Hey Ladies! I rarely start topics, but I think there's a need for this topic.
I have been natural for 8 yrs and a member here since 06. I transitioned from relaxed APL hair for 18 months to almost SL natural hair. I am now 'unofficially' (won't be doing my usual yr end straightening, but I did stretch a piece a few weeks ago) MBL.

I peek in the BSL, MBL, WL, HL, TBL+ Challenges and see ladies that are new and old, relaxed, natural, and texlaxed reaching new and long lengths! So exciting! But, we rarely see yall post about ya long haired experiences, reggies, products, ease, love/hate unless its in the challenge threads.

I know that as hair gets longer- reggies are usually set and life goes on, but I luv hearing and sharing experiences with other long haired ladies and those aspiring for the length. BHM (specifically the Natural and Growth sections) is home for me, but I have to go on other sites and lurk to get my fix when I would prefer to get all my hair fixes here! Lol!

So, ladies who are BSB, BSL, MBL, WL, HL, TBL+, PLEASE SHARE YA REGGIES, EXPERIENCES, BE VAIN, BE HUMBLE, WHATEVA, BUT LET'S TALK! HHG LADIES!

BSB here. I realize that my hair has grown the most when i stopped messing with it so much lol
i wear kinky twist alot and make sure to moisturize every two days. i have recently started cowashing my hair 3 times a week with giovanni's deep moisture condition, sealing with castor oil (my favorite hair product). I discovered my favorite styling product this past summer, dr. miracle's holding creme (pink label). its great for twist outs. recently started wearing wet buns.

im on my way to BSL by the end of the year.

Even with a low LSAT, i'm a hot commodity.

great topic! im currently a couple inches away from reaching my 2012 goal of mbl.
i'm relaxed. i moisturize and seal every night. co wash  and deep condition with my steamer
once a week, do an overnight pre poo with coconut oil and shampoo wash  and deep condition once a week. when i dry my hair i'll always air dry in a braid or twists. i also take biotin5000 but im not sure of how much a difference it makes...
coconut oil is definitely the biggest staple in my regimen!
biggest challenges since my hair has gotten longer is detangling, i find i lose a lot of hair! also resisting the temptation to wear my hair down all the time LOL
ltg is to master stretching and thicken up my ends

Thanks, ladies for ya responses!

Gorgeous- I feel you on wanting to wear ya hair down all the time. As a natural head, I only do heat 1-2xs per year, so I look forward to seeing my real length. But, now I get that same exhilirating feeling when I do plaitoits, which look like twistouts on Ms. Cleo. The past few weeks I had a freaking luv affair with plaitouts. I luved the WEIGHT of my hair! I lived for that breeze blowing my hair around as I drove. I chuckled and rolled my eyes (secretly) at the stares and double takes from men and women. It was a totally fun and weird experience bc my hair is usually bunned. I

I look forward to the New Year when I visit my stylist for my trim and straightening bc I can already imagine the looks of amazement, all eyes on me as she transfotms this mass of kinks, coils into a MBL waterfall(as my 8 yrs. Old son calls my straight hair-lol)

LOL! you're killing me over here luvmybiga$$fro!! yess!! the wind blowing in your hair is the best, and bunning gets so boring!! and i too love when people stare at my hair and even ask if its all my hair. for someone who used to glue in tracks all the time, it feels extra sweet to say YES

Lol! I luv my buns, but erry now and again I feel the need to unleash. I'm not all that comfotable with stares bc I find that to be annoying, but I luv the stares of amazement, especially the ones that start @ the top of ya head and go all the way down. Its that WIDE EYED staring and almost drool falling from their lips that gets me every time!

natural hair Grazing BSL stretched over here . and i retain the most amount of growth when i hide my hair either in kinky twists or weaves, but i just came out of a 3 month kinky twists install and i missed my hair... i am psing, with twists with my natural hair but it still is not the same for some reason but i just love wearing my hair out either twistouts or braidouts and i dont get to as much as i want to. there has to be a length i can get to and no longer have to worry about psing.
and yes ladies that whole hair blowing in the wind does feel good. driving with hair blowing and getting in ur eyes but you refuse to put the window up so (now who else does this?) i just put a pair of shades on to prevent that.
hoping to be mbl or grazing mbl in dec. thats about 2-2.5 inches to go
guess if i want that ill have to hide my hair again.

Hello! I suppose I can share some of my secrets. Doing exactly what I do may not work for everyone, but I will generalize the concepts. These are what most people know anyway.

Here goes:

Protective styles-----protect those ends the reason why most do not see progress is because their hard work breaks off at the ends. hair grows no matter what, but the length of hair is determined by how much has broken off.

Moisture--------nourish and moisturize the scalp. Be sure to use oil as a moisture locker not a moisturizer itself. for example, I run water over my hands, then run my hands through my hair until it is about 20% wet. then I apply the oil.

Nourish from the inside-------eat right! well if you are like me (picky, and do not like anything healthy unless it is smothered in something unhealthy) Then get some food based vitamin supplements which sometimes comes in a liquid. The one that I am taking gives me my fruits, veggies, and daily vitamins. I also take 4000mg of msm.

Exercise---------that is how the blood circulates better

Deep condition at least every 2 weeks------but not too much protein. I have yet to find an already made conditioner, so i might try the coconut oil, coconut milk, and yogurt trick one day.

Pretty simple right? I followed these to the letter I know that there are more factors, but I think that these help out the best. I have been using the bun style for 1 year straight, and I have reached hip length of relaxed hair.

Ooooh, I hope wet bunning works for you!! I'm currently going back to them too!! They got me over the APL- BSB hump (in conjunction with my HSN vitamin). I just have to remember to take it down every three days to either remoisturize or let air dry and re- moisturize.

