12 Years A Slave | dir. Steve McQueen

The long-awaited trailer for artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen’s third feature is finally here.  12 Years A Slave is the story of Solomon Northup who was born free, and who lived with his wife and children in New York, working as a carpenter and violinist to support them. In 1841 he was kidnapped and sold into slavery in Louisiana, spending long years in bondage until he was able to get word to his family in the North. His account of his time in chains -  12 Years a Slave - became a bestseller.

So what sets 12 Years apart from the handful of “slavery films" released in the US? (1) it’s one of the few films based on an actual slave narrative (2) the incredible cast (below) (2) McQueen’s previous films have been nuanced and meticulously shot treatments of difficult subjects (so probably no Django/Amistad-style melodrama then) (3) it’s set to be one of the very few films about slavery written and directed by a black filmmaker (4) brilliant actor Chiwetel Ejiofor in a leading role!

Due for release on 27 December 2013, the film boasts a star-studded cast with Chiwetel Ejiofor, Lupita Nyong’o, Alfre Woodard, Brad Pitt, Quvenzhané Wallis, Michael Fassbender, Michael K Williams, Adepero Oduye, Paul Giamatti and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Who said that? The only reason white ppl f*cked with Django was because of Tarantino. Nobody has nor had hope for white people.

of course he did!!! brad pitts character wrote to solomon northup's family back home and they got him freed apparantly.

either way solomon northup is the kind of slave i think about when people act like we just followed orders like sheep for the white man and were docile slaves. like we deserved it or something because of that. we fought back plenty.

Well, I wasn't sure based on just the previews but from what I've read in this article and from some movie-goers tweets, it looks like this movie will not shy away from the factual brutalities committed in slavery

On the last Friday in August of 2012, Ben Affleck's " http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/08/31/telluride-film-festival-a-sneak-peek-at-argo/?_r=0" rel="nofollow - Argo" made a surprise debut at the Telluride Film Festival. The film was met with http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/01/argo-reviews-telluride-ben-affleck_n_1848831.html" rel="nofollow - rapturous reviews from critics attending the prestigious and secretive fest, with many early viewers already predicting Oscar nominations for Affleck's third feature. Six months later, "Argo" was named Best Picture at the 85th annual Academy Awards.

Whether that trajectory happens with http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2024544/" rel="nofollow - Steve McQueen's "12 Years A Slave," of course, remains to be seen. The film, however, was a surprise addition to the already impressive Telluride Film Festival schedule on Friday night, and critics are gushing about the slavery drama, McQueen's third feature, in ways they haven't gushed thus far this year.

"Steve McQueen's '12 Years a Slave,' Anchored By Brilliant Chiwetel Ejiofor, Is a Slavery Movie For the Ages," http://www.indiewire.com/article/telluride-film-festival-review-steve-mcqueens-12-years-a-slave-anchored-by-brilliant-chiwetel-ejiofor-is-a-slavery-movie-for-the-ages?page=1#articleHeaderPanel" rel="nofollow - reads the headline on Eric Kohn's A-plus review for Indiewire . The piece is no less enthusiastic, with Kohn writing that "Ejiofor is a lock for Best Performance in the Oscar race, as is McQueen and his movie."

Kohn's sentiments were echoed both by the audience response to the film's debut screening (THR described the applause as "thunderous"), and awards pundits. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/telluride-steve-mcqueens-12-years-618625" rel="nofollow - THR Oscar expert Scott Feinberg wrote that "12 Years A Slave" should not only factor in the Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor race, but also in the supporting categories, where Michael Fassbender (as a slave owner) and newcomer Lupita Nyong'o stand good chances of breaking through.

Based on the memoir by Solomon Northup, "12 Years A Slave" tells the story of a man (Ejiofor) who was kidnapped into slavery in 1841 and forced to spend 12 years living in increasingly brutal circumstances. Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano and Bryan Batt play various oppressors, with Nyong'o, Sarah Paulson, Alfre Woodard, Paul Giamatti, Michael K. Williams, Quvenzhane Wallis, Dwight Henry, Taran Killam, Scoot McNairy, Garret Dillahunt and Brad Pitt rounding out the film's massive supporting cast.

