The Ultra Super CRAZY GROWTH Overload Challenge!
and the goal is to try to get 3 inches in 3 months!!

Timeline...
  • opening : january 1, 2013
  • closing : march 31, 2013
Rules...
to get all those inches, we're combining multiple growth practices into one challenge! consider this a hair growth boot camp, hahaha. the number one rule is to not be lazy. the second is to do your best, and not get discouraged. pick a minimum of 6 of the listed practices for better growth. growth aid usage is mandatory.
  • use at least one growth aid 3x a week
  • protective style 20/7
  • dust once a month ( not the ends )
  • ghe at night 2x a week
  • massage your scalp 3x a week
  • take a growth supplement regularly
  • cleanse scalp thoroughly 1-2x a week
  • maintain ph of scalp by doing acv rinses every wash
  • baggy ends an hour a day
everyone must also eliminate breakage by the best of there abilities by keeping up a their hair's moisture/protein balance. heat styling tools such as blow-drying and flat-ironing are prohibited! you can live without them for 3 months. and no trimming either! if you need one, try to get it done before this challenge starts. post an update post at least four times a month. after the 3 months and everyone posts their last picture, everyone will vote to see who wins the following categories: Shaggy to Silky (3rd, most improved condition), Thin to Thickest (2nd, most improved density), & Runt to Rapunzel (1st, most improved length). the prizes are everyone's praises and envies!

Thanks for starting this challenge yahya! Sign me up!!! I haven't got my relaxer yet because it's raining a lot so I don't have a progress pic yet. Funny enough I was writing a calendar for 2013 last night and decided to make a personal growth challenge for the first 3 months of 2013. Even started looking for the right growth aids to try. I'll post the application once I get my appointment done. One question though, does anyone know where I can buy the Shapley's Original M-T-G TRIAL SIZE online?

@khivey & texasmami, aaawww. thank you! : )
@Modelbusiness, welcome to the challenge!
@naynay, that's okay. would it be possible for you to start the challenge two weeks early?
@princess, you can dust the length of your hair, but not the longest ends of your hair. does that make sense? I don't know how to make it more specific.

for some reason I can't edit the first post or my application. I was going to add drinking water & eating healthy to the growth practices, add the new participants, and I realized I didn't right my name in my app, but it won't let my edit... @_@

So I got my hair touched up today. I had a good amount of growth for the first time but I had to trim about 2 to 3 inches coz my ends were seriously weathered from the whole protein overload thing and I decided to even out the tail I had at the back. I'm not pissed though coz when I look at my blog I actually made my goal of healthy ends grazing my collarbone. But this also makes me want to succeed in this challenge even more!!! My application will be submitted when I find my camera tomorrow. If I don't find it, I'll just use my webcam. It's real crappy though.

KunoichiNindroid's INTRO
starting length? SL, I dunno maybe 5 or 6 inches?
goal length? Grazing APL by March 2013
other goals? BSL by December 2013
normal growth rate? less than 1/2 an inch per month sadly :(
hair status? Relaxed
album? None yet
journal? insane-in-the mane.tumblr.com
regimen?  I scrapped my regimen because most of the stuff I was using wreaked havok on my hair. Protein overload sucks. Focusing on moisture now. Still looking for good silicone free moisturizing conditioners. My only staple would probably be castor oil.

growth practices?

- Protective style in box braids for 3 months
- Massage with MTG(if I can get it sent to me!) and castor oil everyday/every other day
- Baggy my braids at least 5 nights a week
- Take the following supplements daily HSN vitamins and B-complex
- Wash and DC hair once a week

and NO TRIMMING! I've lost too much already. Lol

use at least one growth aid 3x a week

Castor Oil

The GREENHOUSE EFFECT TECHNIQUE is simple: At bedtime, with or without oils, put your hair in a ponytail or your chosen style, and wrap your hair in a plastic bag, then apply a scarf. Remove in the morning and allow 10 to 20 minutes to dry and style your hair as usual.
BEDTIME: USE OF OIL IS OPTIONAL, APPLY PLASTIC BAG, APPLY SCARF.
MORNING: REMOVE BAG AND SCARF, ALLOW 10 TO 20 MINUTES FOR YOUR HAIR TO DRY.
YOUR HAIR SHOULD BE DAMP BUT NOT SOAKING WET.

I've been looking for sulfur and i thought i found it because the pharmacist told me it was 'sulfur powder'. When I got a look at home it read 'sulfur dusting powder with neomycin'. It's not pure sulfur. And when I looked up neomycin, the side effects included an extensive list of hair loss related symptoms! Not getting near that stuff. Oh well. I think I'll just buy sulfur 8 and mix it with MN. But where am I gonna get the nerve to go in and buy some MN. Lol.

