child
in a seat for more than an hour? Not happening.
Honestly, I think some black people (the operative word is “some”)
have an issue that goes a lot deeper than Blue Ivy’s roots. It’s their
own roots they have an issue with. Especially if those roots aren’t as
silky as those of Kanye West’s daughter, North West.
Over the last day, I’ve read plenty of comments referring to Blue
Ivy’s hair as nappy. And it wasn’t in the connotation of “happy to be
nappy.” Nappy was being looked at as something negative. Not everyone
has 2abcdefgigh-textured hair, or whatever number system is used
nowadays to “grade” hair. And not everyone with kinky hair is eager to
add dollops of whatever natural-hair product is out there promising
curls and more manageable hair. Don’t act like you didn’t run out to buy
some Mixed Chicks hair products hoping for some Tracee Ellis Ross
curls.
There were also comments about how Beyoncé and Jay Z always leave the
house looking like a million bucks, but what about Blue Ivy? So would
people be happy if Beyoncé threw a weave or flatiron through Blue Ivy’s
hair? Or how about a million beads and braids? Then you’ll have the
natural-hair commanders complaining about how much damage that can cause
to her hairline.
Basically, if you’re Beyoncé and Jay Z, you’re damned if you do Blue Ivy’s hair, and you’re damned if you don’t.
Blue Ivy’s hair is perfectly fine. I doubt it’s dirty. I doubt it’s
infested with lice. I doubt it’s rarely uncombed, but at that particular
moment, you caught a family returning from a vacation, and the least of
their worries was hair. Maybe it’s not Blue Ivy’s hair that’s the issue
but something internal that a lot of black people have. In the words of
Marcus Garvey, “Take the kinks out of your mind instead of your hair.”
In layman’s terms, some of y’all black people are tripping. And guess
what? I doubt Beyoncé, Jay Z or Blue Ivy gives two rattail combs about
what any of y’all think.

Blue Ivy's hair looks like Bey forgot to pay the stylist and the stylist don't play about her money...
Black folk tell other black folk to do their child's hair. I don't see the problem... That doesn't change bc Bey is a celeb

I think she fail to place a swim cap on the baby hair . Beyonce needs to accept her baby father genes are strong . No indian or caucasian blood . Just a full blood black man . I will give a pass due to the vacation factor . I think saltwater is the devil for our people . I am sure the camera man used a long lens for a private moment . I love the baby eyebrows .
I think the baby is cute , even with her daddy strong genes . Beyonce pays for her lacefront stylist on call . Hire me to take care of the baby hair for 2 million a year . I will make that baby hair grow, unless she acts like my daughter . Tender head !!!

Exactly.
The other thing I don't understand is how Bey doesn't just WANT to do the baby's hair. Any mother's here who didn't love doing little styles on their baby girl? I mean at least the two ponytails thing?
It seem weird

I never really cared much for her hair before, but truth be told,
whenever I see a pic of Blu her hair always looks a hot mess. It's like they
don't care about doing it at all. It
doesn't take long to moisturize and comb a child's hair. :/

Blue's hair was done before. At the fake family lunch the had after elevator gate, her hair was fine they had it in a twist out. This looks terrible af and it's quite insulting to me as a natural that folks are trying to say "she's just wearing it natural blah blah" um no. Her hair is unkempt.
The worst part about it is that her mother has a new lacefront everyday but can't pick up a spray bottle and comb for her daughter. She needs to call Monica, I think all babies hair need to be left alone from all the styles that make them bald before they're even 4 but that doesn't mean don't moisturize and comb. Monica's daughter Laiyah's hair looks great, Blue looks homeless 99.9% of the time

I thought maybe her hair type didn't give many options and that's why they left her hair like that. Maybe Beyonce doesn't know how to do her daughter's hair? She probably doesn't want anyone touching the baby, that's why she won't get her a hair stylist.

People keep saying "so what she's rich, some people's hair looks like that". No it doesn't, clearly her hair is matted. A million celeb babies wear their hair out no style with all different hair types but the only one's hair that looks a damn mess is Blue's. But that's the point. Her hair does not need to be styled, it needs a comb & moisturizer. Why is that so hard to do? If the person that does Bey's hair can braid, cut, style, curl,. straighten, sew closures etc, wouldn't it be a simply task for them to rinse her head with water add leave in conditioner and run a comb through it? Too many excuses for these rich folks, a comb is 99 cents.

We expected Blue to be a little doll every time we saw photos of her...we wanted her to be a black version of Suri....
the uproar isn't solely about her hair....but underlying fact that she's not living up to the public fantasy of what we wanted her to be.

I agree. I remember the two year old phase. Neither of my girls looked put together despite getting the 5 star treatment almost every time we left the house. How they looked when we left home rarely matched how they looked when we arrived at church/grocery store/school/grammas house. Neither one of them were tender in the head but they sure hated headbands, ponytails, combs, brushes, etc. One of them hated shoes......SHOES! It used to bother me and then I had to accept that they didn't want to be bothered with appearances at that age. What for? They had sheeit to do/play/get in to and spent all their time ripping and running. Blue doesn't always look this way but so what if she did. It looks like she has bed head tbh...she woke up like that or something. Idk i just don't think it's that serious but carry on ya'll

It's just not making sense to me. I could understand if she was an Eryka Badu or Macy Gray type, but she won't even be seen in public without a blonde wig cascading down her back. So the wigs must make her feel like somebody. But her child's hair is not even worth combing? That's why it seems like neglect to me.

People keep saying "so what she's rich, some people's hair looks like that". No it doesn't, clearly her hair is matted. A million celeb babies wear their hair out no style with all different hair types but the only one's hair that looks a damn mess is Blue's. If they calling cps on the Smith's call them on the Carter's too |
You be killin me

It's just not making sense to me. I could understand if she was an Eryka Badu or Macy Gray type, but she won't even be seen in public without a blonde wig cascading down her back. So the wigs must make her feel like somebody. But her child's hair is not even worth combing? That's why it seems like neglect to me. |
It's like Lenny kravitz and Lisa bonet for example, I didn't expect their child to come out a cookie cutter girly girl wearing designer clothes type. Zoe kravitz is what I expected her to be, an "idgaf that I look like I haven't taken a bath in days I'm a free spirit and you will deal" type. She matches her parents exactly. Blue does not match her mother so it looks like neglect to me as well.

Exactly. If she is going to hold herself to a certain standard then she should hold her child to that same standard. She can't say that she isn't shallow or Eurocentric. The child should always be as fresh or better than the parents. Because what she's showing us right now is that she is a priority but her baby is not.

It ain't no damn excuse for a mom to have thousand dollar wigs, but her baby's head looks like a homeless Rasta on 79th street. I'm over it. Do ur damn baby's hair. At the very least comb it. Ain't nobody a natural Nazi, ur baby looks like she belongs to shaniquana and not a billion dollar couple named carter. Unacceptable. | Hey now, even Shaniquana has her little girl's hair in puffs, braids and barrettes.