"Had Steve McQueen not already christened his previous picture thus, 'Shame' would have been the perfect one-word title to capture the gut-wrenching impact of his third and most essential feature," http://variety.com/2013/film/reviews/film-review-12-years-a-slave-steve-mcqueen-1200593984/" rel="nofollow - wrote Variety critic Peter Debruge . "This epic account of an unbreakable soul makes even Scarlett O’Hara's struggles seem petty by comparison."

"12 Years A Slave" will also screen at the Toronto International Film Festival and New York Film Festival. Fox Searchlight is set to release the film on Oct. 18. More reactions from Telluride attendees can be found in the tweets below.

McQueen's camera fixates to brutal effect. 12 Years A Slave-harshest account of racism I've seen. Get ready USA-it'll hit in a big way. WOW!

There are scenes in 12 Years a Slave where just watching the face, the deep emotions and nuances of Chiwetel Ejiofor, will make you tear up.

“12 Years” is easily Steve McQueen’s finest film. A perfect blending of art & narrative. Brutal but compassionate. A great American epic.

https://twitter.com/wellshwood" rel="nofollow - - - Hollywood Elsewhere

John Ridley’s “12 Years A Slave” script is deft, direct, unsparing and highly intelligent. It puts Quentin’s “Django” screenplay to shame.

https://twitter.com/wellshwood" rel="nofollow - - - Hollywood Elsewhere

Masterful, tender and eloquent, “12 Years” nonetheless contains some of the most horrifically bile behavior I’ve ever seen or contemplated.

Powerful 12 years a slave appropriately brutal with a stunning turn by Chiwetel Ejifor which should earn him a best actor Oscar https://twitter.com/search?q=%23Telluride&src=hash" rel="nofollow - #Telluride

Toronto Film-Goers Walk Out of 12 Years a Slave Due to Horrific Scenes of Bondage and Violence [VIDEO]

Scenes of slaves being beaten, tortured and killed caused some audience members watching 12 Years a Slave to walk out of the film's premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.

Chiwetel Ejiofor, the film's Oscar-tipped British star, defended the violent scenes in the bondage tale, saying they were vital to director Steve McQueen's adaptation of Solomon Northup's book.

"Solomon's story is full of [violence] but also full of beauty and hope and human respect and dignity," he told The Independent.

"With Steve there to guide it, we weren't afraid to explore all that, and go to those dark places."

The "dark places" included graphic scenes of violence that saw some members of the audience walk out of the screening. There were several depictions of brutal violence, with particular attention paid to the scarring of victims.

The movie focuses on the story of Ejiofor, who plays Northup - a free musician living in Saratoga, New York, who is kidnapped and sold into slavery in the South.

An early scene shows him being beaten 15 times with a bat and then whipped 14 times by his kidnappers.

The director McQueen also shows slaves being hanged and killed. One scene, lasting 10 minutes, shows a plantation owner, played by Michael Fassbender, stringing up a slave to a post before ordering her beating. She is whipped at total of 41 times.

McQueen's previous film Shame depicted a sex addict, but this time it is likely to be the violence that will attract attention.

There was a 10-minute standing ovation for the film at the Toronto Film Festival, which left many in the audience reduced to tears. Comparisons have been made between 12 Years a Slave and Schindler's List.Ermm

The film is hotly tipped as a winner for next year's Oscars with a Best Picture nomination most likely.

McQueen and his cast, which also includes Brad Pitt, took the stage after its official world premiere to answer questions.

McQueen told the audience he wanted to adapt Northup's story to show the harsh realities of slavery. "I wanted to see that story on film," said the London-born film-maker. "It's that simple."

