Subject: Massive China City in New York State?

I was talking to friend about her daughter. She stated that her child's teacher is encouraging the child to learn Chinese. She is all for the child learning a different language, especially given that they live in Houston, she just wondered why the push.

She reminded me how the Chinese took over part of Bellaire (Southwest Houston) in the 80's. Signs in Chinese, Chinese banks, you name it. Still don't know why yt folk let that happen.

Then I remembered and article from last year and had to think on it a minute. Not good. That big mouth Donald Trump really hates the Chinese and with good reason. He KNOWS they're not our friends.

Take a look:

The Chinese have made trillions of dollars flooding our shores with super cheap products, and now they are using some of that money to buy land and property all over America. For example, there is now a proposal to construct a multibillion dollar “China City” that would span approximately 600 acres in a remote area of New York State.

This “China City” (that is actually what it would be called) would be located on Yankee Lake in Sullivan County, New York. The plans anticipate large numbers of Chinese businesses, plenty of homes for Chinese immigrants, a Chinese high school, a college, a casino and even a theme park. And the first 600 acres is only for “phase one” of the plan. Ultimately, the goal is for “China City” to cover more than 2,000 acres. Those promoting this plan say that it will be a great way for New Yorkers to learn to appreciate Chinese culture.

So should we be concerned that the Chinese want to place a little slice of communist China right in the heart of New York State?

Those of you who live in Houston, what say you to this? I hope you don't patronize their businesses. Bad enough the Chinese and Koreans are running the hair game. Pitiful.

True. Mandarin Chinese is usually simplified as just Chinese.
And yes...my greatest wish is to see this kind of cohesiveness and economic power for us.

I am in Houston. There are lots of small shops around that area. The banks etc are Asian and not so much the mainstream American ones. I want to learn Korean, Japanese and Chinese. I have been told that Korean would be good to start with as I have had some Spanish.

It's too late for me to learn Mandarin. My mandarin will never be as good as their English so I won't waste my time. Black people definitely need to push foreign languages on our children early on. Spanish/Portuguese + English and u got all the Americas covered, a few countries in Africa and Europe. Our most gifted language learners should tackle Mandarin, Japanese, Arabic.

I wish black ppl would wake up and take back detroit and new orleans.

Its so obvious they are letting them crumble to kick us out and rebuild.

I got info that alot of those asian tour buses aren't really sightseeing tours they are touring to see which neighborhoods/buildings to buy up.

More Vietnamese students are enrolled in Xavier University's pharmacy program than blacks. Xavier is an HBCU.

See that is what I thought too. A friend that is Japanese said it was due to the Korean alphabet being a bit easier to learn. I have downloaded apps for my Kindle to start.

While their cohesiveness is astonishing, I can see the threat that some see as well. China owns a great portion of American debt. People have argued that if they decided to call that debt, then that would be catastrophic to the American economy. Them buying up so much land may be seen as the set up for a takeover.

If so many feel that China "HATES" us why would they seek to help us? Not only by lending us money, but by opening businesses that could potentially help our economy. It's almost like a conflict in interest. They lend us money and get it right back.

Ehhh. I don't know what to believe with this one. Watching.

Chinese "lending" money is an oversimplification. They are making investments expecting a healthy return. It's not any type of good will gesture.

We live in a global village and the village is getting smaller. Resistance only slows your own progression. We should be encouraging all our children other languages and not just English. To learn Mandarin is excellent. It is a massive advantage to have.

Why do you say this?  The reason why I ask is I would assume that Chinese would be a good starting point since a lot of East Asian languages have a lot of Chinese loanwords.

With that kind of thinking, of course you won't learn a language but I feel that if you put in the effort and try a different learning method, like immersion, you can communicate with those who speak a different language.  True you may not be fluent but at least you can say you know a second language.

Most certainly, I speak Portuguese already and picking up Spanish. I'm just saying, I don't have the time for immersion and starting over on another language. 3 is enough to keep me busy for life. And I think not learning a language to fluency is almost a waste of time. I'm learning Spanish for business opportunities in the future, not just for fun.

Chinaman plots to take over the hood and possibly kick yall out and the solution we have is to "learn their language". Umm, good luck with that.

Unless you're an anthropologist or constantly working overseas, I don't see how that helps much.

They are long range planners and their tactics are almost faultless. They hold some mighty strong purse strings in the US.