Ok so I finally got my Liquid Gold! It'd been sitting at my mailbox for like a week and I hadn't had time to get it. I'm still in marley twists but I'm probably going to rock them for like 2 more weeks.

What is it I need to add to my original post besides a pic?

So I just got back from shopping and I'm glad to say that I finally have enough stuff for my new regimen. I found a 10% sulfur ointment in my pharmacy and decided to get that instead of sulfur 8. The instructions say to mix the ointment with equal parts of paraffin oil but I'm going to mix it with twice the amount of castor oil and coconut oil instead. I hope it'll work without being too drying. Haven't taken pics yet coz I'm a little lazy :P Oh well, another day. Anyway, here's my CRAZY GROWTH OVERLOAD REGIMEN!!! (crossing fingers and hoping it'll work)

Daily: Moisturize braids and scalp with Dark and Lovely Oil Moisturizing Spray, Massage scalp with a little sulfur mixture at night, GHE braids with a grocery bag except on wash days

Daily Vitamins: B-complex, Valupak Multivitamin, Valupak Hair, Nails and Skin vitamins

Weekly: Wash with Unilever Organics Shea Butter moisturising shampoo for dry and damaged hair, Condition with Unilever Organics Shea Butter moisturizing conditioner for dry and damaged hair

Other: Deep condition every 2 weeks with a ORS hair mayo but looking to buy a Vatika deep conditioner, also looking into getting garlic and parsley pills

Side note: I might have to undo my braids in early February to get some passport pics. They do allow braid extensions but mine are neon pink in front and I don't think that'll do :/

Just made my sulfur hair growth stuff today. Mixed 50g of a 10% sulfur ointment with about 80ml castor oil. The sulfur ointment has a faint smell of fireworks (btw Happy New Year Tongue) but nothing bacony or too powerful. Applied it on my scalp and it felt good and tingly.

UPDATE!

sooo... today I applied my sulfur mix again. I also baggied and took my daily vitamins. I haven't been following my weekly calender perfectly because I still have to buy that cayenne powder. I did a little search and destroying, too, because my ends have been feeling dry. even after I baggy them, they only stay moisturized temporarily. I've been doing porosity treatments and moisture deep conditioners, so I think it's product build-up or/and lack of protein. but I don't feel like washing my whole head, so I'm going to try to just wash my ends with castille soap, do a little protein treatment, deep condition over night, than do a final acv rinse. but just my ends.

On to the photos anyway and as you can see by my expression in the first photo that I was quite content with my handiwork.

I've been so MIA with BHM for like 3 weeks lol but I'm back now!

I've decided to take my marley twists out next week so officially next week will be my 100% start of this challenge. I also just ordered a 6mo supply of Hairfinity which will hopefully come in next week. So, next week I'll give my hair a good wash with my terressentials and go back to my flw which will allow me to GHE with my liquid gold hair growth oil every other day while taking my Hairfinity pills. I'll update my reggie to reflect the new additions.

And I'll also be able to take (finally!) a before pic to start my journey. :)

@texasmami0776, I hope it's the second and not the first, that they're too busy taking care of their hair and increasing their growth!
@thelurkingkind, you can try cleaning your scalp exclusively, like with a spritz bottle, using natural cleansing ingrediants. I'm currently experimenting with this idea.

Hey guys. I fell off the challenge for about a week. I woke up with an allergic full body rash last Sunday and after I went to the doctor on Wednesday when it got worse, I was put on a bland diet of basically porridge, potatoes and soft fruits with only antihistamine and hypoallergenic soap externally. It was hard taking my larger HSN vitamins and drinking lots of water because my mouth and throat hurt inside but I started taking them again yesterday since it's mostly cleared up. Also, so far I'm seeing good growth with the sulfur. I feel like I'll definitely have more than 1/2 an inch by the end of the month if I continue with my routine!

Naynay, you're hair is so thick and gorgeous!
Kunoichi, Good to hear you are doing fine, a full body rash sounds horrific :-(

I'm using a braid spray with sulfur as the 3rd ingredient so hopefully I too will get some good results.

So, I finally took my marley twists out and I'm a bit pissed. :(

I seem to have lost 1.5 - 2" of hair, as I was originally full APL prior to putting them in and now I'm at "grazing APL" *sad face*

Today:

June/July '12 Length check:

The only thing I can think is that I must have had about 1.5 - 2" of old relaxed ends from when I attempted to texlax back in the beginning of 2011. And either while putting them in or taking them out, the Marley twists must have broken off what was left of the relaxed ends.

