Cops investigate human arm, legs found near Queens shoreline for link to missing teen Avonte Oquendo

Joseph Stepansky/New York Daily News

The Queens Medical Examiner's staff removes the human remains from College Point Thursday night. Police are probing a possible link to autistic teen Avonte Oquendo, who went missing from his Queens school Oct. 4.

Cops are investigating whether an arm and legs found near a Queens shoreline Thursday are those of missing teen Avonte Oquendo, a police source said.

The human limbs were found near Powell's Cove Blvd. and Endeavor Place in College Point about 7 p.m., police sources said. A sneaker also was found, sources added, but they could not say whether it belongs to the autistic 14-year-old boy, who went missing more than three months ago.

But Tony Herbert, a community activist who has been in touch with Avonte's family, said the remains are likely those of the teen.

The Medical Examiner's staff removes the human remains from Powell's Cove Blvd. and Endeavor Place in College Point. An unidentified teen made the gruesome discovery of the remains, sources said.

"The concern is obvious,” a police source said. “When you have body parts, there’s the obvious question about what happened. Was there a murder, or a drowning with bad decomposition?"

Cops responded to a 911 call about human remains found near Powell Cove Blvd. and Endeavor Place, according to a police statement. "Upon arrival, police discovered a possible arm and legs on the rocks of the location. The remains will be removed to the Queens County Morgue and the Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death. The investigation is ongoing."

There were a couple of police cruisers at the College Point scene from the 108 Precinct, where Avonte's school is located. Bloodhounds had picked up Avonte's scent in a marshy area near the school after he went missing. Cops in College Point, however, said the cruisers were at the scene for "personnel purposes," unrelated to the discovery of the human remains.

Avonte, who is nonverbal, has been the subject of massive searches since he was last seen Oct. 4 walking past a security guard and out of the Riverview School in Long Island City, Queens.

Photo resembling Avonte Oquendo is not the missing teen, cops say

A picture of boy bearing a striking resemblance to the missing autistic teenager emerged Wednesday but police said Thursday morning that the person pictured riding the subway is not Avonte.

Police investigating the autistic boy, Avonte Oquendo, are remaining hopeful with baited breathe that a picture taken on a NYC subway line will lead to his immediate return to his family and loved ones. A teenager snapped the attached picture which strikingly resembles Avonte with hair growth on what is believed to be the E or F train Tuesday, October 29, 2013.

A teenager snapped this picture of a boy resembling missing Avonte Oquendo on an E or F subway train Tuesday afternoon. Police confirmed Thursday the individual is not Avonte.

A picture of a boy riding the subway that closely resembled Avonte Oquendo is not the missing teen, police said Thursday.

The photo emerged Wednesday and even Avonte's father said there was a "close likeness."

But police located the individual who was photographed and determined it is not Avonte, who has been missing since he walked out of his Queens high school on Oct. 4.

“It was not Avonte. This person whose photo it was was in the precinct with his parents," a police spokeswoman told the Daily News.

The hope that Avonte had been found was renewed after a 13-year-old straphanger thought a boy riding an E or F line train Tuesday afternoon just might be the 14-year-old autistic boy who is nonverbal and has been missing nearly a month.

The youngster approached the look-a-like, asking, “Hey, are you Avonte?” according to Tony Herbert, president of the Brooklyn East chapter of the National Action Network.

The boy didn’t answer, Herbert said, and the inquiring youth — whose identity was unknown — snapped a picture before he got off the train.

He later posted the photo of a boy staring straight ahead and wearing a beige jacket and green khaki pants on his Facebook page, sources said. An administrator from the good Samaritan’s school saw the image and alerted police.

Since Avonte vanished leaving his Long Island City school, authorities have been frantically scouring the city’s subway tunnels in hopes of finding him. Cops have received and investigated sporadic reports of possible sightings, as recently as Wednesday, all to no avail.

Around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, residents near the Woodhaven-Ozone Park border in Queens said NYPD cops from the 102 Precinct swarmed the area, and helicopters hovered above a Burger King on Atlantic Ave.

“We saw cops coming up by twos, going into every house on 92nd St. looking for security cameras,” said one resident, who declined to give her name.

The person who sparked that massive search was not Avonte.

Tuesday’s subway photo emerged days after Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said he’s “not hopeful” that the autistic boy is still alive. He later apologized to Avonte’s enraged kin.

