Actor Tracy Morgan in critical condition after six-vehicle accident in New Jersey

By Joe Sutton and Faith Karimi, CNN

(CNN) -- Actor Tracy Morgan is in critical condition after a six-vehicle accident in New Jersey early Saturday, authorities said.

The former "Saturday Night Live" cast member and "30 Rock" star was riding in a limo bus when the accident occurred in Mercer County, said Sgt. Gregory Williams of the New Jersey State Police.

The limo bus overturned at the New Jersey Turnpike in Robbinsville, he said.

"The limo bus is the only vehicle that overturned," Williams said. "Looks like one of the tractor-trailers may have rear-ended that limo bus, but that's preliminary at this time."

Williams said he does not believe alcohol played a role in the accident, but that is under investigation.

In addition to the bus, the wreck involved two tractor-trailers and an SUV, he said.

One person was killed and seven others hospitalized with injuries, authorities said. The fatality may have been another passenger in the limo bus, Williams said.

Peter Haigney, a spokesman for the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, said four patients are being treated there.

Three are in critical condition and one is in fair condition, he said.

The hospital said that a man named Tracy Morgan was among those in critical condition, but citing privacy laws, declined to confirm it is the actor. State police confirmed his identity to CNN.

Morgan performed Friday night at the Dover Downs Hotel and Casino in Dover, Delaware, the venue said.

It's so weird to me that young people even have sickle cell. I wonder if it's a reflection of black people not getting the type of medical care they need. I've always known I had the trait and therefore shouldn't reproduce with anyone who also has it...but I wonder if I knew that bc my parents were in the military.

Anyway that is sad. And I hope Tracy and all those people pull through.

@ maysay1.

I found out I had the trait also when I was in the Military.

They only found it because I had a Physical within 72 hours after a flight.

After 72 hrs the Cells 'normalize'.

The cells will 'Sickle' in high altitudes because of the Oxygen concentration.

Good Luck to Tracy

Hmmm.

Mine has always been noticed in routine blood tests. But it was my mom who first told me.

I just wonder...if black people are just not getting routine blood work (bc of lack of access to care)? or are the docs not telling them because they assume the patient already knows? or do people know and just disregard it and have babies anyway? I think there was a poster on here who said a few of her siblings had sickle cell which just seems...odd to me in this day and age since it's preventable.

I have the trait also and only one of my five kids has it. My mom has the trait and she found out that I had it also when I was a baby. I found out that one of my twins has it. The doctors just automatically tested my kids so I thought that it was routine to be tested shortly after birth.

Hmmm well maybe it's that our parent's generation (those of us who are 25-30) weren't as informed but now testing is much more common for us.

Hopefully that means it'll be pretty much eradicated in the next generation. I can't imagine that people who have the trait would knowingly reproduce with each other.

Hmmm. I wonder why almost every time I've given blood for the doc, they've mentioned it. I assumed it was because the cells actually have a different shape so it would be obvious with any blood draw (the trait...not necessarily the disease itself).

From a quick google it seems that screening for the disease is an automatic part of newborn screening and has been mandated in the US for the last 30 years. Which is great since that means hopefully fewer and fewer people will end up with the disease.

Anyway thanks y'all for indulging my tangent.

Oh yeah def. I'm just trying to understand the mechanism, aside from my own experience. It would make sense that people don't know if it's not automatically tested for.

Things that make you go hmmm.

I am so nervous for my son with the trait because I have been reading news stories about kids dying during sporting activities/excercising and they discovered that the deaths were actually related to the sickle cell trait that these kids carried.

The guy who crashed an 18 wheeler into Tracy Morgan's limo-bus turned himself in Saturday night after being charged with death by auto ... and he's already back out on the street.

35-year old Kevin Roper bonded out hours after being booked.

As we previously reported, Morgan was riding in a limo bus on the NJ Turnpike on his way home from a gig last night ... when it was rear-ended by an 18-wheeler and overturned.

One person died in the crash -- Jimmy Mack McNair, a comic who was a passenger in Tracy's limo.