So, on the bright side, I'm fully natural now. On the not so bright side, I'm behind in my hair goals of being MBL by the end of the year and it'll probably take til 2014 to get there. Thankfully, I'm on HF and LG hair oil regimen so hopefully that will speed up my growth rate so it doesn't take me til March to get back to where I was in November of last year.

*le sigh*

@thelurkingkind- thank you hun
@modelb82- sorry about the 2 inches. i feel ur pain although mine was to a trim. BUT CONGRATS ON BEING ALL NATURAL THATS A JOURNEY IN ITSELF.

ok so i have officially decided to wear kinky twists year round back to back installs. no more than a 1-2 wk break in between. i always retain the most lenght when wearing my hair in that style 3 months at a time.
i can still moisturize daily use my growth aid and even ghe more often. gotta keep all 6 inches this year hopefully more.

got back from vaca to find my scalp massager broken but still functional. i hope it holds up.

Thanks!

Yeah the only positive is that my hair is definitely thicker now, no scraggly ends lol and it's super soft and fluffy when straightened.

I was trying to tell my SO about my set back but he didn't understand and was like "but your hair looks so cute!".

Immediately I was like, "I need to tell the chicas at BHM...they'll understand my pain!"

@modelbus82 Yea, loosing length sucks! I unintentionally cut off about 4 inches of okay hair when I thought its V pattern was a bad thing. At least you're all natural now!

@naynay Good plan! I have a similar one for this year. I'm working on back to back box braids to make BSL. I'm also hoping I can get a feel of my natural texture and decide whether I want to transition soon. That's if I don't get too much breakage from lengthy stretching :P

@ KN: good luck on ur possible transition.
@ model: men never get, or well almost never get it.

i have just done tape measurements and i have grown an inch since dec. thats exciting cause i didnt think i retained any thing over my vaca but i was trying to be causious of how i wore my hair and how much times i applied heat and i guess it worked yay me. i am about 4-5 inches from mbl and i hope to get there by june. well im about to give myself a well needed DC. my hair is thirsty.

PS: i dont know what is going on but everytime i wake up my scarf is off my head. and im a person that never loses her scarf like not at all but for the last 4 nights its been happening. its crazy. im gonna have to pull out my satin pillow case if this keeps up.

Yeah the marley braids were so fun...but I'm going to have to stick to my wigs lol. I think it might have been because the synthetic hair was so rough - even though they looked soft and were comfy to wear.

Normally when I wear wigs, my hair is hidden under a stocking cap and I still moisturize my hair frequently.

UPDATE!
going back to college had preoccupied my time for the last half a week, I've gotten thrown off schedule. I'll hopefully be back on it by tomorrow. but good news, I feel like I've gotten about an inch of growth since the last time I measured.

so things that have happened... the last time I really updated I tried washing and deep conditioning my ends exclusively to combat dryness. this helped, but only lasted half a week. next I researched and bought nexxus promend overnight leave-in treatment because there were many reviews that said it worked and smoothed their hair. plus it was on sale! it worked, my ends felt much better, but now that a week has pasted the dryness is slowly coming back. but it might be because I was slacking with my daily moisturizing for a couple days. I'm also spotting split ends, when the gluing effects are suppose to last 3 months. maybe I'm not using it often enough, nexxus tends to aim for people that wash their hair everyday. I'm going to wait before I make a full review on this. I also bought the nexxus promend shampoo, because I find it rare to find a shampoo with good reviews. I loved it! even though it's not natural, I forgot how awesome it feels to have a shampoo that lathers!

since my new growth is coming in, it's been getting harder to detangle. so next time I wash my hair I'm going to flat-iron just my new growth. I bought a FHI go styling iron online. I've heard about FHI being good, but this was like $30! is this normal? I saw a lot of them around this price range, did I buy the right one? I thought they were $100 or something.

@naynay, the ends of your hair look so nice and full! I've always wanted to go to jamacia since my dad is from there. and yeah, I heard it's easier to apply growth aids when you're in braids and twists.
@nindroid, I'm so sorry to here that! I hope you feel better! I've never had something like that happen to me.
@modelbussiness, aaw, that sucks, losing 2 inches. but at least it'll give you more motivation for this challenge! when I unwillingly got my hair cut a couple inches is when I felt the most motivated and used growth aids. and yeah, boys just never get it. he knows you're trying to grow out your hair, right? you have to translate it into boy language so they understand. compare it to something he can relate to.

Haha I had to show him the pics like I posted in here and then he was like Geek "Ohhhhh I see". Lol...unfortunately for him my hair is going back into flat braids to go under a wig. He was so giddy today to put his hands through my hair because it's so soft right now.

