Start at a medium amount of heat and see how your hair responds to that.

You can turn up the heat gradually.. but if you end up with some str8 pieces, then you know you've used too much heat.
 
Its honestly trial and error.

I start with the lowest heat setting and turn it up little by little until my hair straightens in one pass.
