I didn't remember that Whitney H auditioned for Sandra's role. And sure didn't realize that Sandra was only 10 years younger than Phylicia.

Five Mysteries of the Cosby Show

cosby-show-2.jpg

When The Cosby Show premiered in 1984, many media critics tripped over themselves trying to point out that no “real” African-American family lived like the Huxtables. Cultural relevance and political correctness aside, syndicated reruns have taught us that The Cosby Show endures because it delivered laughs along with warm fuzzies. The Huxtables provided a loving family atmosphere (along with an impressively appointed house) where audiences could escape for 30 minutes each week.

1. Why Rudy was a girl

rudy-huxtable.jpg

The original concept for The Cosby Show called for four Huxtable children—two girls and two boys. The youngest child, Rudy, was supposed to be a son. But despite auditioning hundreds of young male actors, the producers still felt that they hadn’t found “the one.” When they opened up the auditions to females, Keshia Knight Pulliam immediately won them over. The littlest Huxtable child thus became a girl, and Keshia subsequently became the youngest actress ever to be nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Emmy, at the tender age of six.

2. How the Huxtable family suddenly grew

sondra-huxtable.jpg

During the pilot episode, Clair asked Cliff, “Why did we have four children?” And he responded, “Because we didn’t want five.” Originally, Denise was the oldest, followed by Theo, Vanessa, and Rudy. But once the series was poised to become a hit, Bill Cosby decided to add an additional older child—one who was away at college and was thus a result of successful parenting. Enter Princeton student Sondra, the eldest Huxtable child. Sabrina LeBeauf won the role despite stiff competition from Whitney Houston and future Miss America Suzette Charles. By the way, Sabrina LeBeauf was only 10 years younger than her TV mom, Phylicia Rashad.

3. The mystery of the disappearing characters

cockroach.jpg

During the 1986-1987 season of The Cosby Show, Theo’s close friend and co-conspirator was Walter “Cockroach” Bradley. Carl Anthony Payne played the role in 12 episodes of the series, and might have featured in more had he not had a falling-out with Bill Cosby. Payne had decided to grow his hair out, despite Dr. Cosby’s preference for a clean-cut style among the male actors on his show. When Payne failed to comply, the Cockroach character was summarily squashed. As for Rudy’s silent chubby friend Peter, who always responded to trouble by running away, his only crime was Time. He was growing up, and while the writers could come up with story lines to accommodate Keshia Knight Pulliam’s maturation, it was easier to simply eliminate a one-note character like Peter once he outgrew his part.

4. How the Cos handled his Wild Child

image009.jpg

With her typical teenage carefree attitude and her cutting-edge fashion sense, Denise Huxtable became an audience favorite early in the series. Lisa Bonet, who portrayed the character, received the most fan mail and was the media darling during the first season of the show, particularly amongst male teenagers. Bonet exhibited unprofessional behavior on the set (arriving late every day, being argumentative, etc.), so Cosby chose to pass the buck by “spinning off” her character into her own series, A Different World. Always a cheerleader when it came to touting higher education, Cosby was eager to spotlight the daily lives of students at a predominantly black university. Bonet thumbed her nose at this opportunity, however, and disrupted things further by announcing her pregnancy and engagement to musician Lenny Kravitz. Ever-tolerant Cosby temporarily brought Denise back to the Huxtable fold (until oversized shirts failed to conceal her impending motherhood) and then sent her character off to Africa to work as a photographer’s assistant.

5. How Bill Cosby’s life subtly intertwined with Cliff Huxtable’s

image011.png

Clair Huxtable’s maiden name was Hanks, which is also the maiden name of Cosby’s real-life wife Camille. On The Cosby Show, Cliff’s mother’s name is Anna, just like Bill’s real mom. His TV dad was called Russell in honor of Cosby’s younger brother–you may remember him using the name on his comedy albums (To My Brother Russell, Whom I Slept With) and also in the animated Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids. And Cosby’s TV son Theo Huxtable was eventually diagnosed with dyslexia, as was Bill’s late son, Ennis Cosby, who was murdered in 1997.

I remember when Lisa started dating Lenny and Bill did not like that. I guess it didn't fit with the clean cut Cosby image. But I actually think Lenny might have been more 'calm' (then) than Lisa.

The mystery to me has been how Sondra was supposed to be their kid

Posted By: maysay1
Date Posted: Jan 05 2013 at 10:57pm
I remember when Ennis was killed...they blocked off the main road to get to my school so my mom was mad because she had to drive us all the way back home and that made her late for work.

But then when she found out what actually happened later that evening she was mad at herself for being mad and sad because she felt like in some ways bill was like her father...or at least on the few positive black males she saw while growing up.

Bill used to talk about Lenny and how he dressed(this was when they were shopping at thrift stores and wearing mismatched clothes). Lisa started dressing that way too. Cos was like 'can't you buy some new clothes that match.' LOL

I guess it's like when critics used to say the show wasn't realistic for a black family to live that way (mom attorney/dad ob/gyn); and someone would say "no , my family is just like that."