I did gain a lot of good growth from wet/dry bunning. If I keep it longer, whcih I have up to two weeks, I'm bound for a semi-long and difficult detanfling section. But, to combat the amount of loss hair, I section my dry hair into 4 quadrants and apply either my Mane and Tail Detangler with olive oil along the length, twist up earch section and let it sit for a few. Then, I take my fingers and finger detangle each section and f/up with my wide toothed comb, which equals less loss hair. I can also do the same process on dry hair, but I will use Mane and Tail Condish to detangle, again less shed and/or loss hair.

I'm super duper lazy with my girl. I do the absolute basics and have a few styles that are my signatures and I'm good. Anything complex- I holler at my stylist which is 2-2 xs per  yr.

Nay, I feel you on the ps'ing to get MBL  by December. I think the weeks I had my hair out were needed, but I'm trying get to full MBL by December 2012. So, I'm back to bunning. At least I got to wear it out during some nice weather. I tend to ge a growth spurt during the Summer. Most of the times my hair was out was whenh the weather wasn't blazing hot and there was alot of humidity in the air.

Oh and the sunglasses! Girl, they used to be my favorite 'headband', but the one pair I had continuall caught and pulled my hair whenever I would slide them up my head. So, today the Hubby told me to get my shade shopping on. He knows I luv me some shades! I practiced on a few and no snags. I havent' done the others yet, but hopefully they are winners!

There will come a time when ya either luv ps'ing or you just decide to wear out more often. I think if you do the latter you have to remeber to take care of your hair while wearing out just as you would with ps'ing.

ITA, with this! I  touching think alot of ladies may think that puff are protective or styles where te hair is just not your shoulders is protective. I can see that being a vialbe ps when its warmer, but ast it get colder, I think both relaxed and natural ladies would benefit from some forom of ps that protects ya ends, especially with the colder weather coming.

Moisture--------nourish and moisturize the scalp. Be sure to use oil as a moisture locker not a moisturizer itself. for example, I run water over my hands, then run my hands through my hair until it is about 20% wet. then I apply the oil.

ITA! Oil is not a moisturizer (IMO), but its a great sealant and product to enhance ya DC experience. I always use some form of condish as my leave in and seal with oil or grease. Moisturized hair for days!

Again very true advice! Mosrt of us tend to not get all our needed daily supplements through our diet. I often use my Hair, Skin, and Nail Vitamins during o water my hair daily as a substitute.my Summer and Fall growth spurts bc they enhance my usual growth spurt. I have a pretty decent diet which is laoded with protein rich foods and I luv the Bolthouse drinks with the protein and why and many of their fruit brands. Although they are high in sugar, I only get them when they are on sale, so I'm not drinking them all the time. The bane of my exisiting is drinking water, but I try to water my hair daily by misting or dampening my hair daily and/or every other day to give her some water.

Exercise---------that is how the blood circulates better

I'm a slacker on hardcore exercise. I consider chasing and playing with the son and Hubby, parking further from work, taking the steps(if the elevator isn't working), etc my exercise. I really need to get back to walking around the resevoir and riding our bikes. EXERCISE is very beneficial to the hair and entire body!

Deep condition at least every 2 weeks------but not too much protein. I have yet to find an already made conditioner, so i might try the coconut oil, coconut milk, and yogurt trick one day.

Here I have a different spin on DC'ing. I haven't donbe a traditional dc in years. Initially during my natural hhj and as a relaxed head, I was a fan of cholesterols mixed with olive oil. That traditional dc really got my hair in a good moiturized condition. Currently, I used Mane and Tail The Original Condish and Tresemme Moisture Rich overnight if my hair hair needs some protein I dc with the M and T and Tresemme for Moisture overnight treatment. Both are sealed with olive oil and I top it off with a plastci cap and t-shirt. I get the same effects as if  I traditionally dc'ed.

Pretty simple right? I followed these to the letter I know that there are more factors, but I think that these help out the best. I have been using the bun style for 1 year straight, and I have reached hip length of relaxed hair.
ITA with simplicity is best! I have a reggie that is pretty much solid. I may tweaks as needed based off how she feels or behaving. I really do KNOW my hair and listen to it. I have my staple products (rarely try new ones). Plus, since I'm happilly style challenged and lazy, my buns and spuffs and occsassional pliatouts heve been good to me. So, I stick  to what works and she's been good to me. I wholeheartedl practice and believe the KISS(weetie).

As my hair has gotten longer, I find myself amazed at different yet exciting things my natural hair does in regards to water, products, and styling and detangling. It's become SOOOO much easier to do. Well. depending on the sytlye and how long I have held off on washing and detangling, it can be very easy. I think that dealing with my hair in sections has truly benefited me in cutting down detangling and plaiting my hair up. I usually zone out on tv while detangling and plaiting her up, which helps me gage how long it usually takes me to do that. I think my total time when I have to wash and all that jazz is about and hour and 45 minutes- if I'm planning on a plait out. But, if I'm gonna bun, I say the entire process takes about 35-45 minutes.

Now, I have experience  a new phenomenon when detangling and washing my hair in sections. I have to take the those plastic hair clips and secure each section after detangling and washing because the hair will continually fall in my face or get wrapped  into the hair that is sectioned off(even though I plait each section after detangling), but I'm not working on. I lol'ed bc I had to get out of the shower or out of my chair to get the clips to keep the hair in its respective section.
Its funny the different procedures and tolls that you have had on hand for awhile, but ya didn't need them initially has now become a necessay tool in the reggie.

Ooh, cool topic Luv!! Official BSLer here! *applause* Been fighting to have that title for the past year.....

I gotta agree with the simplicity is best. I've become a bit of an avid protective styler this here out of pure laziness. lol But, it's done more than given me great length retention, it's helped my hair thicken overall especially at the ends and it just looks so much lustrous when I do opt to wear it out.

WATER!!!! Nelly LOOOOOOOVES her some cool water!! I find that since I've started using water as a moisturizer and not trying to find and buy up products that ssay they moisturie, my hair thrives so much better. It coils up and it grows alot more.

Twists have truly been my best friend this past year. They're not for everyone, but they're so easy to do, look great, and can last for a minute if you take care of it right.

