I thought you weren't supposed to use the term "African"?
Which country in Africa are you from OP?

I have a friend from The Gambia and she jokingly calls me "akata".
I wonder how many of you all know what means. It's a bit offensive.

-------------
Yeah, I did it. I might cry 2 tears in a bucket. Fuc. k it. Let's take it to the stage

You want me to list every country in Africa when addressing Africans in general?

Proud Ghanaian.

And yeah, akata is a common insult used towards people deemed uncouth. It's especially used towards AAs in a derogatory manner. It means lost one, but it can also mean much more mean things.

My highschool Afro Am teacher said we shouldn't use the term African because it's too broad. She said we should call you guys by whichever country you're from and that makes sense.

She calls me that Akata term in a joking manner. She said it means a lost cat and I told her that's not nice, but technically it's true because AA's are misplaced.

She has a best friend that's half Sierra Leone and half some other country in West Africa and she's a baaaaaad bish. She looks like a Black barbie doll. She takes my breath away everytime I see her.
This isn't an insult, but she doesn't look African at all. I can usually pinpoint someone from the islands or Africa, but she slipped under the radar.

This cracks me up. I remember my dad saw my report card. I made the honor roll mind you with like 4 b+ and maybe 2 A's and he was like I want to see more A's. I felt so defeated. I'm doing the best out of all my friends and all you can say is I want to see more A's. no good job sport, I'm proud of you. Just I want to see more a's.

I love the fact that fans of the original singer (he is white) are pissed because everyone gives Vusi the credit for the song. This guy has gone to most of the videos of Vusi performing his song and left this comment.

Vusi never wrote the song SAY AFRIKA ... DAVE GOLDBLUM DID From his album valley road released in 1995 Vusi changed the words and meaning and did a ok job but not as good as DAVE GOLDBLUM the author and performer of the song search Dave Goldblum Say Africa

African meat it tough. Dead I have African parents, and that ish hurts my teeth. When I was in Nigeria this summer, they said Americans like mushy food. LOL

When I make any soup for him, I use meat stock (no red oil), premium cut meats, and chicken breast (he hates bones). My mom sees the food and just rolls her eyes. LOL

When I went to Naija for the 1st time I was rolling at how skinny the cows looked and I kept telling my people "I ain't eating dat". Everyone kept rolling their eyes. After 3 days of only surviving on Agege bread and Geisha sardines(aje buta style)..... I went out hunting for any kinda meat except '404'. I was HUNGRAYYYY!!!! I didn't care after day 3. I seriously ate everything I saw and LOVED it...snails, isiewu(*sp), kilishe, suya, I mean everythang.

The Sapeurs of Bakongo

When you think of silk handkerchiefs, pink corduroys, tweed and double-breasted tailoring, would you associate such a style of dress with some of the poorest slums of Africa?

What you’re looking at is the phenomenon of Sapeurs, a subculture of extraordinarily dressed dandies from the Congo. In the midst of their war-torn slums, these men dress in tailored suits, elegantly smoke on their pipes and stroll the impoverished streets in immaculate footwear.

Dandyism or sapologie in this case, is not a fashion trend. In some of the farthest corners of the earth where true dandyism exists, it serves as something closer to a religion; a code of living.

Records of African dandy men go back as far as the 18th century when slaves were given extravagant and elegant costumes by their European masters to effectively ‘fit in’ with their luxurious surroundings. By the time the slave trade was abolished, liberated Africans had already begun to create their own unique dandy style, in some cases, doing it better than the Europeans had ever done it.

The little-known subculture of the Congo Sapeurs comes from la SAPE, short for Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes, or the Society of Tastemakers and Elegant People. The first ‘icon’ or ‘Grand Sapeur’ was André Matsoua, an influential Congolese religious and political figure who in 1922, returned from Paris, to the amazement of his traditional African countrymen, dressed entirely in elegant French clothing.

SAPE as the Congolese (and now you) know it, was not officially born until an emerging pop star in the late 1960s sparked somewhat of a style revolution. Papa Wemba, known as La Pape* de la Sape (pope of Sape) had an incurable fever for French fashion after multiple trips to Paris for his gigs. Under the strict Mobutu regime, freshly liberated from Belgium, any association with Western culture in Congo was severely frowned upon. Papa Wemba’s defiance became a symbolic gesture in the midst of economic deprivation and political dictatorship. Papa Wemba even established his own village that upheld a set of moral codes with emphasis on high standards of personal cleanliness, hygiene and smart dress among Congolese youths regardless of societal differences.