As far as the pix of Sandra/Bill/Claire: no, my family is just like that LOL

I just started watching Bold Beautiful and I thought it was cute how they have mother/daughter actresses (Hope/Brooke;Taylor/Steffy) that look alike. Most soaps will have a redhead daughter with a blond mother and father--they don't even care. lol

I wonder why Whitney didn't get the role. I never saw LaBeauf as a GREAT actress (not saying she was bad, but surely Whitney could have pulled it off).  Also wonder if Whit's life would have gone differently if she did get that role.

eta: like maybe Cos would have taken her under his wing.

'Cosby Show' Reunion: Bill Cosby And Tempestt Bledsoe Talk With Jimmy Fallon (VIDEO)

Cosby Show Reunion
A "Cosby Show" reunion on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon"

It was a "Cosby Show" reunion on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" Friday when Bill Cosby and Tempestt Bledsoe, who played Vanessa Huxtable on the series, sat down on Fallon's couch.

The late night host explained that the "Cosby Show" reunion was a happy coincidence since both guests happened to be booked on the same night. "This is truly surreal for me," Bledsoe said about sitting next to her TV dad after a clip from her show " http://www.nbc.com/guys-with-kids/about/bio/cast/tempestt-bledsoe/585213" rel="nofollow - Guys with Kids " played that featured her talking about sex.

Fallon asked Cosby if it's fun to watch his TV daughter grow up and he replied emphatically, "No!" "When she turns out to be stunning, then you have problems," he explained.

Bledsoe said the two get together often, but Cosby told her not to lie and joked, "Sometimes my checks are late and that's when I see Tempestt."

http://videogum.com/70081/the_cosby_show_reunion_on_the/morning-zoo/" rel="nofollow - The entire cast of "The Cosby Show" reunited in 2009 on the set of "Today," 25 years after the series premiered. "The Cosby Show," which ran from 1984 to 1992, followed the Huxtables and their antics at their Brooklyn brownstone.

Many members of the cast are still on TV: Phylicia Rashād (Clair) is about to star on NBC drama "Do No Harm"; Malcolm Jamal-Warner (Theo) stars on BET's "Reed Between the Lines" and makes guest appearances on "Community"; and Keshia Knight Pulliam (Rudy) recently ended her five-year run on "Tyler Perry's House of Payne."

Watch Cosby on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" in the clips above and below:

wow, so Whit turned it down. I was wondering how she wasn't a 'good enough' actress that she lost it to Sabrina.
I bet they thought she was crazy turning down that role.

Whitney Houston auditioned in the early eighties and after getting the job she turned it down to pursue her music career.

Sandrich, who directed the first three seasons of the hugely successful sitcom, recalls a young Houston reluctant to sign her contract because she thought it would jeopardize her not yet developed music career.

'So we gather in this room and there are kids from New York and Los Angeles and they are all signing their contracts, and this girl who we brought from New York said "I can't sign this contract."

Young Whitney: Houston pictured in 1984 around the time she got the job on the NBC sitcom

'And I said "Why?" She said, "Well, I want to be a singer...I can't be in every show... I have to be in every tour."

Sandrich says that he then asked Houston if she had a recording contract or whether she had ever toured to which she replied "no" to both.

He suggested that if she appeared on the show that it might help her singing career, but Houston wasn't convinced.

'I said "Well who told you can sing?" and she said "My mother, my aunt."

Sandrich believes that the then teenager knew right there and then that she was going to be a huge singing star.

'Whitney Houston, she knew,' he said.

When Payne failed to comply, the Cockroach character was summarily squashed."

Wow Dr. Cosby did not play that! Cockroach left to do Martin.

I have lots of good memories bc of the Cosby show but I always thought Good Times was overall the more funny show.

Why is this?

I remember reading something by Dyson going off on him, but I don't remember why the rant even existed

his ideas of what is wrong with the black community, the role men should play, people see it as old fashioned and out of touch. he preaches a lot of personal responsibilities

Interesting! Will read more into it.

The piece by Dyson, "Is Bill Cosby Right?" had to do with Cosby's stances on AAs living in poverty. From what I remember in some parts, Dyson is pretty much calling him an out-of-touch hypocrite for his opinions towards those unable, or in his eyes unwilling, to move up class wise.

A different world was great--this was back in the day when people could wear greek letters on tv

Bill used to talk about Lenny and how he dressed(this was when they were shopping at thrift stores and wearing mismatched clothes). Lisa started dressing that way too. Cos was like 'can't you buy some new clothes that match.' LOL

U gotta think like a television producer. What type of show would garner more black television viewers? Let's say a Cosby-type show and a show like Shawty Lo's 10 baby mama's are being pitched. I'm sure the women of BHM would watch the Cosby-type of show but yall would also check out the Shawty Lo show. Then when you think about the less conscious black audience they'd probably skip the Cosby show but tune into the Shawty Lo reality show. So they only gonna put money into shows that get the biggest audiences.

This reminds of this video I watched about black business and what you can sell to the black community right now. Check it out, it's some good game in it.

Nope.
They'd call it corny.
I watch pretty much anything with a black cast though.
I'm weird.

Reed Between the Lines**** is very similar to the Cosby show and barely anyone watches it. There will also be a show about a black first family, but I'm not quite sure who will watch that either.

Good Times was real. I had an aunt that would hit her kids with a long thin brown extension cord. I remember her kids crying not to be hit like Penny.