I can't really speak on the DC thing cause I'm with Luv, I just can't seem to keep up with the "traditional" DC these days. If you call letting conditioner steam in my hair while I perform showerly rituals, then sure, I deep condition all the time!

I think I can also attribute getting over the BSB-BSL hump with wet bunning and generally lots of wetting. Water has definitely been my best growth aid. I'm also growing into finger detangling. Though I still use a comb every now and again, these days I'm normally just pulling through with my fingers but I shed around the same amount of hair, so I don't know if it helps.....

I'M SOOOO EXCITED TO BE BSL YOU ALL!!!! Next stop, MBL!!! ........ I've never said that in my life. My hair has never gone past my neck at all! It's gonna be awesome to hit WL and then HL and then CL stretched!! But whoooo....do I really want all that hair? lol We shall see!

^^^Yeah, Mz K came through!!  You know I have been checking ya progress and drollling over those lush twists of yours! Congrats on BSL, hun!
It's someting magical about wet bunning when ya find yaself in a slump/purgatory. When I was helluva frustrated with that APL- BSL hump, wet bunning pushed me over to full BSL. I really think having your ends constanly moisturized and protected truly makes the difference in moving on an upward!

Hello I am natural (with the exception of my bang that has about 7 inches of relaxed hair).
I go by inches, but the last I checked my longer layer was 18 inches.
I am 3 to 4 inches from WL.
These last 2 years I have worked my hair loose more than anytime in my life, and my hair seems to love the extra attention.
What works for my hair: Oiling my hair with natural oils daily, washing my hair frequently, GHE and keeping it strong with protein treatments. These things will grow anyone hair.
My biggest victory is not having to wash my hair in twist, and detangling my hair in less than 30 minutes. These two victories have made me very happy. The better condition your hair is in the less tangles you will have to deal with. I use to believe that tangles was just a part of having coily hair. I no longer believe this. My coils only want to join together when they have no strength being single. Once they are moisturized and strong they can stand on their ownSmile.  Washing my hair in twist was using to much water and taking the joy out of my hair washing routines. Today I no longer have to do this.

Forgot to mention ACV rinses a must, a must for coily hair.

I am BSL (pushing MBL), but I recently had a HUGE setback (lost clumps of hair) and so to me, I think my hair isn't worthy of being in this thread.
Feels too thinned out to be called a veteran or something. :(

VEE, I agree that as my hair has gotten longer, its waay more easier to detanggle and I loose less shed hair too. I have also found that
once thee moistute balance is on check, u can focus on other txts for the hair. Yy for ya tesponse. Oh and i must toot Mane and Tail Detangler melts my tangles away

Embarrassed^
Oki Oki, I post :)

What probably went wrong was a combination of things. Most likely, I left the weave in too long and accumulated massive amounts of shed hair..
That in addition to the fact that when I undid the braids, I had to put it up in a ponytail, and that makes the knots even worse. My third mistake was not detangling dry. I believed that it would do more damage than good, so I soaked everything in oil and shampoo (sulfate shampoo, of all things Angry) and tried to detangle in sections. -.-
By then, I had already made too many mistakes. My whole head began to knot, and my finger detangling process was too slow to save it.
once I tried detangling the ends, the knots would travel to my roots, until I just got frustrated and went in with my denman and ripping ends.
I got a calmer rhythm going once that stopped working (or rather, never started), and used my fingers again, but by then, clumps of knots and shed hair were coming out.
Once it was done, I was shaking and damn near crying.
It felt like all my hard work was just gone. I didn't even think I was still BSL.
Now I know I am, but I don't know for how long.
I can see my roots growing in, and I can see how thin the rest of my hair has gotten. As to whether it's noticeable, I'm not the best judge.
My self perception is exaggerated to almost bald.. but I know that's not true.
So what I plan to do is reach my goal length and begin cutting back to thicken.
Cut it back, let it grow, cut it back.
I hope this won't take another three years, but knowing my growth, it most likely will.
I'll begin to invest heavily in growth aids and start applying more often to sort of speed up this process.
Also, since I'm now scared of weaves, I may just invest in another style.
Maybe mini twists for awhile, I don't know.
I just know that I'm frustrated, but eager because I know my journey is not done. I will have a new outcome and get to start over, and that sounds daunting but fun.
Chances are, my journey with BHM won't be over anytime soon.

Hi LUV! I reached BSL at the end of last year and have been protective styling for most of this year. I should be approaching WL by DEC if I don't have any set backs. I just wear braid extensions or I flatiron, that's about it. I'm considering blowdrying only but I'm not sure yet. I have also been considering not growing my hair anymore and just cutting it frequently I think WL is enough hair for me. We'll see hopefully I'll get there this year.

ps. Would love to see some new pics LUV!!

Aww, Nay! I think ya assessment of the take down with the saturation of ya entire head was correct. I remember reading either on here or LHCF that generously misting or detangling gently on dry hair with a small toothed comb, although labourious, seemed to help. Good news ya still Bra Strap Length! It sounds like you need to focus on your ends and overall re conditioningof ya strands. Are they naturally thin or was it the take down process that caused the ends to thin out?

I only ask bc maybe u won't have to cut at all if you do ya moisture and ps like crazy with amucho focus on those ends. I know a lot of folk like the kinky twists as a ps but I am concerned about being able to really moisturize and baby those ends. But, you have a good understanding of ya hair, do I know you'll be Mid Back really soon! GOOD LUCK, GIRL AND KEEP US POSTED!

HEY FASHIONISTA!!! So GOOD to hear from you! Look at you all growing!
Well, I know ya know that many folk do well with moderate and low to medium blowdrying especially during the colder months to keep the single strand knots away. So, hey why not?

I totally feel you on maintaining ya hair at Waist. I think for folk who may wear their hair straight , style their hair easier while straight as a natural , or who have a lot of hair or tightly coiled natural hair tend to decide to maintain their hair at a reasonable length for them. See, I have major shrinkage, rarely wear my hair straight, so I'm just gonna let Cleo do what she does. Now, I will say that her thickness could be a deciding factor about maintaining her at a certain length, but for real- not really - LOL!!

