I met a lady today who told me on a road trip last year they (her and some church members) drove through some small town in Mississippi and she saw black people out picking cotton just like you see (and/or would imagine) in slavery movies and humming spirituals....Confused She swore up and down that she saw this with her own two eyes in 2012....Shocked

WHAT??? This can't be true....could it?Confused

I think it's an urban myth.

Sort of like how everyone all of a sudden knows someone who knows someone who knows a child named La-ia (LaDashia).

I'm in Arkansas and a few yrs ago, blacks would load up on the back of trucks and make about $25-30 a day "chopping cotton". Someone told me they don't pick, but chop down the weeds.

My husband and his friends use to pick peaches as teens. They were paid by the crate, he said no one could touch them Mexicans when it came to filling a crate.

there is absolutely nothing wrong with picking cotton, especially for yourself, for a paid wage

rather than unpaid under the whip in slavery ... even then the shame belonged to the slave owners not the workers

no shame in work

I absolutely believe and know blacks to sometimes pick cotton in southern states, but they are definitely getting paid wages for their hard days work. Now.... babies tied to their back-----> I dont know about all of that.

Maybe it is their family farm?
Tying babies to your back is common in many parts of the world especially Africa. Maybe she saw some migrants??

I guarantee you it's true. My family has acres with people picking cotton and farming plantation style. It's very common in the black belt region.

I can believe it

Boys back home pick and store tobacco back home during the summer and spring
It's 800 per two tobacco houses. I think they do that in a week and a half sometimes less. . Depending on how fast you go. Not bad for high school boys.

One of the interns was complaining that he made more money in the field than interning in the office
