Police: Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher kills girlfriend, takes own life19 minutes ago

Early Saturday morning, 25-year old Chiefs linebacker http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/9540" rel="nofollow - Jovan Belcher shot and killed his 22-year-old girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, at a house near the team's facility on Saturday morning. The couple had a two-month-old daughter.

Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan, who is on scene, confirmed the name of the player after speaking with local police.

Police told the http://www.kansascity.com/2012/12/01/3943246/chiefs-player-kills-girlfriend.html" rel="nofollow - Kansas City Star that Belcher and Perkins got into an argument at approximately 7:00 a.m. Saturday. Belcher shot Perkins multiple times. She was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead there.

After the shooting, Belcher drove to a location near the team's main campus and took his own life. Members of the team's staff tried to stop Belcher from committing any other acts of violence before the player turned a gun on himself. The Chiefs' Arrowhead practice facility was evacuated and on police lockdown.

Perkins' mother called police after witnessing the incident and told them that her daughter had been shot. Police arrived at the Chiefs' facility only to find Belcher in the parking lot with a gun to his head. As one officer got out of his car, he heard a gunshot. Belcher was later pronounced dead. Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli and head coach Romeo Crennel were among the team employees in the vicinity. Belcher reportedly thanked Crennel and Pioli for all they had done for him, and then took his own life.

"Pioli and Crennel and another coach or employee was standing outside and appeared to be talking to him. It appeared they were talking to the suspect," Kansas City police spokesman http://www.kansascity.com/2012/12/01/3943241/kc-police-chiefs-player-involved.html#storylink=misearch" rel="nofollow - Darin Snapp said . "The suspect began to walk in the opposite direction of the coaches and the officers and that's when they heard the gunshot. It appears he took his own life."

"They said the player was actually thanking them for everything they'd done for him. They were just talking to him and he was thanking them and everything. That's when he walked away and shot himself."

Chiefs players were asked to assemble at the team's main facility so that they can be informed of all the details.

The Chiefs are scheduled to play the Carolina Panthers at Arrowhead at 1:00 PM ET Sunday, and per Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer, the Panthers have been told by the league to travel to Kansas City as if the game will be played. The Panthers' plane is set to leave at 1:15 PM ET today.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

Depends on what the argument was over tho....I could see if he did it in her sleep or something  but the argument lead me to suggest otherwise. He may in fact been suicidal all along but I believe the act and having to face what he did made the act of suicide "easier".

my guess, based strictly on the ID channel Stern Smile would be that her mother gets full custody,  his parents get visitation.

I just read on Fox sports.com that Belcher shot his gf in his home, in front of his mother:

Authorities reported receiving a call Saturday morning from a woman who said her daughter had been shot multiple times at a residence about five miles from the Arrowhead complex. The call came from Belcher's mother, who referred to the victim as her daughter, leading to some initial confusion.

''She treated Kasandra like a daughter,'' Snapp said. Belcher's mother, who is from New York, had recently moved in with the couple, ''probably to help out with the baby,'' Snapp said.

Police then received a phone call from the Chiefs' training facility.

''The description matched the suspect description from that other address. We kind of knew what we were dealing with,'' Snapp said. The player was ''holding a gun to his head'' as he stood in front of the front doors of the practice facility.

''And there were Pioli and Crennel and another coach or employee was standing outside and appeared to be talking to him. It appeared they were talking to the suspect,'' Snapp said. ''The suspect began to walk in the opposite direction of the coaches and the officers and that's when they heard the gunshot. It appears he took his own life.''

The coaches told police they never felt in any danger, Snapp said.

''They said the player was actually thanking them for everything they'd done for him,'' he said. ''They were just talking to him and he was thanking them and everything. That's when he walked away and shot himself.''

Jovan Belcher's relationship called strained

http://assets.nydailynews.com/polopoly_fs/1.1211704.1354410811!/img/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/landscape_635/belcher-7.jpg

The relationship between Kasandra Perkins and http://www.newsday.com/topics//Kansas_City_Chiefs" rel="nofollow - Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher was on and off and marked by tension that had escalated after the birth of their daughter, according to a relative and a friend of Perkins. She was fatally shot Saturday by Belcher before he killed himself.

In a phone interview Sunday, Angela Perkins, 32, who said she is the victim's cousin, said Belcher and Perkins who she called Kasi had "been having a lot of problems. They weren't getting along for quite a while."

