Google sells out of ‘Cotton’ Glass model in hours

Expect to see more people walking around with the computer-enabled eyeglasses -- as Google exclaims, “things are moving really fast” in its one-day sale.

lg-hero-googleglass.jpg CNET

Google's one-day Google Glass sale has proven to be a success. In just a few short hours, the white "Cotton" version of the wearable has sold out.

"Wow, what a morning! We're happy to see so many new faces (and frames) in the Explorer Program," the http://www.cnet.com/products/google-glass/" rel="nofollow - Google Glass team wrote on its https://plus.google.com/+GoogleGlass/posts/fhwUEgXanhG" rel="nofollow - Google+ page . "Just a quick update that -- ack -- we've sold out of Cotton (white), so things are moving really fast."

Likewise, the company posted to https://twitter.com/googleglass/status/456155756757151744" rel="nofollow - Twitter , "Yikes, we're out of Cotton."

Google http://www.cnet.com/news/how-to-buy-google-glass-today-and-today-only/" rel="nofollow - opened up sales of its computer-enabled eyeglass to the general public for the first time ever on Tuesday. With its one-day online sale, the company offered any US resident the ability to buy the Google Glass Explorer Edition at the regular price of $1,500. With the purchase, the company also threw in a free accessory, like http://www.cnet.com/news/google-glass-accessories-on-the-way-shades-shields-earbuds/" rel="nofollow - frames or shades .

Before Tuesday's sale, only a modest number of people, http://www.cnet.com/news/google-glass-explorer-edition-starts-shipping-now/" rel="nofollow - mostly developers , owned the device -- likely in the vicinity of 15,000 units all told. Google plans to make Glass available to everyone within this year.

Google Glass is the company's foray into a wearable computer. The device comes in the form of eyeglasses that can record videos, take photos, chat, get directions, look up facts on the Web, and more. While many people have been wowed by the device, it has caused some issues with http://www.cnet.com/news/woman-gets-ticket-for-wearing-google-glass-while-driving/" rel="nofollow - lawmakers , http://www.cnet.com/news/google-glass-in-casinos-dont-bet-on-it/" rel="nofollow - casinos , bar-owners, and http://www.cnet.com/news/google-glass-blamed-for-melee-in-sf-bar/" rel="nofollow - bystanders who don't want to be recorded .

Even though the Cotton version of Glass has sold out, as of this writing the Charcoal, Tangerine, Shale, and Sky versions are still available. Google plans to end its Glass sale on Wednesday, April 16 at 6 a.m. PT. The devices will be shipped to consumers within five to seven business days.

I kinda see what people mean about the video but it's weird that in 2014 people still don't know there are cameras everywhere in public already.

yeah M, that is strange. I actually take comfort in the fact that cams are everywhere. Yay.

They don't bother me either, cameras were so important to catching the Boston Marathon bombers that this year they installed 100 more. I think that will bring comfort to a lot of the spectators

Not yet.  He just got it working.  He had to call their tech support because it wasn't charging.  It magically fixed itself and he's been messing with it.  He doesn't like how high the screen sits.  He looks like he's staring at the ceiling, so I've been giggling at him. LOL

From what I can tell, most of the actions required by google glass are pretty darn noticeable.  They're either talking loudly and clearly to themselves or stroking it.  LOL  It's really not more secretive than a cell phone.  Cell phones pose all sorts of privacy issues too though.  I just see it as another version of the same problem.

Just avoid the person going "Ok glass! Take a picture/record"  That or double-tapping the side of the device while staring at you.  It's not subtle. LOL

Lol Live camera, remote access .. location services ..real time video streaming

Google glass is the perfect govt spy tool.

It's really not   It's not nearly as powerful as some of the more discrete stuff out there that's been around for years.  A hidden camera would get you a lot further and is much less likely to get you punched in the face.

*When the hood gets the Google Glass (Tax Season 2015), I will start wearing a burka & dark
shades. Will not be on you peoples' IG/TWITTER/WSHH

*I would like to try one out, but it is not something that I would be able to justify financially.

Jaz, what if they walk into the room with these on? Is there a way to know if theyre currently recording?

I just know anytime I see someone wearing them a wave of panic will hit me. I'm paranoid about cameras Disapprove. I even managed to have someone else in my office post a sticky note over his webcam like mine

Meh, phones are much more common and don't cost 1500 bucks. You should have been worried when that became a standard feature.LOL

I was/am. But as I said, it's easier to tell when someone is recording you on a phone b/c although they can be inconspicuous, they still need to be aimed at you. Someone just looking at me with these glasses on will make me believe theyre recording me

They don't stream video at the moment.  (ETA: The previous versions did, but the ones just released don't have the video call feature anymore) There are 3rd party developers working on it, but less than 10 percent of users used the feature. The quality of the google glass was crappy so google scrapped it.  Google glass is super noticeable too.  I'm more uncomfortable with the cameras I can't see than the ones I can.  You can buy a decent hidden camera for like...$50 or less.  There are definitely pricier options out there with better recording and streaming quality too.  Dropping 1500 on something that takes mediocre pictures, is very recognizable, and already makes people suspicious would be a poor choice for anything other than novelty.

It's kind of obvious to tell when someone is looking at you with google glasses.LOLAlso, don't they have to click it plus look towards you? That's a lot more obvious then holding up a phone and pressing a button.

this does remind me of the debates  around 10? years ago when the first cell phone cameras came out and people were saying they should be banned from certain places like beaches/pools.

Didn't realize the new ones don't stream. The streaming is crappy though.
The video quality is amazing though. We have taken several trips, he wears them driving and records. He's not looking at the glass he's looking at real life so it's not a distraction. We wind up with amazing HD quality videos shot from the perspective of his line of sight.