Pitt, who also served as producer, said: "Steve was the first to ask why there have not been more films on the US history of slavery. It's a question it took a Brit to ask."

Oh please!

If they can handle "The Passion of The Christ", they can handle this. A lot of people don't want to hear the truth and try to romanticize things for their benefit.

I wanna see this movie. Thumbs Up

he was great in kinky boots, amistad, dirty pretty things and inside man. i enjoy him on screen and feel he has great presence. among a few, he and don cheadle need to always have work as far as i'm concerned.

while we are hit and miss when we agree, it ain't just you.

white people need to stop that tired ass comparison. it's not a contest and if it were, that sh!t was a drop in the bucket held next to the slave trade. and unlike the holocaust, we didn't have a white society to assimilate back into or land that was given to us and money to go with it.

i love people as a whole, but yeah, spare me that sh!t.

oh that makes sense then. So why folks fussing about it not showing in their areas this weekend? I know we get everything here first but they need to slow their rolls and just wait lol.

eta: me and some friends were discussing how great the movie was on FB and other friends kept posting that they couldn't find it (with a lot of exclamation marks and comments like "no surprise it's not showing here.") Let me tell these folks it's not really been released yet before they burn down the theater LOL

McQueen is married to a white woman too lmao

I change my mind about seeing the movie. The original was great and now I'm side eyeing McQueen's failure to mention that the story has been told before on the big screen.

Something is fishy about that. Ion trust them new kneegroes ova there.

Wikipedia says the other movie based on 12 years a slave was called "Solomon Northup's Odyssey" and that was a TV movie that aired on PBS. I don't know what big screen movie she is referencing.

big screen, small screen tomato, tamato. point is, the story has been made into film before and in none of the many interviews I've seen or read about from mcqueen does he make even the smallest of references to this fact. Like I said, I find it very fishy at best.

Noney, I agree there should be some mention of Gordon's movie.

I was just asking for clarification though, because it's possible that I missed another theater movie about it since I rarely go to the movies anymore. But I do usually try to keep up with what's out lol. Thanks bhm

Took about 30 seconds of googling to find a small reference.

STEVE McQUEEN:  The book read like a script. It was a script already—there it was, on the page—and with every turn of the page, there was another huge revelation. For anyone who thinks that they know slavery—you read that book and you do a double take. It was just stunning to me that I'd never known about it. In fact, the majority of the people who I spoke to about the story had no idea about it. I was like, "How did I not know about this book?" It was like reading Anne Frank's diary for the first time. I was surprised that this story had never really been thought of as material for a film before. I mean, Gordon Parks had done something on Northup ...

MITCHELL:
Yeah, it was a public-television thing that followed Northup's story [the 1984 American Playhouse film Solomon Northup's Odyssey].

McQUEEN: Yeah. But I was just shocked that I didn't know this story, and immediately became very passionate that I wanted to make it into a movie.

And I think there is a pretty big (and tangible) difference between a film for TV - one that http://www.nytimes.com/1985/02/11/arts/tv-film-by-parks-looks-at-slavery.html" rel="nofollow - Parks said he had to compromise the material and make it lighter for a TV audience, even though he personally thought it made the film weaker - and an international release by a director with the full creative control.

well color me half wrong. he acknowledged the original film (rather dismissively) only after the interviewer brought the subject up. kudo to him.

got anymore examples? rhetorical but I doubt it.

either way, I've seen the original and loved it. will probably read the book and love it too I'm sure so i'll save my 10 bucks cuz McQueen rubs me funny.

 personal problem

Steve brought the subject up and the interviewer cut him off to add more info. The quote is right there and in chronological order.

The point seemed pretty clear. He couldn't understand why so many people, including himself, had never heard of the story. Parks' film being a  (director-admitted watered down) TV movie seen by a limited number of Americans provides some reason why he, and many others, had never heard of the story.

ok. my response was presumptuous and out of selective reading. his dismissive acknowledgement came before the interviewer mentioned the original film.  even more distubing imo. yuck