Morgan is in critical condition but according to one unconfirmed report he's conscious.

A rep for Walmart says Kevin has been suspended pending the police investigation's outcome.

This would make an interesting thread to see yalls opinion on the topic.

I have a friend that has it, and her little brother died from complications of it. If I'm not mistaken, her older sibling has it as well.

The best way to keep from passing it on to your children if you're a carrier to to have your partner tested. It's tough, but the only was tbh. And yes, sickle cell is painful. @ BWOM probably cus he's in so much pain. I cared so fo many young blacks in crisis. Such a sad thing.

We need to ask more questions . Many doc's run HIV test on our people without your knowledge . I witness so many charts with test based on race in my op .  Most PT never ask any questions on a CBC . Ask to see the results on any test . I will ask a doctor in the ER if i know the test is run witout a PT knowledge  . Never sign anything until you read all the forms or ask the person with you if possible . I can't wait to retire . Money, money ,money seems to be the only thing hospitals care about today , unless you are lucky .

See people have been telling me my whole life that the trait doesn't affect anything healthwise. Turned out that was a lie.

Just found this page...might be helpful... www.wdconsctaawareness.org. It's a sickle cell trait awareness site.

Yeahhhh...this is one of those topics that I think I would need to stay out of. I have um...very strong opinions about that subject in general (knowingly passing on health issues...or having kids when you suffer from health issues).

But that would be interesting. In the case of sickle cell, I really don't think the testing was widespread enough for my parents generation to benefit. But even now, people lie about or hide or never talk about their STD status...so maybe this is the same.

Tracy Morgan Mom HospitalTracy Morgan's estranged mother was turned away at the hospital when she first went to visit her critically injured son ... this according to the mother herself.

Alicia Warden -- who has had a well-publicized, strained relationship with Morgan -- tells TMZ no one called her about her son ... she heard about it on TV.

She says she went to visit Tracy in the hospital on Saturday, but was turned away by hospital security and Tracy's fiancee, Megan Wollover.  Warden believes Tracy's fiancee has a thing against her.

Warden says she returned the next day and she was let in ... but Tracy was unconscious and she was only allowed to stay for 5 minutes -- never alone with him.  She says his friends and a pastor were in the room.

Warden says, "All I wanted was for our family to be alone with him. I wanted to pray over him and couldn’t do that because so many people were in the room."

Morgan said in a 2012 interview, he hadn't seen her in 11 years.

Normally I'd say the fiancee needs to stay out of it.

But Tracy has made it clear that he wants NO contact with his mother. None. Even when he was having other health issues a few years back. This has been an ongoing issue.

So in this case the fiancee and his friends/other family did the right thing. It's sad, but sometimes that's just how it is.

UPDATE .

CNN) -- Comedian Tracy Morgan is a man of many laughs, but his lawyer said this morning that despite Internet rumors, Morgan is "still struggling" and "fighting hard" two months after a car crash that left him in critical condition.

The "30 Rock" and former "Saturday Night Live" star was seriously injured in June after a Wal-Mart truck slammed into the limo occupied by Morgan and four others on the New Jersey Turnpike. The collision killed Morgan's long-time friend comedian James McNair and injured the other passengers. Morgan was hospitalized with broken ribs, a broken nose, a broken femur and a broken leg.

Morgan's attorney, Benedict Morelli, told NBC's "Today" show: "The interesting thing is that at the beginning the Internet was saying that he (Tracy Morgan) was dead. ... Then they said that they amputated his leg. Now it's out that he's doing great. None of those things are true or accurate."

Morelli added that if the case went to trial, he intended to show that it is the culture of Wal-Mart to have their drivers work over 14 hour shifts -- the legal limit for drivers.

Kevin Roper, the driver responsible for the crash, pleaded not guilty in June to criminal charges that include vehicular homicide and assault by auto.

In a statement, Wal-Mart said the crash had been a "terrible tragedy." They also told "Today" that they were "cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation." When Matt Lauer asked Morgan's attorney if there was a chance this could be settled before going to a court of law, Morelli responded "that's up to them."

