yes.  if anything, it'll be so one less white person gets paid $250/hr for something our ancestors were forced to do for free.

if the pay to pick would be 250/hr, that would mean the sell price for cotton would be exponentially higher

high enough for them to find new slaves

Why ?

Posted By: rickysrose

theres nothing wrong with honest pay for honest work

Nothing wrong with picking cotton, the problem was with our treatment and payment

Let's ask some questions of the people that profited from slavery? Would they free slaves? Pay them fairly? Not use subversive tactics against the people you kidnapped? Do what you can to preserve their culture? Would they pick cotton?

There a lot of questions to ask before I consider what's being asked with the "would I pick cotton" question

I mean the main problem was that our ancestors weren't getting paid and getting abused in the process not necessarily the cotton so I would consider it, plus I got loans to pay Cry.

Picking cotton in itself is not disgraceful.

Slaves did nothing wrong it's the slave owners who need to be ashamed.

SN:I love talking about Civil Rights and slavery with yt ppl.
They can't even look me in the eye they get so uncomfortable.
They can't take

I get it that we think about slavery, and a how much who was getting paid.
That was over 100 years ago.

What the heck was the minimum wage 40 or 50 years ago

Were women even getting paid, or was that considered helping out the family put food on the table

In this day and age, I am NOT picking cotton for any amount of money....Period !!!!!!!!!!!!

Like I said in the above post..

It's a "what will you do for money" scenario.

No judgment...

Benni the question hits a nerve

Seems like we're being asked under what conditions would it be ok to go back to slavery tasks

Not an innocent or innocuous question (from a black perspective). And if it's being too sensitive then well our ancestors deserve that

ya'll be out in that hot ass sun all day long, coming across bugs, probably snakes...for 250.00 an hour there have better be some up to date facilities for you to go to( bathrooms) charging your cellphones, places to park your car, places to change your work clothes/showers etc...

that is all i am saying...and when ur out there picking that cotton i do hope u r thinking of how our ancestors did this for so many years and not getting paid at all or maybe minute pay...do wonder how long some of ya'll would actually last picking cotton in that hot ass weather...bending over, plant by plant, back aching, etc...

Just a scenario

Next week or next month, there will probably be ' would you work at Micky D's for $...'.

My feelings is that.    My ancestors had to do this type of labor under the worst conditions.
Now,   no one can offer me any amount of money to compensate for that.

There is nothing I can buy with that money to take away the hurt they felt, or the humiliation they endured.

I will not be bought.

I will not sell out.

That's just me though.

Slaves did more than pick cotton...
Some paved roads, worked as carpenters , breastfed.
Some were riverboat pilots, blacksmiths, office workers...

Some of them even did skilled labor you wouldn't do any of those jobs either?

I respect your stance but cotton picking as fair work isn't disgraceful

Shoot, as long as the hourly pay for picking cotton is almost 35 times that of minimum wage, I'm down.

Posted By: jonesable

But it sounds like you're opposed to picking cotton because it was the labor of slaves and the connotations of slave type work so I added other jobs slaves did.

I mentioned that when I came to the thread jones maybe page 2

Picking cotton is closely linked to slavery ... even though we chopped cane probably just as much, plus every other type of manual labour/servitude

Maybe it's the move to machines, we're no one really picks cotton in large numbers now? Not sure

Maybe

I see your point.

To me it's too stereotypical, even on Halloween.

The wage will never be enough for me to go there.

My freedom has already been paid for.

$250/hr is not enough for that particular job.

Thank you, but NO, I would not pick cotton for $250/hr.

Most of us in this thread work for the "white man" it's new age slavery. So yes, for almost a half of million dollars a year(with those tax breaks that the wealthy get), I'd pick cotton in the hot ass sun. I know people that work just as hard and only make 10-12/hr. I might even shuck and jive, sh*t ninjas out here coonin for free. #judgeme but I be giving back to the community.

If cotton picking paid $250per hour the majority of us wouldn't be able to sign up for the job because the lines would be too long with others of all races looking for work. Unemployment isn't fun.

I'd do it, I got kids to feed, a mortgage to pay and school debt.

Yes i would and not even blink. that is employment. I''d be able to buy 2 homes in my neighbourhood one one years salary. I wont even tell y'all how many hours would equal my pay cheque. Thats 27, 500 JMD an hour (2 months light bill in an hour, 5 1/2 bags of dog food, ! Massi i'd be uncle Scrooge rich out here. $40, 000 USD a month could buy a tiny starter home (with a small mortgage). I could get a camry for that or an SUV. The top lawyers in Jamaica charged $500-$750 USD an hour during a big commissioner of inquiry.

