Spike Lee and his criticism of the gentrification of New York, more specifically Brooklyn, was one of the most-buzzed about topics in the news yesterday. After his appearance as a guest lecturer at the Pratt Institute this week where he railed against how much the city has changed, Brooklyn residents have lashed out at the famed film director.

RELATED:  http://newsone.com/2919376/spike-lee-gentrification-rant/" rel="nofollow - Spike Lee Unleashes Fiery Rant On Gentrification In New York

Lee’s passion against how much his beloved borough of Brooklyn has become a haven for so-called “hipsters” and young professional Whites was on display during a minutes-long rant at Pratt. http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/spike-lee-views-gentrification-irk-brooklyn-residents-article-1.1703404" rel="nofollow - The New York Daily News captured reactions from some of Brooklyn’s transplants who took umbrage at Lee’s comments.

From the News:

“I don’t see a negative to cleaning up a neighborhood,” said Marina Rutherfurd, 25, who was walking her English springer spaniel Hudson in Fort Greene Park on Wednesday, not far from where Lee shot scenes for “Crooklyn,” his 1994 semibiographical film about life growing up in Brooklyn during the 1970s.

“I think it’s a creative bunch of people doing interesting things,” added Rutherfurd, who moved to Fort Greene just a month ago from the Hamptons, where she recently opened a restaurant called Station. “It’s all good intentions.”

At one point, Lee passionately blasted dog walkers at Fort Greene Park, calling it the “motherf*ckin’ Westminster Dog Show” during his discussion on Tuesday. Other reactions from Brooklyn residents were similar, with one woman saying Lee was just trying to “provoke” people and adding that’s what he’s always done. Another person who moved to the borough from Toronto added that she sees “benefit” in Brooklyn’s gentrification and lauded the fact she can now buy a “decent cup of coffee.”

Daily News columnist Errol Louis suggested that Lee actually helped to lure people to his native Brooklyn because of his marketing of the borough by way of his dress and New York pride that is almost always on display. Louis noted that Lee’s rant was humorous at points but also said that it was “downright offensive” as well. On social media, Louis’ http://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/gentrification-spike-lee-article-1.1703113" rel="nofollow - column was praised with many comments adding that Lee was “racist,” among other things not fit to print.

NPR blogger and Postbourgie founder/editor Gene “G.D.” Demby http://www.postbourgie.com/2014/02/26/spike-rages-against-gentrifiers-that-he-may-have-helped-lure/" rel="nofollow - shared in Louis’ suggestion that Lee helped make the area attractive to transplants and outsiders, with both writers noting the many entertainers who called the borough home at one time. Stars such as Erykah Badu, Guru and DJ Premier of Gang Starr fame, Saul Williams, Jay Electronica and a host of other transplants have lived in Brooklyn over the years, no doubt attracted to the creative energy Lee wants to see preserved.

Lee hasn’t said much since delivering the rant, but a quick scan of his Twitter account showed that he http://instagram.com/p/k5UE-JSqkU/" rel="nofollow - posted an Instagram photo of an old Tarzan movie with the caption “Early Gentrification.”

The comments on another site were that he should be saying thank you...white people really don't get it.  This is why there's no God in the christian sense.  Too, too many generations of black ppl having to put up with the bullsh*t for someone to be looking out.  They always win.  Ima need to see some Earthly pay back.

I didn't read the whole thing but I ain't mad.  It's hurtful to see that what it takes to "clean up"  a community is gentrification.  I was just having this conversation.  All these big beautiful 2 and 3 story Manors in my neighborhood are being bought up by the University and white folks.  U ain't got enough people with the mindset to try and purchase and keep this neighborhood at least mostly black.

Well its Sucks cause the Heart of NYC has been being eatin up! JUST look at Harlem! Harlem soul is gone almost a Ghost~ But on the other hand I feel like Blacks need to Start moving out of these urban cities and find other cities to build we need our own China City

Nature...I was thinking the same thing myself but why should we let ourselves be run out?   We could go somewhere else only to have "them" come along and take that too when they decide it's beneficial yet again to move wherever we're at.

The reason things like this go on is because we are not a strong enough community to fight back.  The Jews left the jewish ghettos because they did better and came up.  They were not pushed out like black folks are. Even now even "white" folks know not to even think they going into a Jewish neighborhood and taking that sh*t over.

All I will say is I hate going into brooklyn now, so many memories gone and replaced with coffe and wine shops. It makes me sad to see my aunties face when we walk the hood.

And now whites are starting to take over the west indian parade

Exactly, pushing Jews out is not even a thought in white people's mind even if they have them by the balls. They learned through hundred of years on how to grab folks by the balls so they can't fight against them. Smh, but we are been integrated for what now 50 years. Yeah, we aren't going to wake up until we have our own inquisition.