Morelli also stated that he intends to make sure Wal-Mart takes "full responsibility."

The comic’s younger sister,  http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Asia+Morgan" rel="nofollow - Asia Morgan , 41, confirms their mom’s financial woes and calls her famous brother a “d-- bag.”

She says she’s done keeping quiet about Tracy, 43. “Because of the way he’s treating our mother, all bets are off,” says Asia.

“He’s never been a nice person,” says Asia, who lives about an hour and a half away from her mother. “And money’s just made it worse.”

Warden, 61, says her mortgage company has notified her that if she doesn't make a minimum payment by Feb. 23, it will begin foreclosure proceedings on her home. She adds that her utilities are about to be turned off and she’s about to lose her car as well.

“My mom’s house isn’t extravagant, but it’s her home, Her health is failing. She has diabetes, and her legs are giving out on her,” says Asia. “This would be a drop in the bucket for Tracy. She has a son that can do, and she’s done everything that she could possibly could for her family.”

Warden says she worked until February 2011, when she lost her job. Not long after that, she adds, she first approached Tracy about helping her.

She claims he initially agreed to pay off her house, but changed his mind after accusing her of giving an interview to the media. (She denies doing this.)

Her unemployment benefits have run out, and Warden says she asked her son for help earlier this month.

After explaining what she owed, she says a woman working for him called back and told her, “Tracy’s offering you a one-shot deal” of $2,000.

“I told her, ‘Thank you, but no thank you. I’m not some person in the street,” Warden says, adding “That was the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

“God don’t like ugly,” Warden says. “Karma comes back to you.”

Asia also reiterates what her mother told us last week about Morgan’s book, “I Am the New Black.”

“It’s 99 percent bulls—,” she says.

“My mother did everything she could,” Asia adds. “She ran numbers, but she did it to put food on the table. We were raised in the [Tompkins] projects [in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn}, but we didn’t think we were poor.”

We wonder if this situation is part of the 99. Morgan writes that regardless of the estrangement from his family, “I love my mother and always will. She did the best she could.”

A spokesman for Morgan did not respond by our deadline.

Quote

Morgan was equally coy about the family feud in the introduction to his 2009 memoir, http://www.randomhouse.com/rhpg/features/tracymorgan/excerpt.php" rel="nofollow - I Am the New Black .

"As of this moment, I'm estranged from my own mother and most of my family, and I'm not sure that's going to change much. I'm not saying why, I'm just saying that's how it is," he wrote. "It's okay though. I've gotten used to it. I'm an island, kind of like Antigua: hot and humid, definitely a destination of choice if you want to get freaky or just kick back. And pretty isolated."

I see. Does "new black" have the same connotation for him?
I was just reading an article stating he was having a hard time with his recovery and now that I hear how he's willing to treat his mama dirty like that, I'm not sure I care.

Every now and again my daddy tells me about the abuse suffered at the hands of the elders in his community.  How they would get beaten relentlessly and then the mamas would talk about it laughing.  He said 'em when they get old.  My pops is a great man with a big heart and he's living out his days surrounded by family.  But he says when his great aunt would drive up and just look at the house, they would go and shut the blinds.

I say this to say you can never judge a situation by one side of a story.

If you made it DESPITE your parents, I can easily see how you might not give two sh*ts about them.

Or could it be that he's just a selfish asshole? Even if the woman was not the best mother, you're really willing to let your old and sick mama be homeless over a few thousand dollars when you're a multimillionaire 18 times over? She'd better be the devil to justify that level of coldness.

Depending on the relationships. Hes talked about issues he has with his mom before when he was a youth. So I cant judge. Using the media to shame him into giving the money or to use his name for donations is no better.

I feel like shes been having this same money issue for the same amount for yrs.

sometimes those childhood scars burn deep

i think its funny that he's mad because he thinks the mother was giving media interviews and to prove that he wasnt the sister goes out and does a media interview.

why do people expect so much from someone who was never a nice person?