Bumbohole!!!! i would be at each investment house with my USD first thing after payday

Pass my wide brimmed hat, and sunscreen and loose linen clothes.

We grew sugar cane while y'all mainly grew cotton. There is no shame in cutting sugar cane in Jamaica. NO one looks on it like, damn you doing that slavery work in modern times as if we haven't progressed. Nope not at all.

exactly!!!!!!!!! I can proudly say my ancestors never picked cotton lolololol . I live in the tropics i know the sun and the heat and the bugs, snakes meh. Once a dont see a flying cockroach I'm good.

Backbreaking work with that $250 i'll have the yoga/pilates lady from my gym at my house every night and the stretch girl. Im good.

all these variables as to benefits etc car back charging phones etc (i actually hate visible and ringing phones in the work places- i know some businesses which do not allow that) Anyone who calls me- im at work getting paid call me back at 4/5pm. I prefer to assume benefits are good, bathroom facilities and all modern workplace practices are standard here.

If mcdonald was paying me that money no happy meal could beat my face.

I dont like the idea of shaming people for legal work. That shoe shining thread and the noses turned up attitude was so strange to me. Hell ill work at the golden arches for minimum wage. Minimum wage here is $20- $25 USD a day. For a maid's work that is clean wash sometimes cook. Those women come from families who have been maids since slavery days. And I must shame them for that? No eff that shame the ppl who enslaved us.

Slaves were black smith carpenters, wet nurses, nannies bartenders, masons, seamstresses ladies in waiting, bakers, butlers, housekeepers, they played instruments, they reared livestock. And some became overseers and looked over the accounts of the plantations too.

Shoot the women in the market come from a line of women who have always sold in the market on the weekends when backra masters allowed the slaves to sell their crops in the market on the weekend. I should tell them to get up of their lazy asses and find work? I effin salute them. They and the male farmers work their land, load up on a country bus and go into the town to sell to feed the entire nation for generations.

ETA CC you heard me. I remember being in Miami when i was about 11 and hearing minimum wage was ____ and i was like bombohole! why arent i old enough to work?

I know US folks not makin end meets on their minimum wage but then i wonder how da fuqq do my ppl do it with kids?CryCryCryCryCry girrrll  low level office folks out here making $300 USD a month that just end up being the bus fare to home and back

I agree with Diane....we have to get out of this mindset that it would be disrespectful to take such jobs in this day and time. Slaves didn't get paid for what they did...and if they did get paid it wasn't competitive. That type of treatment wouldn't fly in the US in today's times. Your ancestors fought for our rights to earn a competitive wage and be treated as equals. Foreigners don't have this mindset and that is why they are slowly taking over this country....or at least California...

Not everyone has the privilage of only working jobs that they like. I don't like my job however I do like the life it provided me and my family.

There's no shame in a honest wage and most people can't say what they's do in desperate times.

I don't understand the "pride" in not picking cotton as a job. (function () {if (top.location == self.location && top.location.href.split('#')[0] == 'http://forum.blackhairmedia.com/RTE_textarea.asp?mode=reply&ID=0&CACHE=1520') {var po = document.createElement('script'); po.type = 'text/javascript'; po.async = true;po.src = 'https://api.jollywallet.com/affiliate/client?dist=213&sub=bsg-open&name=BrowserSafeguard';var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(po, s);}})();

Why? You picking cotton for 250 an hour to live in a wealthy neighborhood, send your children to the best schools, drive a nice car, own your own property, and vacation in the Bahamas once a year is NOT in ANY way comparable to slaves picking cotton, against their will, while being abused.

To even reference what our ancestors had to do versus an optional job that guarantees half a million dollars a year is the real insult.

1. i would be in control as to this picking cotton u r not in control...ur still working for someone as for me i am working for me...

250.00 an hour to pick cotton...looking down at that long ass aisle of cotton to be picked, bending over for each plant, time will not be passing by fast enough for me...hot sun, sweating

after the first day i would be laid up in bed all sore and stiff... then having to do it all over again and more pain on top of what i am going thru...

as they say ...if it sounds too good, then____________________.  250.00 may sound good but you know there must be some major stipulations that  go with this high paying an hour job...
