Koch Brothers Give $25 Million to United Negro College Fund

by http://www.breitbart.com/Columnists/Joel-B-Pollak" rel="nofollow - Joel B. Pollak 6 Jun 2014 http://www.breitbart.com/Breitbart-California/2014/06/06/Koch-Brothers-Give-25-Million-to-United-Negro-College-Fund#disqus_thread" rel="nofollow - 1602 http://www.breitbart.com/Breitbart-California/2014/06/06/Koch-Brothers-Give-25-Million-to-United-Negro-College-Fund#comments" rel="nofollow - post a comment

In a move that is sure to confound--and enrage--the left, the Koch brothers have donated $25 million to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), the foremost source of financial support to African-American students.

The UNCF http://www.kochind.com/files/060514UNCFAnnouncesNewKochScholarsProgram.pdf" rel="nofollow - launched the "Koch Scholars" program Friday, which "will provide nearly 3,000 merit- based awards to African American undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctorate students seeking scholarship assistance."

According to Koch Industries, Inc., the donation will also help fund 37 historically black colleges, which have struggled with financial shortfalls in recent years.

"We are enormously grateful to Koch Industries and the Charles Koch Foundation for their long-standing support of UNCF and for helping to create new opportunities for earned success and a better future for our students,” said UNCF president and CEO Dr. Michael Lomax.

The Koch brothers, Charles and David, are the Democrats' favored targets in campaigns against Republicans in general, particularly on themes of climate change and campaign finance. Led by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, for whom the Koch brothers are http://www.breitbart.com/InstaBlog/2014/05/07/Harry-Reid-Blames-Koch-Brothers-for-Climate-Change" rel="nofollow - a passionate obsession , Demcorats have made attacks on the Kochs the central feature of their midterm election campaign and their attempt to retain control of the U.S. Senate.

The Kochs, who support a variety of conservative, free market, and libertarian causes, are also known for their philanthropy in a variety of areas.

The $25 million donation to the UNCF is not a one-time gift aimed at easing public scrutiny, but is in fact the continuation of a long association between Koch-owned companies and the organization.

Regardless, Democrats may find that demonizing the Kochs will become a bit more difficult.

Welp, black students need scholarships, especially for graduate and post-doc work.

Until we as a community decide to get 25 million dollars together, there's no reason to turn down any checks.

And there are many many scholarships that are funded by "questionable" companies and people.

Sometimes setting yourself up financially means putting your principles to the side for a few years. There's nothing wrong with it.

I don't like them being on the scholarship selection committee (in 2 of the 5 slots).

I think they should keep taking the money.  It doesn't absolve the Koch brothers of anything though.

Just another PR move. Sonething they can hang their hats on later to lure in minority vote. Both dems and reps are full of sh!t blow hards.

Most black celebs have some sort of scholarship program they give money to.

The main issue I think is that we'd be better served by getting wealthy blacks together and making one specific effort. That was supposed to be the point of the United Negro College Fund.

We also need to focus on getting our kids through middle and high school but that's another issue.

I need to see all the other charities that took their money be put on blast as well. I know most black people are democrats, but most Democrats are not black. It's suspicious that people would choose this instance to be morally upright.

Not all money is good money. I think this is for their own self interest.

The Recipients of these Scholarships will be grateful.
Without it, they may not be able to afford the education worthy of their knowledge/ambition.

Who am I to judge

they give a lot more to their tea party, 1%er, "freedom", right wing agenda programs

My only concern is that they would use this money to influence initiatives to dismantle black america to further their agenda

Hopefully it is just a ploy to appear "balanced"

This doesn't surprise me. . . and I dont think it bothers me. But that is probably because I am already hip. I know a ploy when I see one. I know when its all about PR when I see it. I mean, yes, they donate to UNCF but then they also donate to politicians that vote to cut public assistance of all kind (food, housing, healthcare, etc), politicians that fight to minimize the "minority" voter turnout (and/or increase general disenfranchisement), politicians that generally don't have the general well-being of anyone but their donors and members of their immediate family, or politicians that want to cut pell grants or roll back the GI bill or cute veteran benefits.

I already know that whenever someone says they or their interests are racist this press release will be trotted out. I mean, they bought a wing in the Smithsonian natural history museum in DC, doesn't mean they actually believe in evolution OR that they want it to be taught in schools. They just like to see their names on things. LOL

The problem will be the uninformed, underinformed that will think "oh they did this thing one time for black people, I like them so I will vote for whoever they support ". lol.