I will say this though...in a society that ultimately sees GREEN **chaaching**...something that people who are displaced from these areas aren't stereotyped to have...why wasn't this an expected phenomena?  Why do we even expect THE MAN to look out for the interests of the little brown people anyway?!  Nobody is going to get a little brown people reservation section of NYC.

Don't blame him. I'd be tired of people repeatedly making calculated moves to keep others a minority and economically barring them from communities they created-- all while appropriating and profiting from the ideas and culture of those exact same people.

And FULLY agree with BB's quote, mangachan & newfiva--- the passion that blacks express about self preservation being dismissed as rants, tantrums, misplaced anger, what the fück ever by hit dogs hollering… is tiresome.

Yes. They have been doing this to him for so long. Just dismissed whatever he says under the guise that he's a angry black man.

Just saw on my local news that Spike Lee's "rant" may have "triggered an act of vandalism".

Some white folks mad because their Brownstone got spray painted with "Do the Right Thing" lmaooo

Investigators believe that the intended target for the vandalism was Spike Lee's family's house, which was right next door to them white folks lol

The problem with Spike Lee is that he actually cares about Black people and is unapologetic about it

This makes both Blacks and Whites uncomfortable

I get why Spike is angry … We just had some stuff go down over here
because Trader Joes wanted in. Blacks wasn't having it.

I wish he could've explain his point a little more clearer though.

Why would it make blacks uncomfortable though? I never understood the reticence towards Spike on Bhm.

I saw that in the news and wondered if those 'folks' would now try to sue Spike. I read that Spike's brother lives in the house next door(??) and said Spike needs to stop mentioning the house address in his interviews. Sort of making it sound like Spike is the reason that happened. I bet 'folks' will use that in court if they sue him.

Nope - wrong.

The city 'gentrifies' a place with money. It's from investors and [eople are not going to invest in an area that's jusy gonna get run down again because the folks that live there don't give a ddarn.

It's not for free... if the Black folks in the hood could afford to fix up the areas ... there would be no problems.

Spike Lee just wants the ghetto to stay the ghetto so that black folks can stay in the ghetto and not amount anything.

Why doesn't he use HIS millions to bring money into the hood so that it can be a nice place for black folks to live.

Somebody's gotta pay.

What did he think was going to happen, they were bound to add lofts, coffee houses and artsy places after the basketball team moved there. Its like that all over the US, the Detroit Pistons arena is not even in Detroit, and in Charlotte the only time I see a bunch of police officers downtown is when its a basketball game or when Katy Perry is doing a concert.

They even shoo away the homeless when its yt events by the transit center, any other time its cool for them to panhandle and hangout down there.

Anthony Mackie Accuses Spike Lee Of “Reverse Gentrification” After Moving On Up To The Upper East Side!

http://bossip.com/?s=spike+lee&x=0&y=0" rel="nofollow - Spike Lee doesn’t even live in Brooklyn anymore !

Anthony Mackie Accuses Spike Lee Of Reverse Gentrification

Via http://newsone.com/2933305/anthony-mackie-accuses-spike-lee-of-reverse-gentrification-video/" rel="nofollow - NewsOne reports:

Actor Anthony Mackie questioned the sincerity of renowned filmmaker Spike Lee‘s concern over gentrification in Brooklyn, pointing out that the Red Hook director no longer even lives in the borough.

In a sit-down interview with The Grio’s Chris Witherspoon, Mackie said that Lee’s escape to Manhattan’s Upper East Side is a form of “reverse gentrification” and ”as your tax brackets changes, I guess your zip code changes.”

Mackie then goes on to suggest that he’s more Brooklyn than Lee:

“I live in Brooklyn. My address is in Brooklyn. I have two restaurants in Brooklyn. I don’t have a problem with gentrification. The people [who] want to live in Brooklyn, move to Brooklyn.”

Mackie starred in two Spike Lee joints early in his career, She Hate Me (2004), and Sucker Free City.

Spike Lee, a long-time, outspoken critic of the whitewashing of his beloved Brooklyn, went on an epic, expletive-laden rant.

Here’s the thing: I grew up here in Fort Greene. I grew up here in New York. It’s changed. And why does it take an influx of white New Yorkers in the South Bronx, in Harlem, in Bed Stuy, in Crown Heights for the facilities to get better? The garbage wasn’t picked up every motherf*ckin’ day when I was living in 165 Washington Park. P.S. 20 was not good. P.S. 11. Rothschild 294. The police weren’t around. When you see white mothers pushing their babies in strollers, three o’clock in the morning on 125th Street, that must tell you something.

For Spike Lee to be guilty of reverse Gentrification would require him to somehow force the white people in Manhattan to move out, police allow drugs and crime to take over, drop the property value, then black people purchase said properties, move in, police drives the crime out, and the property value would go back up. That would be REVERSE Gentrification.

Do you think Mackie has a point?
