From the first pic, it looks like her hair in the front is curled towards her face a bit.

The base around the leave out is in the shave of a V, not a U shape. What you have in your pic is a 2.5 inch U shape base which makes for a flatter install but you can't curl towards the front. You can still achieve the look but you have to be skilled in curling.. It's just the way it's curled.

but even in these photos where her hair is straight, the tracks are coming to the front (look at the roots)

Hmm let me see if I can explain it. or find a pic. I can't find anything. Look up v-part wigs and thats how your leaveout should look.

When you say V part, would the bottom of the V be towards the forehead or the back of the head?

Need to leave as little leave out as possible...I recently discovered this...or have a long leave out...curving the tracks also helps a great deal...

The point of the v will be towards the back of your head.

Can you do a V part without cutting the wefts?

Yes you can do a V-part without cutting the wefts just make sure you double stitch your tracks down when you fold them over.

You have to curve your tracks up in the front so it falls towards your face. If done correctly it will also conceal the tracks and your braid. If your tracks aren't curved you won't have that effect(unless your leave out is long and you have a lot of hair left out) no matter what your braid pattern is. If the tracks are placed correctly you can do anchor braids on the sides and straight back cornrows and get the same effect. If your hair is on the short side try leaving out as little hair as possible.
