The CDC’s most recent http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/surveillance/resources/reports/2011report/pdf/2011_HIV_Surveillance_Report_vol_23.pdf#Page=68" rel="nofollow - HIV Surveillance Report contains the first-ever comprehensive data set allowing researchers to map HIV infections across the entire country. As http://content.govdelivery.com/bulletins/gd/USCDC-6e9461" rel="nofollow - the agency explains , their new data paints a “complete picture of diagnosed HIV infection in the U.S.,” revealing potential trends in infections across different regions. At least one clear trend emerges among Southern states, where the concentration of HIV infections tend to be higher:

It’s likely no coincidence that many of those same states lack the comprehensive http://www.guttmacher.org/statecenter/spibs/spib_SE.pdf" rel="nofollow - sexual education requirements that would help educate their residents about HIV transmission from an early age. Health classes in Texas, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Louisiana aren’t required to provide any kind of medically accurate information about HIV. And in two of those states — Texas and Florida — public schools don’t have to offer any type of sexual health education whatsoever.

In fact, http://thinkprogress.org/health/2012/09/06/808731/study-just-20-states-mandate-both-sex-ed-and-hiv-ed/" rel="nofollow - just 20 states across the country mandate both sex education and HIV education, while the rest of country’s youth are growing up with http://thinkprogress.org/health/2012/08/22/724571/california-school-district-teaches-students-to-prevent-stds-with-plenty-of-rest/" rel="nofollow - significant gaps in their knowledge about sexual health. That’s especially troubling amid reports that, even though new cases of HIV in the U.S. are http://thinkprogress.org/health/2012/12/19/1363821/new-cases-of-hiv-infection-cdc/" rel="nofollow - beginning to stabilize , young people still http://thinkprogress.org/health/2012/11/28/1250131/young-americans-hiv/" rel="nofollow - continue to put themselves at risk for the virus.

The HIV epidemic continues to take a http://content.govdelivery.com/bulletins/gd/USCDC-6e9461" rel="nofollow - disproportionate toll on men who have sex with men (MSM) — 62 percent of all HIV diagnoses are attributed to male-to-male sexual behavior, even though MSM represent just two percent of the U.S. population — yet the nation’s sexual health requirements also lag behind when it comes to sexual orientation. None of the southern states with the highest rates of HIV infection require public schools to provide http://www.guttmacher.org/statecenter/spibs/spib_SE.pdf" rel="nofollow - LGBT-inclusive information in their health classes — and Alabama, South Carolina, and Texas actually stipulate that teachers must impart negative, shame-based information about homosexuality.

this article is trying to say there is no mandate to to teach sex education.

Also, as far as the rates being high in FL I know one of the biggest places that has a high rate is the Villages which is an old folks retirement town.

My sister in FL told me about that at the Villages. It was a few years ago I think. No risk of pregnancy, Viagra, and lack of sex education (they said).

i should probably rethink not being ready for marriage.  it's time.  but now even marriage isnt safe. Disapprove

-----------

Recent(2010) data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that 1 in 5 sexually active gay and bisexual men in America are HIV-positive but that 44% of them don’t know it.

More than 8,000 self-identifying gay and bisexual men (or, as the researchers call them, MSM, for men who have sex with men) were tested by CDC workers in the 21 American cities with the highest infection rates. The gay population in Baltimore had the highest rates of HIV infection, at 38%, while Atlanta scored lowest, at 6%.

HIV is a growing problem in other groups as well. The CDC study also found that the HIV infection rate in heterosexual black women is higher than in their white or Hispanic counterparts, and even higher than rates in Hispanic gay men.  http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/topics/women/resources/factsheets/women.htm" rel="nofollow - According to another CDC study , HIV infection was the leading cause of death for black women aged 25 to 34. Fully 81% of American women living with HIV are women of color.

When only one sex is taught they must be sexually responsible, of course numbers will be disproportionate.

I think race has nothing to do with a man ignorance regarding condoms .

Not wearing one at all

This wasn’t actually part of the study, but we should add that #15 is this: Not using one at all. According to the (most recent) National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior, only 45 percent of men ages 18 to 24 used a condom with their last sexual partner. And as the age groups increased, the stats only got worse: Only 29.3 percent of men ages 25 to 34 used condoms and 21.3 percent of men between ages 35 and 44

HIV Incidence Estimate

Incidence is the number of new HIV infections that occur during a given year. CDC estimates that approximately 50,000 people in the United States are newly infected with HIV each year. In 2010 (the most recent year that data are available), there were an estimated 47,500 new HIV infections.2 Nearly two thirds of these new infections occurred in gay and bisexual men. Black/African American men and women were also highly affected and were estimated to have an HIV incidence rate that was almost 8 times as high as the incidence rate among whites. Visit the http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/topics/surveillance/incidence.htm" rel="nofollow - HIV incidence page for more details.

Diagnoses of HIV Infection, by Race/Ethnicity

CDC tracks diagnoses of HIV infection information on seven racial and ethnic groups: American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian/other Pacific Islander, white, and multiple races.

In 2011, the estimated number of diagnoses of HIV infection in the United States was as follows:

Race or Ethnicity Estimated Number of Diagnoses of HIV Infection, 2011
American Indian/Alaska Native 212
Asian 982
Black/African American 23,168
Hispanic/Latinoa 10,159
Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander 78
White 13,846
Multiple Races 827
a Hispanics/Latinos can be of any race.

Yeah, unfortunately we can't be in denial on who is makin up the number of infected. A lot of ppl, of all colors are going unprotected but clearly the disease is not as prelavant in their communities so we have to face the facts. You are more likely to be HIV positive in America if you are black or gay. It doesn't mean that you're safe dating interracially but it does mean that you have to know whats out there. There's a lot of analogies I could use but I don't feel like it.

But let's please not let black pride blind us. I hear too many black ppl in denial coughcoughpositivekcoughcough.

We have to take some statistics with a grain of salt though. The world will never know the truth about white sexual behavior because alot of the healthcare facilities they go to are private & don't report data whereas many blacks go to the public health clinic and they are going to send those numbers to the CDC.

I agree and my comment was basically Speaking on men in general condom use . As many know , I work in the ER as a nurse . The number of young white & black people i treat due to complications from HIV breaks my Heart . I need to retire soon .

Exactly.

These stats as well as a million other stats make my point and have made my point for years and years. This is old news in fact.

Black people make up only 13% of the population but they are the HIGHEST group contracting AIDs/HIV. What is wrong with that picture?

Black people like to pretend this is not true and that everyone else is getting Aids too ... and they are ... as the stats say .. it's just Black are getting it at a DISPROPORTIONATELY HIGH level.

And if you know how Aids is contracted ... physically it is MUCH easier for a man to give it to a woman .. than the other way around.

I know several Black females that have it now and they blew me off years ago too.

This doesn't mean you can't get Aids from another group .. it's just that other men are MUCH MORE LIKELY to wear a condom. If I say I require it - they will do it but with most Blacks guys I have dated they may wear a condom once if I insist but the next time we get together .. they don't want to wear it again so we are back to arguing. That's why I am through dealing with them. Confused

I just not playing Russian Roulette

It's a LIFESTYLE in the Black community where women will sleep with a guy without condom. Everyone can stay in denial, ignore all the articles and ... take their chances.Ouch

I wonder how many Black men reading this post right now wear a condom EVERY TIME and how many Black women reading this post WILL NOT SLEEP with a man unless he wears condom?

Marrige is a MAYBE because alot of guys cheat and don't use a condom .. just so they can come home and sleep with their wives... without a condom.

They best defence though is .... NOT SLEEPING AROUND. DUH!