Since I'm not doing my annual straightening this yr, I have no straight hair pics, but I have some plaitout and ps pics. I'll post a few. So happy for all your growth.

I have always been a self proclaimed lazy, style challenged, lover of healthy hair, specifically long hair- all my life. I've always had thick healthy hair(well, not while preggo with my boy- thus my transition to natural) as a relaxed and natural. Mommy and Auntie tok good care of my hair as a kid(no perm til I begged for one @ 12, good hair practices, etc).

I realized that its not just the LENGTH of my hair that makes being lazy an effective tool in my arsenal, but the HEALTH of my hair also plays a huge role too. Early on in my HHJ, I did much more to Cleo and spent more time on her bc I needed to learn what REALLY worked and what didn't. I didn't jump on bandwagons, gave products a good amount of play before deciding it didn't work, pay attention to if the product indeed didwhat it was created to do, researching heavily, and nixing processes that were no longer needed and introducing others.

I believe that once your hair gets healthy and you know what needs to be done to keep it healthy, most reggies will become and/or stay really simple bc your no longer trying to get to know ya hair bc you now KNOW your hair.

Yestetday I had my hair in a semi- low bun. I came home early from work bc I was zombie tired! So, I just hopped in the bed with Hubby( he works overnights). Depending on the position, Hubby's arm may fall on top or around my head. I rarely sleep with my head covered. So, we napped for a good while- both of us changing positions in our sleep.

When, I awakened, I kept feeling something in my mouth. So, yeah, I'm blowing wind outta my mouth to get it out. Come to find out, its my darn hair strands escaping from the bum landing in my mouth! I only experience this with plaitouts and straight hair. So, I never thought that a little displaced hair from a nap would end up in my freaking mouth.

Today, I had a BIG top knot or ballerina bun as my style. Cleo initially didn't cooperate, but she eventually did. I looked @ her and said- Girl, u look huge and oh so cute! I got alot of compliments. My Hubby saw me when I came home and he said that my bun looked fake bc it sat perfectly on top of my head in a perfect circle.   I lol'ed bc I was thinking the same thing, but with a twist. If someone was really to inspect my bun, they could tell it was my hair based off the way the hair twirled about to make the bun. But, to the untrained eye, it looks like a fake bss doughnut bun. I smiled inside even though it irks me that folk assume that most BW hace fake hair.

Oooh, Naynay that's so pretty!! :)

Wait, did I just get fussed out and thumbs down?Cry

I don't feel like a long-haired vet, yet, but what I've learned on my way there (Waist-Hip length) is:

-Water is my best moisturizer
-Seal in my moisture
-Use low manipulation styles 95% of the time
-Stay on top of my moisture-protein balance
-Protect my hair from the harsh MI winters
-Patience!  I never felt like my hair was growing until I looked back at pictures.

Lastly
-Ayurveda, ayurveda, ayurveda -- MUST be incorporated into my routine

Check this out ladies:

I started using ayurveda powders after meeting up with another BHM natural who said that she uses a shikakai shampoo.  Since I had ayurveda powders around, I decided to just start adding them to my poo and condish, using those things like I normally do.

I started incorporating them in Jan 2010.  Here's my hair 01 Feb 2010:

And here's my hair just 4 MONTHS LATER in 10 June 2010:

Same area and same amount of hair.  Soo much thicker/healthier!!

And here it is again in November 2010, 10 months into the game and 9 months from the first picture:

These powders will forever be in my regi!  From pastes to glosses to teas, they will be used in my regi!

Oh, the power of shrinkage! I have had a love/hate relationship with it on different points if my hhj. Now, I'm currently @ a contented stage with it, especially since I don't straighten often.

One day @ work, I was absentmindely pulling a hair that had escaped from my bun while talking on the phone. One of my co-workers came into my office and said- Dang, I knew ya hair was long, but not that long! I lol'ed and told her that my hair shrinks alot.

Ladies, come on in a share ya experiences, ya daydreams, etc! BUMP!

Hey Ladies! Just wanna share a bun story. Buns are my ps of choice. I know some folk think they are boring, but they have become my signature.

Well, as my hair has gotten longer, the bun has seriously MORPHED! I remember looking at Yt vids of various bun styles and trying to duplicate. Epic fail! But, now (w/o even trying) Cleo effortlessly looks fuller and more intricate! I may do an Evolution of the Bunned Cleo spread- lol!

Oh! I almost forgot to add that The Hubby is really digging my BIG bun too! I wear specs and he now calls me his Sexy Librarian. Role playing w/o needing to buy a costume... PRICELESS

Awww Luv. I gotta get in on the Bun Action...Ha haa and YES! DO come back with a Bun Evolution THREAD!!!! *inner stalker-err admirer emerging*

Man, now I know exactly why I never liked adding extensions to my own hair. Ever since those genie locs, I've been feeling like MY hair isn't enough. Suddenly it's not long enough, it's not thick enough, I have a problem with everything and the only way to resolve that seems to be going into another extension style. But, on the other hand I've been digging my hair like crazy. I've been letting it shrink and swell up and really been able to study my coils and how it shrinks and dries and it's been really cool. I don't have this obsessive need to keep stretching it every time I get out the shower. I finally reached a point where my hair can do what it do and I'll be just fine with it. Cause shrinkage used to send me into a mental coma. Jus sayin.

But as my hair gets longer, the more I have to deal with. MORE tangles and MORE knotting and MORE end maintenance and MORE moisture and MORE this and that. I have a pretty simple regimen of doing nothing to it (well not NOTHING nothing but ya'll know what I MEAN!!! ) and it's growing but I don't think my mind is ready for it. Somedays when I'm outside being suffocated in the heat, I have every urge to just hack it off. Specially the front with it hanging out in the wind looking all wimpy. Thinking about doing a Deva Cut or something for the front, it just looks ridiculous!

