Woooooooow!!!! CryLOL Why did you post this? You want me to go to hell? LOL

He knows he's wrong! Maybe he has a thick accent version of sign language so no one could understand or maybe he was trying to do interpretive hand movements cause I just can not understand why someone knowing they do not know a lick of a language would go up there looking like a fool.

I go to ASL classes and I have ASL conversations when deaf ppl come in.
He wasn't making enough facial expressions.

I wouldn't know what he meant anyway bc ASL is based for Americans different counties have their own sign systems

As a person in school to become an ASL interpreter, I am outraged that someone would do this, especially at a public funeral.  I read that there are a lot of people who try to defraud the system by saying that they know how to sign, but in fact, don't.  According to the article I read, this is happening in other countries because the person in charge of hiring an interpreter doesn't sign at all themselves, so they have no idea whether the "interpreter" is legitimate or not.  That is wrong on so many levels.

Here I am, busting by butt to become fluent in ASL; to work in the Deaf community; to fit in as much as possible and this fool goes and does this!  I study every single night for 2 hours a night; I attend every Deaf event (there are various things like theatre, bowling and social events) I can attend.  Heck, I even worked a party as wait staff and I don't know how to waitress, just to have the experience.

I am so angry. Angry  I hope he is charged with fraud and has to pay a fine or go to jail, or something.

RATCHET!

I was thinking that he robbed them of the event.
Glad they set fire under him.

I go to churches where they sign and where a lot of the deaf community attend and some basketball games they organize.

How are you coming along Kitten ?
I love learning ASL I want to become fluent but I know it takes years to really become fluent.

The deaf people I communicate with are very helpful.
With my company I still can't legally interpret for them and for good reason.

Wish my church had interpreted services; the closest one is a subway ride away.  And on Sunday morning, I am not featuring getting on the subway...

I have to admit that it was easier in the beginning because I started signing when I was 7.  Why? That summer, I was bored and had just seen the movie The Miracle Worker on tv.

As far as truly becoming fluent, a Deaf friend said hearing people become better, but never really, really fluent unless you live with a Deaf person.  (Maybe I'll join a Deaf dating website...)  But I love it.  It's a whole lotta work, but I'd start all over again if I had to, just to be able to sign...  You have a lot of reading to do and the books are stupidly expensive (and not available used or online), but you end up keeping them for your personal library.  I was able to find a hardcover Medical ASL book on half.com (only $12 instead of $54!) and well worth the price.

There's a webgroup called AllDeaf.com that you can join.  You can skype with people so you can practice more. (Word of caution: some of the members really hate us "hearies").

If you ever want to skype, just IM meSmile

Yes their community is tight!

I'm lucky to find a couple people who don't mind helping me and teaching me.
The deaf ppl I know don't see it as a disability at all they are proud to not hear all the worlds cacophony.

Something about dues signing is so sexy to me.

I will def pm you

I practice with the book and Dr Vicars .
I have everything he has authored.

I have known a few people who are deaf, but they also happen to be mentally impaired too. I think I met only one deaf guy who was not. I had a coworker whose both parents were deaf, she would translate for us whenever we had deaf patients.

By ALAN CLENDENNING

The Associated Press

JOHANNESBURG —

The man accused of faking sign-language while standing alongside world leaders like U.S.  http://www.wsbtv.com/s/news/politics/barack-obama/" rel="nofollow - President Barack Obama  at  http://www.wsbtv.com/s/news/nelson-mandela/" rel="nofollow - Nelson Mandela 's memorial service said Thursday he saw "angels" at the event, has been violent in the past and suffers from schizophrenia.

Thamsanqa Jantjie said in a 45-minute interview with The Associated Press that his hallucinations began while he was interpreting and that he tried not to panic because there were "armed policemen around me." He added that he was once hospitalized in a mental health facility for more than one year.

Jantjie, who stood gesticulating 3 feet (1 meter) from Obama and others who spoke at Tuesday's ceremony that was broadcast around the world, insisted that he was doing proper sign-language interpretation of the speeches of world leaders.

But he also apologized for his performance that has been dismissed by many sign-language experts as gibberish.

"I would like to tell everybody that if I've offended anyone, please, forgive me," Jantjie said in his concrete home in a low-income Johannesburg neighborhood. "But what I was doing, I was doing what I believe is my calling, I was doing what I believe makes a difference."

