Of course our ultimate goal should be ownership, but realistically, if you need a job in the meantime, you need a job...

If you know of a company that's hiring, post it...it may help someone in need. If you know of good tips for snagging a job, post it...

For those with charges that are preventing you from gaining employment, see if your city/state has an entrepreneurial program for offenders.

I'll edit the OP throughout the day for as long as I can...

American Express is hiring for those who are interested in working from home...

US Airways/American Airlines is hiring in various cities...

$50.00 through a local resume writer.
Yes I feel it was worth it. Other services out there are way more expensive.

She re-did my resume plus made a really great cover letter.
She also gave me additional advice to help in my search.

I started getting calls vs. the never ending waiting game.

I read this on the Career Advancement & Financial section over at LHCF.
It could be beneficial info for people (if you are not already doing this).

Wow people at your next interview:

I just got a job I was under-qualified for by doing this.

I created a plan for my first 90 days on the job. They were surprised by how much homework I had done compared to the people with more experience than me.

Just keep checking, apply for any customer service job you just need to pass the test, you can always transfer departments after you get your foot in the door. I drove way to Fresno to take the test last time, it tis what it tis.

i want to just pay someone to do my resume

i dont wanna do it again myself only to find out later that there was some flaw which makes recruiters not even look at it (the template i used) and that ive been wasting my time...
i wanna know that i have a good resume and cover letter that way i know that its my experience holding me back.. not somethin 'wrong' on a piece of paper.
this is annoying. idk if im about this life.. especially if its not for a job i really want.
my other job i got just by walking in.. i hadnt even applied.

For those of you who've only had one job, but have held multiple positions at that job, you can break them up as if they were separate jobs. The company name would be the same (of course), just list the position, the description for that particular position, and the time frame spent in that position.

Also, don't be afraid to volunteer in a field related to your career while job hunting. It can even be in a field that's not career-related, it can just be of personal interest. This way you don't have an extended period of stagnancy on your resume.

Great thread.

Some advice:

Remember to set yourself apart from the crowd.

Keep in mind that there are thousands of people do exactly what you are doing (trying to get a job), therefore do something that will make you stand out.

Example, do some research on the company you are interested in working for, find out the name of the HR Manager/person responsible for hiring, and go hand in your resume in person to him/her. It helps if you arrive early in the morning, when they first open.

It puts a face to your resume and companies usually will notice that you've taken the initiative to get up early, get dressed, and search for a job, as opposed to sitting at home in your pjs while filling out job applications via the internet, like many others are doing.

My current job is not for everyone.  I have a few connections in the reproductive health field in the DC area.  PM me if that's what your looking for.  A few people might remember where I work, but my organization is very prickly when it comes to controlling the flow of information, so I have to be vague.  <<me staying on topic. LOL

Now to veer away a bit...there are two blogs that I follow that have really helped me streamline my resume and polish up my interview presentation style (among other things).  A lot of the career advice floating around out there is...bad.  It will annoy the hell out of the hiring managers.  These blogs address some of those things and have a lot of good information for after you land a job, dealing with your boss, knowing what's legal and illegal, and generally maintaining your sanity in the workplace.