Okay, sorry about the ranting......I'm just having a true love/hate affair with Nelly. She's like that devilish little sister that I can't live without....MAN!

^^ Hey Ms. K!!! I soo understand the former 'shrinkage coma'. I used to hate my shrinkage, especially during the BSB stage. But, now we kindaof cool. Lol!

I feel you about the extensions. I haven't had extensions in many moons, but I can empathize with u in regards to not feeling like ya hair isnt long or thick enough. Last yr. When I got my annual straightening and trim, I was sooo disappointed that I was BSB. I was hoping for MBL. My hair looked thick, but looked soooo short. That's why I decided no annual trim and straightening til the New Year. I've had long and thick hair as a relaxed head, so BSB was not long to me on my head. Now, that I'm unofficially MBL, I will know my hair is long.

I have tangle issues too, but it depends on the style. But, I have less tangles now with longer hair thaan with shorter hair. Go figure.

Thanks for ranting, K!! U know I luv ya hair!!

Tanzi and K- Just for yall and because I love buns, and I need to take some pics(I'm HORRIBLE with taking pics) I will take a pic a day and try to style my hair in 7 different bun styles. Yall, Imma TRY!!

Tanzi, I just LUV bunning!! I think its one of the most EASIEST and ELEGANT PS's out there. I also think its GReaT for retention and the protection of my ends. I really don't dress my buns up though, which I wanna work on. But, I'm more interested in how it morphs. Its funny to see that if I wrap the rubberband once, I'll get a big juicy bun. If I wrap it twice, I get a medium and contained bun. So, its interesting wearing buns- be them- high knot/ ballerina or a low sexy bun.

My entire 8 yr hhj has contained consistent bunning. Yes, indeedy, I got (and still do) get bored with bunning. But, I do tryout different styles. But, I'm lazy and style challenged, so I always return to bunning
Plus, I know the bun is AWESOME for Cleo. I could truly keep her bunned for the entire week, but she would be tangle city if I didnt take her down on Wed and detangle and mousturize. I think she's getting trained to goin a bun bc she hardly resists me anymore! Lol!

What is BSB? Below shoulder blade?

Hello Ladies,
I am a long time lurker of several years now and I wanted to share my reggie and progress.
I recently achieved MBL and I plan to continue growing my hair until it can't grow any more Embarrassed
My reggi is simple... well at least I think so. Here goes:

Lately, like within the last 6 months or so, I have been washing and conditioning my hair once a month. Just recently, I started using Wen and I like it. Before Wen, I using ApHogee Moisture Shampoo and conditioner and I clarified with Nothing But Shampoo or Kinky Curly Come Clean. I generally use 2 different shampoos: clarifier and moisture based.

I mostly finger detangle; however, I do use a comb once a month or so to remove any shed hairs.

Every 6 weeks or so, I use ApHogee 2 Step Protein Treatment. Now that I think about, I am about due for another treatment Yep This is the only time I apply heat to my hair.

I don't really trim my hair even because I don't wear it straight. However, I do S&D the very ends of my hair only after I have treated them with protein and moisture and they still feel tangly, rough and/or split.

I don't wear my hair out much I pretty much style my hair in twists. I wear it out sometimes though, like now. I have had the same W&G since last week. For me, this is a real treat Lol I don't use alot of styling aids. I rarely apply heat. Wearing my hair in twists keeps it stretched and makes finger detangling possible.

That's pretty much it... Yep

Here is my lastest progress: I wanted to post a pic within but it didn't give me the option. However, here is the link:   http://www.naturalhaircommunity.com/middle-back-length - http://www.naturalhaircommunity.com/middle-back-length

Hey Jael! Thanks for posting ya beautiful hair and reggie!! I LUVED reading ya MBL blog entry! Ya awe factor reminded me of my Unoffical MBL check! I only call it unoffical bc I have only stretched pieces and not fully straightened hair. I too was in awe and bliss when I pulled that piece of hair and it just kept going and going!! Its just a sweet feeling of accomplishment, especially when you expected last yr and didn't get there!

I also applause your 1x monthly washing and limited trimming and 100% ps'ing. My reggie consists of these three steps as well. Most folk ewww at the thought of monthly washing. But, for my hair, its awesone. I don't sweat at all in my hair. I water my hair daily. I use minimal product so I dont have a ton of build up either. There are two products in my arsenal that makes my hair stink- so I wash more often when using those products. But, for the most part, I wash 1x monthly.

In regards to trimming, I trim 1-2xs per year. That's it. My reasoning behind this schedule is: I rarely wear my hair straight, so a neat hemline is not my concern. I also have natural layers, so trying to even up my hair is a moot point. Lastly, my hair is in a bun 95% of the time, so my ends are rarely exposed.

Everyone's hair is different, so you have to do what works for ya head of hair!

Oh, I tested out a different bun yesterday. I kindaof like it. I usually do sleek buns bc of my workplace dress cide. But, on my off days, my buns are rather free form- minimal product. If I wanna wear this bun fir wirk, I have to apply some product and scarf her down. I'll tweak and see how it turns out.

^ thanks love for being willing to inspire me with you're buns. I've been wearing my hair in twist outs mainly, but I really want to protect my ends by bunning. My hair is just below APL, but I get a ton of shrinkage. Plus, it seems like this is where my hair gets stuck in terms of growth. I think bunning will help with length retention. Also, I live in Milwaukee and as winter approaches I need something to protect my ends from my hats, wool coats, and sweaters.

JAEL!!!!! Gorgeous hair girl!! It's so thick and beautiful!! Makes me wanna go on a 100% protective styling mission as well! I stared at the pic for a good minute...

Thanks Luv!!!! I can't wait for that bunning thread to come!!! I gotta say, it does feel weird posting in this thread claiming to be a "long haired vet". Seems like just yesterday I was trying to pull that one hair pass my collarbone to say i was "scraping" APL. Wow. And I'm totally trying to find the time to do those braid extensions to my hair. But as of lately here's what's been going down with Nelly.