The statements by Jantjie raise serious security issues for Obama, other heads of state and U.N. Secretary-General  http://www.wsbtv.com/s/news/nation-world/ban-ki-moon/" rel="nofollow - Ban Ki-moon  who made speeches at FNB Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg's black township. The ceremony honored Mandela, the anti-apartheid icon and former president who died on Dec. 5. Many of them, including Obama, stood one yard (meter) away from Jantjie.

"What happened that day, I see angels come to the stadium ... I start realizing that the problem is here. And the problem, I don't know the attack of this problem, how will it comes. Sometimes I react violent on that place. Sometimes I will see things that chase me," Jantjie said.

"I was in a very difficult position," he added. "And remember those people, the president and everyone, they were armed, there was armed police around me. If I start panicking I'll start being a problem. I have to deal with this in a manner so that I mustn't embarrass my country."

Asked how often he had become violent, he said "a lot" while declining to provide details.

Jantjie said he was due on the day of the ceremony to get a regular six-month mental health checkup to determine whether the medication he takes was working, whether it needed to be changed or whether he needed to be kept at a mental health facility for treatment.

He said he did not tell the company that contracted him for the event for about $85 that he was due for the checkup, but said the owner of SA Interpreters in Johannesburg was aware of his condition.

AP journalists who visited the address of the company that Jantjie provided found a different company there where managers said they knew nothing about SA Interpreters. A woman answered the phone at a number that Jantjie provided and said it was not for the company, and another phone number went to a voicemail that did not identify the person or company with the number.

Jantjie said he received one year of sign language interpretation at a school in Cape Town, and insisted that he has previously interpreted at many events without anyone complaining.

The AP showed Jantjie video footage of him interpreting on stage at the Mandela memorial service.

"I don't remember any of this at all," he said.

Ya it was so obvious. I wonder why no one pulled him out. How did they not screen for him? It's one thing to get a seat, but he was on stage!

It's like me saying I know how to speak spanish and getting up there and saying comes estas y tu comes estas y tu and some jibberish for an hour straight at some event and people just looking at me. So weird.

Awww, heck...so dude was suppose to go for a check up on the day of the funeral but didn't? Hmm, why not change to an earlier dr appointment? Whatever dude!! You frauded the system and got caught.

So is he trying to say he was signing correctly but when he started hallucinating he started to sign arbitrarily?   Why not ask for a break? When they are switching speakers, switch interpreters.

As far as the security issue, I'm hoping that he was background checked and cleared by the security agencies and our S-Service.  I guess it's not their job to know if he's any good at sign language or not; just the security issues. Of course in light of him saying he was up there hallucinating, I guess he could have been a danger.

Wait....so he wasn't even hired? He just walked up there and started to do random hand motions?

Wow. He could have been a threat.

No, he was hired. I just read that the agency they hired him thru is nowhere to be found now.

I wouldn't be surprised if he actually had a mental health issue.

The schizophrenic sign language “interpreter” who failed to relay a single real word while  standing  just inches from President Obama at Nelson Mandela’s memorial has a violent rap sheet including murder, rape and kidnapping charges — and South African officials have no clue how the  guy got on stage.

Thamsanqa Jantjie, who outraged deaf people with his hand-flapping gibberish on Tuesday, faced attempted murder and kidnapping charges in 2003, according to the  http://www.enca.com/south-africa/interpreter" rel="nofollow - South African TV news outlet ENCA.  He was also charged with rape in 1994 and convicted of theft in 1995, the station reported.

It’s unclear whether he did time for the crimes likely because he was “mentally unfit” to stand trial, the station reported.

The South African government is still scratching its head over how Jantjie — who admitted he hears voices and “saw angels” soaring into Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium — was chosen to  interpret speeches for world leaders at the globally televised memorial, said Phumla Williams of the country’s government communications office.

A top United States official called the crazy interpreter’s proximity to Obama disturbing.

“We’re all very upset,” the official said.

Linda Thomas-Greenfield, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairsin Kenya , added American officials are concerned about security and how he  could have gotten so close to world leaders.

Vetting for criminal history and other background checks for people onstage at the memorial were the responsibility of the South Africans, Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said on Thursday.

He added that Secret Service agents are “always in close proximity to the president.”

Jantjie declined to comment on his criminal history.