Family members were hesitant to affirm that the recently released image was, or wasn’t, Avonte, who has a fascination with trains.

He is described as being 53" tall and weighing 120 lbs. When he was last seen, he was wearing a gray striped shirt, black jeans and black sneakers.

After he was shown the photo, Avonte’s father, Daniel Oquendo, said he was “still hopeful.”

He believes one of the possible sightings eventually will bear fruit.

“We just need to stay focused and analyze every sighting,” he said. “The more sightings, the better. Eventually one will pan out.

“We’re still hopeful,” he said.

A reward for finding Avonte is now up to $85,000, CBS reported.

Meanwhile, another autistic boy, Robert Richard, 14, went missing from Yonkers and may have wandered somewhere in the Bronx, authorities said Wednesday night. Anyone with information on either boy is asked to call 911.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – A family’s worst fears have been realized.

The remains discovered washed up along the East River in College Point, Queens last week are a match for missing autistic teenage http://newyork.cbslocal.com/tag/avonte-oquendo/" rel="nofollow - Avonte Oquendo , the medical examiner’s office said Tuesday afternoon.

Oquendo, 14, was last seen leaving his Long Island City school on Oct. 4. He suffered a severe form of autism and was unable to communicate verbally.

But, attorney David Perecman added, Avonte’s mother was awaiting http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2014/01/19/dna-test-results-in-oquendo-disappearance-could-be-ready-by-wednesday/" rel="nofollow - DNA test results before jumping to conclusions.

More remains were discovered by NYPD divers over the weekend.

The ME’s office was still working to determine the cause and manner of death. Perecman was expected to hold a news conference later Tuesday.

The remains were given priority DNA testing. Avonte’s mother gave investigators a DNA sample, along with Avonte’s toothbrush and his baby footprint to help determine if the remains were a match.

The teen’s disappearance sparked a massive citywide search effort that included hundreds of officers, marine units and volunteers.

Missing person posters were plastered on lampposts, in subway stations and placed on car windshields throughout the city.

Avonte was fascinated with the subway system and Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials made announcements on trains for weeks asking for help finding him. Police checked every subway station and tunnel.

Avonte’s family has filed a notice of claim saying they planned to sue the city, arguing that school officials allowed him to walk out of the building and waited too long to notify police that he was missing. City authorities had defended the school safety officer who last saw the boy, saying she told him to go back to his classroom and he left the hallway. The city’s law department has said the case is “distressing.”

The family’s lawyer, David Perecman, held a press conference about the DNA results, and Avonte’s heartbroken mom, Vanessa Oquendo, was noticeably not present.

an autistic boy just wanders to a river in the daytime and no one sees/notices him? after drowning his body was never seen until like 3 months later..?
ok... Ermm they better not leave it at that. they better access every camera they can and talk to any/all ppl they can.

i remember reading this soon after he went missing:

Quote A study published last year in the journal Pediatrics shows that nearly half of all children with autism are prone to wandering — also called eloping or bolting — away from caretakers and towards objects of fascination, which for many children is water. The results are often tragic: Between 2009 and 2011, accidental drowning accounted for 91 percent of all wandering-related deaths among autistic children in America under the age of 14

thats true but unless this river is super close to school.. someone had to see him wandering/bolting.. thats not a normal site.

they could probably tell that he was a little off.. and would have tried to help him

I am with you about the remains not showing up for months?!!?
They were searching the subways for him because the family said he had a fascination with trains but this river is supposedly close to the school.... Three months and then a body washes up?
Its bizarre to me....

This news is so devastating as my husband was very involved with the search for Avonte. This is so sad and my prayers go out to his family. I cannot even begin to imagine the pain his mother is feeling right now.

my husband was with a search party looking near the river and the docks and they found no sign of him. There were also blood hounds that tracked him going in another direction towards the train yard. If he did run in to the water it must have happened very soon after he left the school. It is all very confusing.

Wow!
I really hope they don't just accept what they think happened and really get the full picture of what happened.... The thought that someone killed him and is still out there is so scary!
SMH. This is all very confusing and bizarre ... and sad. Cry

Business Insider reported that underwear found on the child were too big for him.

This tends towards some perv keeping him then disposing of him.

I hope the responsible party is found and exterminated.

My heart goes out to his parents and family.
