...those who've had it, would you mind sharing your pros and cons...?
Also, does the shot in and of itself cause weight gain, or do people just have increased appaetite because of the shot, and end up eating
much more?

Please don't do it!

I was on the shot for three years and I had experienced weight gain in the last year.  I had gained 30 pounds.   I went from  120 to 150 lbs.  Once I got off it, the fat practically melted away.

I used to love it because I didn't get a period at all.

Bunny, can you elaborate some more?...like did the injection site hurt? did you have a bigger appetite than normal? breakthru etc?

It was on needle in the butt cheek, not painful. It looks like getting any other shot, quick and easy. My appetite did not change, neither did my skin or my hair everything remains the same and healthy

from my experience on the board, everyone had bad experiences but bunny.
it can cause weight gain, hair loss, and bone loss. most doctors will suggest taking a calcium supplement daily.

you would be better off with an iud, imo. use at your own risk.

Run from that. it seems to really increasethe appetite and people I know really pack on the lbs. My sister was on it and gained about 50 lbs. she was really petite and now she's a porker

Worst thing you can ever do to yourself. Don't do it. My stomach swelled up and now I've been trying to get it down. Don't do it

I know you changed Gynos (you had Hardie then- say his daughter and wife the other day too) who do you have now? Who delivered Camp Fire?

I go to Dr Lennox Jacob (Medical Assocs., the man thorough almost too thorough, no pregnant chicks lol  kinda pricy) and Dr. Errol Daley (have you out quick time, nuff chicks waiting but I Love him pregnant and regular chicks)

Daley put me on yasmin I swear I took less than ten pills never have I finished a pack of BC (I know all the bad stuff and he presented me with Big Pharma politics and I trust him) and I BLEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD for a month straight I was also hormonal and snapping (the BF told me)

Jacob says he don't trust yasmin AT ALL recommended Copper - T instead of Mirena for me plus copper t was much cheaper. His whole set up is automated, in office rapid testing for everything and his door is always open and answers email quickly.

Never met a more non-judgmental doctor very pro-women Dr Jacob.

I discuss each with the other and Daley always jealous.

ETA Compared to Yasmin or Yaz, Diane-35 was a breeze but then again Ive never ever finished a pack
Embarrassed P Im gonna pull some Depo/ IUD thread for you BRB

Ya it's known to cause bone loss which is why they don't like to give it to girls under a certain age before they reach their bone mass peak and they don't like to keep women in intense physical activity on it for too long (like women in the military). But apparently it is good for women with sickle cell anemia.

I hear bad things about depo shot. Most people I know have an IUD or are on the pill.

first do your research. I would never recommend the patch or the pill.

then it is homones vs no hormones.

permanent bc vs regular

are you a smoker...etc

last step is life style...

usually it is between the pill, the ring, iud   or the implant in your arm for a few years.

You should try it for a year then switch if u want. You said ur afraid of mirena cuz ur bf is big ,but trust me, it won't interfere with sexy time

IF I can remember Depo had me bleeding everyday. No weight gain and it was quite annoying trying to remember to go to the doctor every 3 months.

Mirena is the way to go babes. No weight gain, no bleeding, no side effects just put it in and go and during your annual checkup the doctor checks if the string is still hanging. Then its see you in 5 years.

I only got one dose. Sex drive was non-existent, gained a lot of weight, lost my period for nearly ten months, and the surplus of TRUE horror stories regarding the DPS scared me away from ever considering it again.

I didn't like it, I had it about 10 years ago and I bled for weeks at a time. I lost my appetite so I actually lost weight when I was on it.

After the 3 months, I did not get another one.

Half of my family including me were on that stuff for a long time. We all experienced different side effects. Some bleed forever while some of us didn't. Some gained weight, some didn't. Honestly my best piece of advice is to try it out yourself because no one's body is the same as yours. I've been on Yaz, Depo Shot and Lupron. I'm done with dope! Why do you want to take the shot? I know it sounds like a dump question, but i knkw some folks who just wanted something to keep them from bleeding every month. Good luck though.

I work with some people that live and die for the mirena and IUD. Maybe in the future but for now just the pill is ok for me.

I was on depo for my first few years in undergrad, I didn't experience any negative side effects and didn't have to worry about having a period. I loved it! After a few years my gyno recommended I switch to pills and that's when all my issues occurred. I need to get back on something but not sure what to get.

My cousin was on it and she ballooned in weight. Me and her bf thought she was pregnant. She got off of it, lost the weight and is back to her normal size.

ETA: My friend who had a baby got on Mirena/copper IUD and was good to go. They wanted another baby so they had it removed and had one less than a year later.Smile

I HATED DEPO! I bled every day the first 6 months. I went from 135-155lbs and I don't remember eating a bunch either. I was always bloated and the hair on my arms got longer too. I was depressed for some strange reason...just sad all the time. Oh yeah...my tits hurt like mad. I got on the pill after that.

Fredericks delivered @ uwi... (wonderful man)...im back with Hardie now (he will sit with you for 40 mins --i know, the other patients be mad at the long wait, buit everybody gets the same attentionLOL)
Daley rushes through visits. I hate that. You wait for 3 hours then i rushes you out in ten minutes (fairly nice man, but that turned me off completely)

I never considered depo cause if I didn't react well with it there was nothing I could do for 3? months. Nope.

I got mirena cause my migraine meds and pregnancy don't mix but that thing was the devil. Looong periods, extra light periods, bloating, other things smh. I had it for a cpl weeks shy of a year. This feb will be a year since its been removed. I still bloat like flounder but its getting better. Idk what ill get next.

I think most folks already covered everything. My personal experience was this:
-I ended up gaining about 30 lbs. The wieght came on quickly and stayed the entire time i was on the shot. about 2 yrs.i didn't notice an increase in appetite though) and I worked out and it would not go away
-Major decreased sex drive.  i i didn't care to have sex at all
-My doc told me she wouldn't put me on it longer than two years because it does cause bone density loss. (I ended up breaking my ankle year 2 of being on it.) I've never had any broken bones as a child
-My period hasn't been quite the same since then. Its not a bad thing but i did notice a change in my cycle after it returned when i stop taking it. its much lighter. went from 5 to 3 days
-WORST SIDE EFFECT : I started suffering from the absolute worst migraines in my life. I hardly ever got headaches prior and once I started this bc I started getting crippling migraines. where i could do nothing but hide in my cold/dark walk-in closet all day. and they were often. every month. I couldn't go to work or school. my bf would come home and find me sleeping in the closet.  They have not gone away but the frequency has decreased dramatically.

Most of the weight I gained did melt off but I still have some of it. i can deal with what was left over. lol
ALL in all I would not recommended it as I had no "positive experience"

The injection site is just as any other shot. i got mine in my arm