It's not really about language acquisition. Who would argue against the benefits of acquiring a second or third language? It's more about why the push for Mandarin over say, Spanish or German, in Texas?

We'll watch, just as we've been watching them in Africa. Hopefully we'll see the forest, without discounting the trees, before their progress spells bad news for the rest of us.

Those of you experienced sinologists, thanks so much for your perspectives. BHM has a mix of everything!!

Plight of the sea turtles

Students coming back home helped build modern China. So why are they now faring so poorly in the labour market?

“I LEFT in 1980 with only three dollars in my pocket,” recalls Li Sanqi. He was one of the first allowed to study overseas after the dark days of the Cultural Revolution. Like most in that elite group, he excelled, rising to a coveted position at the University of Texas, while launching several technology firms. Now he is a senior executive at Huawei, a Chinese telecoms giant, enticed back by the chance to help build a world-class multinational.

Mr Li seems the perfect example of a sea turtle, or hai gui (in Mandarin, the phrase “return across the sea” sounds similar to that animal’s name), long applauded in China for bringing back advanced skills. In the past such folk reliably reaped handsome premiums in the local job market, but no longer. Sea turtles are not universally praised, the wage differential is shrinking and some are even unable to find jobs. Wags say they should now be called hai dai, or seaweed. This is a startling turn, given their past contributions.

I'm not an international student but the ones I know have several stories. One lived in a shelter in canada and took odd jobs to get on his feet.
Another had a relative they knew that took them in and they picked up work too.
My family that lived over seas (Africa and Europe) did so through teaching jobs so they fared better.

I don't discount that learning the language is not beneficial. In order to know a thing you have to study it and in studying it, you come to understand it. You have to understand the way it thinks and operates before you can beat it. They have studied us for years and they now know how we operate. They know what we care aboit. Thats why you can find a million hair stores, wing and shrimp fried rice joints, and nail shops in any given shopping plaza in the "hood"
They know how to get money.

In business school, the majority of my economics professors were "asian" of some decent. And I always wondered why.

The ONLY thing the black community need to be learning from the Chinese is how they consistently come together as a collective and take over.....not Mandarin. As yes, I agree that the Chinese are just as, if not more racist, colorstruck, than yts. There were many businesses that did not want to serve blacks during the Beijing Olympics. Every major city in the U.S. has AT LEAST one Chinatown. This news is FAR from being progressive for us. The backbone of the black community has been suffering from a serious case of osteoporosis, too busy wasting our dollars on stupid shyt, and this is very worrisome.

Asylum Fraud in Chinatown: An Industry of Lies

F.B.I. agents outside 2 East Broadway in Chinatown, an office raided in December 2012 during an investigation into immigration fraud. More than 30 people have been charged.

A Chinese woman walked into a law office in New York’s Chinatown and asked to see her lawyer. She had applied for asylum, claiming that she had been forced to get an abortion in China to comply with the country’s family-planning laws, and she was anxious about her coming interview with immigration officials.

She had good reason to be worried: Her claim, invented by her lawyer’s associates, was false.

But the lawyer, John Wang, told her to relax. The process, he said, was straightforward, and as long as she memorized a few details, everything would be fine. “You are making yourself nervous,” he said in Mandarin. “All you would be asked is the same few rubbish questions.”

“Just make it up,” the lawyer added.

It's definitely not going to be to black peoples' advantage. They are horribly racist. But at the same time, that's what you get for falling asleep behind the wheel. Blacks in the U.S. are not even in the fight anymore and it's sad to see such an extreme reversion some 60 years after civil rights. Matter of fact, it's shameful. And look what they're doing in Africa. They're taking a lot without giving much in return. No training, no skill transfer, nothing. I'm not so sure about the continent's ascent anymore. The whole situation is a ticking time bomb.

I took Mandarin in undergrad and was able to have little conversations with my friend's elementary aged sister who was also taking it.

For my career, Spanish is the language I need to focus on at this point.

LOL

I think the first thing we can do is to support our own. The reason why this so-called world economy exist is because us coloreds love to spend, spend, spend while the powers that be love to exploit, exploit, exploit. We can't generate wealth if all of our money is going to these heathens and not to our communities.

Shyt, as much as we spend, we should have our own currency, banks, government and everything else. Of course these crakkkas will try to nuke everything we have, but I'm the type that would rather die trying than to sit back, do nothing and hope there's some leftover crumbs for me to grab. The issue is that not many of us feel the same way, so its impossible to unite and organize smh...
