If your taxes aren't that complicated, google to find ways to file for free. Oh and the irs website actually has a lot of information pages explaining all the terms and forms and what not. I found it very helpful.

You are in college but you are under 24. Depending on the circumstance, your parents may be eligible to claim you and if so, they get your american opp credit.

If not, make sure you have everything you need. 1098T forms etc, and if you paid on student loans, you'd need the form for that.

If your scholarships are more than your tuition, that counts as income. If you had to buy a laptop or other supplies, you need to keep your receipts and have some type of proof that you needed for class (syllabus)

You can get credit for work uniforms on some state taxes if the uniform was paid by you and it isnt suitable for everyday use.

Depending on how much you made, you may be eligible if you meet the income guidelines and...

If you do not have a qualifying child, you must:
  • be age 25 but under 65 at the end of the 2012,
  • live in the United States for more than half the year, and
  • not qualify as a dependent of another person.

For those claiming a child that is not your own, some places are requiring proof of residency for that child...like a daycare letter, lease, or medical...something.

And if you are claiming eic for kids, for the most part, they have to be your decedent or legal descendant.

If you are letting one person claim one child and the other parent claim another...and you live together, only one person can be HOH.

If you are married, try keeping the same person's name first every year.

If you are married and the person owes back child support, make sure you file an "injured spouse" tax form so they don't take your money.

I'll be back with more when I think of them.

Oh, and make sure you look up United Way's free tax preparation program. Stay away from H&R block and other places at all costs unless your taxes are complicated.

Unpopular opinion....don't do you taxes online if you are unfamiliar with tax law/credits/etc

Let a tax professional maximize your refund (VITA)

I use TurboTax.com every year. It's easy, and free if u made under $30,000. It's $50 if u made over $30,000 which is still reasonable since other places charge hundreds to file ur taxes.

I get my refund direct deposited so its much quicker than having to wait for IRS to mail u a check

1098e question: Will I be able to deduct the interest paid from a consolidated loan that was paid off by my current lender? Or will i only be able to deduct the amount of interest that I paid ( which was only maybe a couple hundred bucks)?I keep getting conflicting answers when I research.

I'm getting my forms together and Im nervous about owing

OP you can always walk in to your local IRS building and have them prepare your return.  Just go to irs.gov and type in "walk in office".  Then select your area.  They list the phone number, address and services provided at each location.

that's a bit weird. i mean your taxes are simple now...but the tax code is pretty complicated and i doubt you'd want to learn it all.  someone might have to do your taxes someday :)

Cool. So I get to deduct all the intrest paid even though my lender paid most of it when they did the pay off. Which makes sense since ill still be paying for it anyway.

Yeah it sucks.

I'll see what my tax attorney can do but I'll probably have to set up payment arrangements even if he can find a way to knock out half of it down.