I'm starting back on my workout routines, so I'm pretty much water rinsing or co-washing everyday. I'm pulling a Luv/Cleo routine. WET BUNNING! lol It's so simple and easy to scarf and call it a style. And Nelly can't argue with all the extra moisture she's getting either. I usually just water rinse, then coat the ends really good with conditioner then slather a bit on the roots, pull it back into a ponytail and bobby pin the ends in. Tie a scarf over it and call it a day. I use that LA Gel which for some reason leaves my hair feeling greasy...like shea butter is on it. So I stopped using that and just opt for the conditioner and the scarf only. I'll be bunning up til I find the time to do those doggone extensions. But until then, I'm not complaining and neither is nelly. Plus I'm eating better and drinking lots of water, so it'll be nice to see how all of me looks by the end of the year. We shall see!

Tanzi, I can attest that bunning (and my Hair, Skin, and Nail Vits) got me over the APL- BSB hump. I was stuck for a good while too. It was one of my WORST length humps to get over. I will say: 1. Make sure to change the position of ya bun, 2. If you're prone to tangles, take the bun down midweek and detangle, 3. If you're not wet bunning, make sure to moisturize and seal those ends. You should be good to go!! GL and report back, hun!

Aww, GC, thanks girl!  And look at that hair!!

Well instead of a separate ayurveda cleanser and condish, I decided to combine them.  My hair seems to like it and I enjoy cutting the process down a bit.  I'm currently in twists, which I hardly ever rock, and I'm trying to find a flattering style to rock w/o a darn headband.  Today, I did my first banana clip bun and it turned out okay.  I'm gonna try it as a high bun tomorrow for casual day at work.

WHAT THE FREAK IS WRONG WITH BHM!!!!? I've posted this thing like a gazillion times already! but anyways....

Wow, thanks for that GC! I'm all i-blushin! lol

So I've just washed my hair with shampoo. I haven't used shampoo in MONTHS!! Not since I got my terressentials which was like....months ago. Lately I do lots of co-washing and monthly mud washes and my hair stays soft. I used suave's shea butter and almond shampoo that I kept hidden away in a box and it totally left my hair feeling stripped clean. A clean that I did NOT miss. I guess Nelly and Terressentials have run off and gotten married or something, cause she was just NOT feeling it. Even after trying to co-wash it with my tresemme conditioner it STILL felt stripped!

So as of now, I'm torn between wearing it big and fluffy in a blowout and wearing it how I want to, or going into protective styles until the end of the year......I know I shouldn't put anymore heat on my hair cause I just did a blowout but I'm kinda itching to pull that blowdryer out right now.....I don't know. i feel bored with my styling and though my hair is growing to great lengths, here I go again with a slight intention of messing it all up!

Okay, you know what. Tomorrow, I'm going to get that kanekalon hair and put in some braid extensions. I'm so over this...

UPDATE!!!! Just thought I should let you ladies know that I FINALLY got my braids in. They're Pocahontas long! I feel like singing Disney music. They took about 9 hours to do and I used synthetic weave (the cheapest one at $.39 a pack!) and it took like 8 and a half packs (so 9 in all) to do. I actually got really lazy toward the back and made them bigger but I don't think you can tell. I compensated the less amount of parts with more hair on each part so I think it played out nicely. Plan on keeping these in for at least majority of October. We shall see.

I've been getting SO MANY compliments on these braids and a few people have even asked if I could do their hair.....I don't really do people's hair so I'm kinda nervous. But hey, I can get over it for some extra change. lol

K, I LUV those braids!! I wanna sing 'The Colors of the Wind'! I'm glad you decided to give Nelly some protection. The braid is sooo elegant! I'm feening for a pretty fishtail braid, so ya braid is giving me LIFE!

Ladies, I have tried twice to get BHM to post the bun pics and get error msgs! Arrgh! But, I will not be defeated. I will post those pics!

This week I'm rocking a plaitout. I fell asleep with a half plaited head on Sun, so I rocked my handy tam on Mon to work and finished them after work. Of course, it rained heavy today, but Cleo still rocked! Luv it!

The Fall just makes me feen for the straight hair, but I am trying my best to hold out until New Year's. I will not give in!!

@mskraizy, love, love those braids!

@nay, force yourself to change your hair style at least every 2 days while you have the crochet braids in.  maybe the variety will take your mind off your own hair!

Nay, those crochet braids are cuuuuute!
Now, I have to pop ya hand- I'll take it back if u don't live in an area that has a harsh wunter. Ok, here goes. FALL IS UPON US! PS'ing (for many) is BENEFICIAL during the colder months.

I heard on the news that the cold snap for me will begin Sunday. Before, Ii heard that I was contemplating how to style my hair next week (after wearing a plaitout this week). Well, cold weather a'comibg... Cleo is getting bunned up, hidden, something to protect her. I'mma make sure to go back to my Coconut gtease for sealing my hair and ends too. In the Fall/Winter, I use heavier sealing produts rather than lighter oils.

Nay, u have the same goal as me (and some of the other gals) WL by Dec (me- Dec/Jan). Our ends are the oldest part of our hair, we gotta protect them. Just my .02 cents.

Aww thanks ladies!

A Luv, you gave me such a flashback. I loved that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkV-of_eN2w" rel="nofollow - song !! "Can you paint with all the colors of the wiiiiiindddd!!!!!". I was seriously feeling like that today while it was blowing like crazy.

@Naynay, those braids are cute! But why don't you try accessorizing? Clips have become a favorite go to for me, and then you can always dress a bun up with chopsticks. Maybe a cute scarf or a flower one day. I love accessories, they save me in a world of hurt. Jump on it girl, it don't cost but one dolla!