Perkins, who said she spent time at the couple's home both before and after their 3-month-old daughter was born, said the stress of having a baby just before the season and Belcher's constant time away from home for practice and road games "really put a strain" on their relationship.

"There was just a lot going on. She was stressed. He was stressed," said Perkins. Arguing was "a regular thing. It just started to go bad, but they had the child, and they were trying to make it work."

Across the street from the Jackson County medical examiner's office in http://www.newsday.com/topics//Kansas_City,_MO" rel="nofollow - Kansas City, Mo ., where friends and relatives of Perkins and Belcher had parked, Lynell Diggs, a friend of Perkins, confirmed the relationship was troubled.

"He didn't want her going out with the baby at home," said Diggs who also said she had attended the http://www.newsday.com/topics//Trey_Songz" rel="nofollow - Trey Songz concert Friday night with Perkins.

Diggs said Perkins had expressed concern about Belcher's mental state. "She knew something was off with him," she said, adding that Perkins had talked of it at a restaurant after the show.

"She went out to take a break. She was dealing with a lot," Diggs said of Perkins' desire to go to the concert. "I can't believe he did this to her. Tell people how good she was. She was special."

Perkins and a http://www.newsday.com/topics//Kansas_City,_MO" rel="nofollow - Kansas City , http://www.newsday.com/topics//Missouri" rel="nofollow - Missouri police spokesman says the baby, Zoey Michelle Belcher, is in her grandmother's custody, safe and unharmed.

Perkins said the plan for now is for the baby to go to http://www.newsday.com/topics//Long_Island,_NY" rel="nofollow - Long Island to live.

Back in http://www.newsday.com/topics//West_Babylon,_NY" rel="nofollow - West Babylon , family and neighbors of Belcher, who was raised there, struggled Sunday to reconcile the violent circumstances surrounding his death with the man they knew.

"No one knows what happened but those two. I wish he would have said something to someone . . . We're all coming together. It shocks all of us," said Eric Oakes, 20, a cousin of Belcher.

He described Belcher, 25, and Perkins, 22, as a happy couple and said Belcher's mother, Cheryl Shepherd, 58, had been out visiting her son to help care for the baby. She is now expected to return home Sunday or Monday with the child. Funeral arrangements are pending, Oakes said, adding that as long as the baby has the grandmother and family, the baby will be fine.

Oakes said Belcher was "more than a cousin, he was a father figure." Oakes, a former running back for West Babylon High School who was wearing a Kansas City Chiefs jersey with Belcher's number, 59, said, "He's the reason I started playing http://www.newsday.com/topics//Football_at_the_2012_Summer_Olympics" rel="nofollow - football ."

Oakes said his cousin didn't experience any head trauma as of late from football and that he wasn't on any medication.

"It's hard to figure out," said Emanual Logan, who lives next door, and watched Belcher grow up.

"He was a pleasant guy," said Logan, recalling how Belcher hosted a block party for children in the neighborhood this past summer.

"It's really out of character for him, but there must have been something in his past to suggest he could commit an act like this," said former neighbor Marieme Lo, 37.

yeah they say her family has been contacted..but are understandably refusing to release any statements at the time.

in my friends case...
side a is like its my child's child-- let me raise my grandbaby.
side b is like- you raised a killer- gimme my grandbaby.

these type of things hardly end peacefully.

I did read that the KC chiefs set up a fund for the baby today. so i applaud them for that.

What percentage of the population plays professional football?
Extremely small.

How many professional football players have we seen shoot themselves?
Too many. Definitely overrepresented.

I hope they are doing extensive research on all these brains.

Subjecting yourself to repeated head trauma ain't no joke. One of my friends played football all throughout his life including four years of division one SEC football. Had to give it up because he randomly passes out and is constantly dizzy after repeated concussions sustained from football all through out his life.

RIP to everyone involved, and my son will never touch a football.

frig, this is just an awful situation.
It didn't need to happen. Especially if it's over some trivial sh*t like a concert.
I have so many feelings about this..

The KC Chiefs had a moment of silence before the game for domestic violence victims and their families.

I was surprised. I thought they were going to try and honor Belcher. I would not have liked that at all.

i dunno if its in this thread
but his family is having his brain studied so they can see if this could be related to any concussions/football related injuries.

but his team is saying--he had no history of any head injuries.

If you play football, its safe to assume that he could of had multiple undiagnosed TBI (traumatic brain injuries).  He's a line backer--they purposely crash into other ppl.
