I've always wondered why there is such a heavy concentration of gay black women and men in Atlanta...because not only is there a heavy concentration but they're very OUT...

i'm saying this in contrast to liberal California where there is a large concentration of gays but they're not as out and loud visually as the ones in Atlanta on a daily basis...i.e. seeing gay men in female clothing in public places often, lesbians openly hitting on girls, etc.

I was just wondering what it was about Atlanta that makes the atmosphere like this?  Black people in Georgia are conservative and religious yet there is little shame or fear in announcing homosexuality...so, why not?

i would post pix but i aint tryna get labeled as being offensive. Embarrassed

lol, i'm being serious because i am really curious.  i'm from San Francisco which is long held as the gay capital of the U.S. but the atmosphere here in Atlanta is so different to me...it was surprising, in a good way.  I just wasn't expecting it to be so ok.  Some of the people i've gotten to know here are really homophobic yet it doesn't seem to be projected in public spaces.

im referring to the irony of openness of black homosexuality in a conservative place in the south vs ppl trying to hide it more in a liberal place.  Like how did that balance happen of open homosexuality and very open religious, conservative beliefs.

ATL is probably the most liberal city in the "South" tho

It's like a liberal island in an ocean of conversativeness

And most Black people in America live in the South so when you think about it, it makes sense that most Black homosexuals would gravitate to a liberal city in the South... guess they chose ATL cus it was poppin' in other areas too

iunno *shrugs*

That makes sense @ Alias.

I don't live in the city, I live in the burbs(Gwinnett).  I don't know if it's been a coincidence but i've been having A LOT of experiences this week.

so there's not many hate crimes that happen down here?

Oh me too

I actually don't see this. I know they're gay, but they don't try to make it known.

I dunno about any hate crimes..

lol @ Gkisses

If yall don't see flamboyant gay men here in ATL, yall need to go to the men's department of H&M

Really?

In sf I know a lot of really flamboyant gay guys that wear make up and sometimes heels

Idk about Atlanta though..
But it is probably because of reality shows that show men from/in Atlanta wearing heels and lipstick so gay guys are feeling more comfortable and like its not a big deal anymore

Also, we can't forget gays are some of the most racist at times. Maybe in other cities, certain black gays weren't feeling apart of the LBGT community so they turned to Atlanta when they saw the black gay movement take off down there.

good point.

Atlanta is just a mecca for blacks period, major business, entrepreneurs, music. There are many opportunties here and that is why they move here. I live on the south side believe me there is no difference they are spread all up and in the surrounding areas of Atlanta.
My neighbor is gay, he goes to the same gym I go to and points them out all the time.

I moved to atlanta less than a year ago. When I arrived it was a culture shock. It's not like I've never seen a homosexual before....I just never seen so much flamboyancy concentrated in one area. Before I would only see this type of stuff on tv or Internet....never with my own eyes. I'm still getting adjusted because I find my self staring in awe and I'm slightly fascinated.

My guess for why there are so many in atlanta is....this is the "big city" of the south.