I dunno Luv and GC, I don't really have too big of an itch to straighten. I always say I'm gonna do at the end of every year and I NEVER do. Perhaps I'll actually do it this year, but ya'll don't hold me to it. But I did say I always wanted to make BSL before I straightened so maybe this time I'll actually follow through. lol

Still in these braids and they're already fuzzing. THAT'S why I didn't miss weaves. But I still like them though, they don't feel all that heavy and I'm still getting compliments left and right. These may not last for a month like I was hoping, but it's been a good week so far. I haven't oiled or co-washed at all but I'm gonna get started back on it tonight! Imma try to keep up with it. It's just so easy to forget I have all that hair underneath these braids. It's deceitful!!

@Nay- Awww, Snookums wanna wear that mane loose! I feel u! As much as I'm feening for Ms. Cleo to be straifht, I'm SURE( well I keep saying- 'Hold on, Luv. U can make it til the New Year'. But, its HAAAARD!!! I REALLY wanna straighten for my 35th next month! Ooooh, I just decided! I am gonna straighten for my bday and get my trim. I mean its my 35th bday- a milestone- so I'm gonna celebrate in every way I WANT TO!

OK, now that that is decided, I can get back to yall- lol! I had to talk it out online to cement that decision.

GC, TELL NIKE AGAIN, PLEASE! She playing like she don't know she is one of the main ladies that give THE MOST DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS on her techniques and tricks! She betta act like she knows! Lol!

K, When I wore extension braids and the fuzz started rearing her head, I would spray the fuzzies with water, take some clear gel and run down length of braid and bonnet. If it was a fuzzy hairline, I would do the same but scarf it. Fuzzies behaved. Just a thought.

I always look forward to my annual straightening, K bc I don't straighten at all during the real hot or real cold months. But, Spring and Fall is perfect for me. I think my desire to hold out comes from me wanting to be FULL WL, so I don't loose too much length when my stylist trims. But, I'm being realistic now. I definitely need a trim and I most likely will not loose alot when she does. Plus, I'm really thinking that even with the trim, I'll either still be WSL or close, so I'll be FULL WL the first 6 mos. Of the NY ( if not earlier, but stil in 2013)

So, I've decided to get my trim and straightening done for my bday and use the the 1st 1/2 of the NY to get to full WL and let Cleo do what she do.

Now, yall know I have been enjoying my fluffy , blowing in the wind plaitout, but I am NOT feeling the detangling session this weekend. It 's not really long(45 mins)- I just have more tangles after a plaitout. I pulled a few strands @ work today and thought- 'Arrgh, detangling is gonna be fun(insert sarcasm)'. But, it was worth it for a few days of easy free hair.

Hey Ladies! I told yall I was not gonna be defeated by BHM's error message and posting these bun pics. I don't think a seperate thread is needed, so I'll incorporate them into this one. I am apologizing in advance for the size bc I am lazy when it comes to re-sizing. Most of the times when I take the extra time to re-size, BHM gives me the error message, SO HERE GOES!

Here's Cleo in the beginning of my Love Affair with Buns. I couldn't successfully get her bunned by twisting her around, so I would make a ponytail and plait and then secure with bobby pins:

Here she is in Dec 2010. I was able to twist her and secure with a rubberband. I added a lil hair candy to her:

Here she is during the PS Challenge 11-12. She was at BSL. I LUVED the BIGNESS OF HER!!!

Here's another PS Challenge Pic. I think this was a wet bun bc she looks smaller. The headband is courtsey of my Auntie, who made it! Thanks Auntie!

Here she is in my beloved Princess Leah buns (these are wet buns too and a lil lopsided-LOL). I also look drunk, but I blinked as I snapped the pic. LOL!

Here's another PS pic and headband courtsey of my Auntie:

Here's Cleo in my LUVED Ballerina Bun/Top Knot Bun!

Here's another Princess Leah pic! I look so Innocent and Sweet! LOL!

Although the bun is cut off, this is one of my fav pics of me from this Summer! I stayed in a top knot with some big hoops on the weekends!

Here she is a few weeks ago. She's all swole and stuff! I luved it!

Here's another from a few weeks ago. Oh so preppy, Cleo! LOL!

Last,  but not least, Cleo ON SWOLE FO' REAL! Well contained swole bc I was at work:

HOPE YALL ENJOYED!!!

Have a great day, Ladies. Be back later to share some convos I had about hair the past few days.

Its sooo refreshing to have some gals to talk hair with irl! I know it plated a factor in me creating this thread. I have nor don't pretend or say I know all there is to know about natural hair. But, I know my girl and speak about her when genuinely asked. Lately, I was getting asked...genuinely...alot. It eas weird bc I do this hair thing for me, but I luvs to help when asked. But, I admit, its somewhat flattering that people ask advice and admire. But, its somewhat uncomfortable bc some ladies are just...EXTRA.

*spits out tea...*LUV!!!!!!!!!! Those buns are GORGEOUS!!! Cleo know she be looking so good and she's gotten soooo big! I'm BOUT to get back on my wet bunning game but I'll see. Do you still wet bun in cooler months? If so how do you go about doing that?

I like talking about hair too, maybe even a little too much. lol But my only problem is having that one person on the sideline who think they know more about your hair than you do. I hate when I have someone come and ask me what I do to make my hair so pretty and someone else barges in trying to give the rundown of their regimen. It's like Ms if it was YOUR hair she was admiring, I'm sure she would've asked you....

And I've been sooooooo lazy while having these braids in my hair. For the past almost two weeks I have done NOTHING with Nelly, not even spritz her with water let alone oil it daily. I just haven't felt like doing ANYTHING to my hair and it's fuzzy and everything. I did water and oil it yesterday, gonna try and get to it tonight and keep it ongoing. I thought I could get 4 weeks out of this....it might be shortened. lol

Annnnd I'm actually really shocked that I may be able to claim MBL by the end of the year. I don't know, I'm gonna keep on trying to ps for the rest of the year. I dub MBL as about an inch under my bra strap and right now I'm in the middle of my bra strap....I think. I think wet bunning will help carry me to the end. I got some more cute headbands and will be investing in more. That should help me through to the end of the year. Can't wait to do end of the year length checks and comparisons cause I just KNOW Nelly has come along way this year as opposed to last year where she barely budged....