I posted this in the Vitamin Challenge thread, but I had to share here too!

Update:

Wow, either HF is working better for me now or the addition of Liquid Gold scalp massages is really paying off!

Last week when I took my Marley Twists out, I was so upset that I had lost about 2in and was back at grazing APL. Randomly tonight I was combing my hair before bed (my hair is still straight from the length check last week - I haven't gotten around to braiding it down yet) and I noticed that my ends were reaching closer to my arm pits than they were last week.

Even though I'm pulling on my hair in the pic, I haven't had any reverting since I've straightened my hair. I've been wearing it up in high pony's so, by default my hair won't lay to its longest length. But if I really managed to regain some of the length I lost that quickly, I'll be at my short term goal of BSL in no time and MBL well before my wedding. ^_^

Sorry the pics are so big!

UPDATE!
here comes another long update post!

so I washed my hair this weekend, sunday, and I'm very happy with how my hair turned out! I used the nexxus promend shampoo, and though I'm waiting a while to make a full review about the promend overnight treatment, I can say that this shampoo is awesome! although it has sulfate in the ingredients, the hair feels like it been thoroughly but gently cleansed, not stripped at all. a lot of reviews mention that the shampoo made their hair shiny, I also saw this affect, too. the only thing is that many reviews said that since the shampoo is gentle, people would get build up easily. so I'd recommend a good clarifying shampoo for those who have this.

during my research I also learned that most natural shampoos without sulfate and cleansing ingredients do not remove cones. this includes acv, baking soda, and my hairveda amala deep cleanse. I still have castile soap though, which seems to be the exception, so I'll be using that as my main clarifyer for now on. maybe I'll mix some with the rest of my hairveda shampoo, to not waste it.

so everything I did this wash day: prepoo/ hot oil with vatika oil, shampoo with nexxus promend, roux ph corrector, rinsed thoroughly, moisture deep conditioned with homemade concoction, rinsed out un thoroughly, half air dried, applied (kimmaytube) leave-in, combed, air dried fully, apply heat protectant (mixture of chi iron guard and grape seed oil) on new growth, then flat-ironed my new growth. I'm mad at myself for forgetting to use my cayenne pepper. : / but this was my first time flat-ironing just my new growth, and boy did it make a difference!! my hair is so much easier to detangle, and the little breakage I had is completely gone. so happy. I also didn't straighten my roots dead straight.

I can't compare because I've never had a FHI platform, runway, or esp styling iron, but this FHI go styling iron worked very well. it straighten my hair in a soft straight way rather than a pin straight way, if that makes sense. and it was soo cheap! I think they're limited edition or something, and they seem to be going out of stock everywhere. after I was done my hair felt soft, had a subtle shine, was easy to detangle, and looked greaaat.

my hair isn't perfectly straight since it rained the other day, but I'll probably measure my hair and post a picture this weekend. I don't have a measuring take where I am now. I'm still trying to get back on track with my growth aids. now that I've finished my essays, I should have more free time.

but just because I've been slacking doesn't mean you guys can! don't follow my bad example!

Checking in, I'm still in these threads and they are looking funky as hell. Lol 5 more weeks to go before I remove them so they'll be hidden under a scarf.  Here is a quick video of how I'm doing the saran wrap method for length retention.

I only saran wrapped the very ends just in case my hair suffers any adverse reaction. <----taking no chances.

@modelbusiness, wow, that's some progress in such a short time! see? that's what I meant when I said that when you get your hair cut too short or lose length, you're more motivated to increase your growth! keep up the good work
@tatee, bad girl! was it dusting or search and destroying? search and destroying three times a month is a little more understandable. but at least your being consistent, that better than me currently.
@thelurkingkind, I love how your hair looks at the end, no one would expect a thing. my dry ends have been cured, but I wonder if I should try something like that, it's be more of a day thing than a week thing though.

now that I'm back in school, I don't have as much free time. so I'm changing my growth practices a little:

growth practices?
  • use sulfur/jbco mix twice a week
  • mini scalp massage after applying growth aids
  • use cayenne pepper oil 30 minutes before washing
  • wash/co-wash every once a week
  • bun whenever at home and baggy for at least an hour
  • ghe two times overnight
  • dust hair once a month
  • daily multivitamin, garlic, fish oil, and zinc supplements

Thanks Yaya!