^^Lol, K! Cleo and I apologize for making u spit out ya tea! But, we thank ya kindly for noticing our efforts. Girl, we sure do wet bun in the cooler months just a modified 'wetness' (yall be good w/ ya thoughts- lol).

I usually do a overnight 'deep conditioning'(its in quotes bc I don't do traditional dc's anymore), detangle, cowash, m & s, bun and scarf on the weekends. That's the only time my hair is saturated. Durung the week, I use my spray bottle and mist Cleo, m&s, bun and scarf on my way to work with the heat on. By the time I hit the parking lot, the outer parts of my hair are mostly dry, but the inner part is wet all day, which I like bc my ends are constantly wet, but protected bc of the bun. Its usually wet when (or if) I take her down after work. So, yes indeed, wet bunning can be done in colder weather.

I'm glad that I have you ladies to REALLY talk to and share hair stuff with bc yall get the IT ALL. The few ladies irl that I taalk to do to a point. The extra ones make my eyes glaze over and my ears shut down when they start rambling nonsense.

K, I BELIEVE Nelly is gonna show out at the EOTY! I hope you can keep ya braids in a lil longer for the sake of ya po' arms and fingahs! Lol!

I was reading through some threads in the Natural section and some of the ladies were talking bout banding. I haven't banded my Cleo in awhile, so I think I will. I'll prolly do 3 ponies. 2 on the sides and 1 in the back. Then, pin the 2 in the front on topof my head. We shall see.

Oh yeah, my coworker/amiga went to a fitness center grand opening and she got a goody bag. She gave me a nice amount of different Organics samples and an olive oil infused wrap!

I finished my detangling and banding of Cleo. I just misted each section with watet, added Mixed Chicks Leave-in, put canola oil on the length, and sealed my ends with grease
So, she should be dry in the am. Now I gotta figure out what to do with het when I take them out.
Here's a pic. Its huge- sowwy.

My bro says I should wear my hair outside like this. Our Momma said- Ummm.. no. Lol! I would if I had black rubberbands in. Lol!

^^^Nay, I feel you. I know my ends need a trim and the ssk's are back with a vengence. So, I'm glad I decide to- 1. Incorporate banding my hair at least every other night. But, I need to practice putting all of this big hair in an acceptable bun for work (I'm gonna ROCK her big with a suede newsboy cap tomorrow though), 2. I will be focusing on m & heavily sealing my ends every other night , and 3. Deciding to get my hair straughtened, trimmed and styled in a braided updo next month will help me go into the NY with a fresh hemline. I think even with the trim, I'll be on the move to WL. I'm also glad that I'm being more realistic with attainung WL. I know I'll be there sometime in 2013- so I'm good!

Ty kindly Tan and Swifty! I luv the fluff! I sho do, but my hand on the Bible- she is overwhelming. I am now sitting with her in a half up, half down style contemplating medium blowdry. Ladies, I need to do something! Since I suck at catching my hair at the roots when I plait, plus the fact I have a looser texture in the front and sides, my roots and inner hair is TRES wavy. So, my hair is big, fluffy, and partial hangtime.

So, I'm thinking a med. Blowdry with the comb attachment will help me get a more sleeker looking bun. I wasn't feeling the stuffed hair look. My hat is made for sleeker hair(natural/ relaxed). Once I finish the night routine with the boychild and get the Hubby up for work, I'll get to work on Cleo. Yall, I'm a lil nervous and excited bc its been a yr since I've seen Cleo's REAL length and with the work I put in, I SO DON'T want to be disappointed!

NAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now you KNOW that mane is GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG, and LUUUUV!!!!I love your big fluffy hair and yes, that third pic is giving me life too!!!!!

Gawd, why ya'll gotta do this now!? Making me come close to ripping out these braids cause they already fuzzy as heck! And now all this beautiful hair is poppin up, ya'll.....ya'll a trip. That's jacked up man.

@Bella, totally! Nelly is like my best friend.....sorta....maybe. lol Hair with an attitude HAS to have a name! Nelly has always been a favorite name of mine, it's like tomboyish girly to me and that's how Nelly is. Like a simplistic, casual fro with a straight up attitude come wash day! lol

@Luv, thanks for your tips!! I'm thinking about doing wet bunning cause I have been slacking on moisturizing with water first lately.....well, moisturizing in general. But I've been busy with work and getting ready for school, I don't really think that much about Nelly these days. She'll be aight. She's a tough one though.

I must admit though, I think I may wanna try crochet braids though. My only thing is wearing cornrows for more than three days. I was never a cornrow-wearer so I never really learned how to maintain them and keep them neat for more than a week. And I don't know why but my hair just always fuzzes up at every oppurtunity POSSIBLE. No matter how much I do to prevent it, the next day it's fuzzy and the edges are busting through. Lately I just learn to deal with it, I guess it's just apart of my hair. But if I do someone else's hair they can make it last for MONTHS! I'm tellin ya'll, Nelly is a trip. And besides that, I do alot of watering and oiling it so that has to help with the fuzziness. But my edges are beginning to get a little unruly these days. I've never known my edges to be so THICK. I wonder what I'm doing for all this hair to be jumping out all of a sudden......oh I know.

Nothin.

But yeah, I'm thinking about doing crochet braids, can you wash crochet braids? What's the upkeep like to whoever wears them?

Haaaa, seriously enjoying all the hair candy ladies!! I may not post any pics of Nelly until the end of the year. Just for a surprise to me AND you!

Ms Kraizy thats how i was feeling seeing all these loose manes and couldn't see/feel/dc mine. hence the take down of two sets of crochet braids in 1 month both bearly making it to two weeks.

but my crochet brais were loose sythetic hair. so yea no washing for me. but im guessing if its the pre braided hair it should be ok to wash lightly.