So I'm about to PS again because I just bought a wig from a lovely lady in the M2M section. It's just too cold up here in NYC to trust rocking my hair out on the daily which I've sort of been doing for the past two weeks. My goal is to keep my hair in a PS until March/April when it's not as cold (hoping global warming doesn't keep it cold for too long!) My reggie has changed a bit as I think I'm really seeing good growth from the HF & LG combos and I want to retain as much as I can!!

But this is what I plan to do:

**At some point in February, I need to do a henna rinse - plus it helps me track my growth in addition to my growth chart tee**

Wash hair 2x this month
HF + garlic pills daily (garlic pill to reduce shedding)
LG oil on my edges daily
LG oil on the rest of my hair every other day - on these days I'd GHE to increase moisture
Daily moisture spritz with my aloe/water/MSM/essential oils mix

Now that I've managed to magically return to APL, I'm really hoping to be grazing BSL by the time April rolls around and it'll be warm enough for me to wear my hair out! Thumbs Up

*fingers crossed!!!*

How in the hell did I miss Miss. Model's update, umm that is some damn good progress in so little time. I wish my body wasn't a punk *ss and could tolerate supplements :-( Lol Your hair also looks thicker.

@Yaya, thanks, I removed the saran wrap today and the ends were soft yet strong! This saran wrap method is going to be a keeper. I plan on somehow washing in these things and then back in goes the saran wrap until the first of March.

Thanks! @Lurking :)

So, I'm officially PS'ed up until March/April (see avi).

I washed my hair this weekend with my Terressentials mint mud wash...I love that stuff as it gives my scalp a nice tingly sensation. I missed my curly q's so it was nice to see them come back since I had been wearing my hair straight since I took my Marley Twists out.

I also GHE'd Sunday night and will do so again tonight.

I'm still keeping up with my vitamins and water intake. :) Fingers crossed for something amazing come the end of March.

Probably in the next 2 weeks I'll do a Henna rinse. I have some fennelgreek (sp) that I bought last year that i really want to use, but it has this whole set up phase to it that you have to let it do before you can apply it. So, I keep getting lazy and not doing it. @_@

Wow! That's amazing growth for a week Shocked I have much less than that though it's still more than my usual growth Sleepy Hey guys I'm planning on buying evening primrose oil tablets for my painful cramps, but I hear it also has benefits for the hair. What exactly are these benefits?

I have to say, the LG with sulfur in it really works. I've been putting it on my brows for the past week and a half as the last time I threaded my threader did them too thin. And I have a tendency to get thin brows. Well, this Monday, I went to my preferred threader and my brows are much thicker. I still add some pencil to them because there are a few sparse spots. But for the most part, they're way thicker! :) So, if LG is doing that for my brows, I can only imagine what it'll do for my hair!

Hey Model,

I am going to have to apply that LG to my brows as well.... I naturally have thin brows and would love to see if this works.

I have also been applying the Lg to my scalp every other day...it really smells like oil (don't know if that makes sense)....might be too earlyto tell if  it is working but my hair does appear to be thicker...

i like the AVi..is this the same one or a different unit/

Different!

I bought it in the m2m section last week. :) It's a glueless peruvian body wave. I like it because I really don't need to pin down since I'm doing the Tootsie method, but I agree with the lady I bought it off of, the lace in the front is a bit hard.

Yeah the LG doesn't have a harsh smell which is good because when I used to make my own sulfur mix, it smelled so horrible I couldn't take it. It must be the "essential oils" mix they've put in that helps to mask the smell so well.

Well it is very nice.

I think I have become addicted to wearing these lace wigs as protective styles.  I love the fact that I can access my own hair to apply growth aids and condition.

I don't find the LG has a smell but it smells like oil...I think it is the castor oil that I am smelling.

See castor oil doesn't bother me in terms of smell. It's practically odorless to me lol.

Yeah I haven't really done weaves in forever because I hate not being able to easily get to my hair. I put a partial weave in last summer and barely kept it in for a month. It was just such a pain, plus I hated having to keep making sure that my leave out perfectly matched the texture, etc etc. I need to get a closure for it so I can make a wig, because the hair was gorgeous but the constant blending issue was a nightmare.

FLW are so easy. Just plop it on and snatch it off at night. I'm going to be GHE'ing tonight again, which is a must in this cold weather to keep my hair moisturized.

Checking in....

New growth is getting crazy. Have to do honey and castor oil prepoos to keep them in check. Really need a protein treatment too. I put an egg in my prepoo but it always makes it so runny.

You can apply sulfur on eyebrows too? I wanted to try my sulfur mixture out on my brows, but I was scared I might accidentally rub it into my eyes or rinse it off and have the sulfur get into my eyes. My eyebrows have been filling out since I started taking vitamins but I could do with a little extra. Hmm, I'll think about it.
