 Hey everyone,

I want to start a Waist Length Challenge for those just starting out in the summer, since alot of the older ones have already began and are near completion. So this is a challenge for those who need support in taking on a year long challenge. Despite popular belief black hair can maintain extensive growth however one must care for it properly, eat right and maintain a healthy lifestyle!

Registration begins:

* * * NOW - AUG, 1 2012! * * *

Sign Up By AUG 1ST 2012:

 - post your starting photo here or to to http://photobucket.com/wlhairchallenge2013

NB ---> This photobucket makes one big album instead of having to go to individual fotiki links so thats why we choose this method instead, so everyone's photos are all in one place and makes for better organization. ;)

 - post your starting length, expected WL date
 - post your current hair state (relaxed/transitioning/natural) - If relaxed, incl last perm date.
 - 3 short term goals (could be milestones, bad habit breaking, )
 - post your **DETAILED** regimen (all vitamins, supplements, oils and growth aids)

 --- THE RULES ---
  1. Protective styling 75 to 100% of the week
  2. Deep condition (min 1 hour) at least once a week.

ConfusedDeadCry YOU MUST KEEP UP WITH YOUR CHECK INS OR YOU WILL BE LEFT BEHIND!!! ConfusedDeadCry

Clap THIS ACTS AS MOTIVATION FOR EVERYONE AS WELL AS FOR YOUR PERSONAL PROGRESS!!! Clap

This forum unlike others will be a sisterhood, acting as a support system to achieve WL hair in a year. So we must stick to posting regularly to motivate each other. Therefore the posting rules will be heavily stressed. We understand that life happens and we might forget to post or two. However if a challenger has missed a month of posting you will be dropped.

Clap A challenge like this will take dedication, discipline and staying on top of your regimen! We are all here to support each other, so we must stick together ladies! Clap

So i'll be the first to post and document my journey to waist length hair here. I wanted to take this on, since after 6 months of neglecting my healthy hair and using moose since I loved rodding my hair. However I'd leave the stiff moose in for weeks at a time.

So after this pic (May 5th) I probably left the moose in for a good while, and dreaded looking at it. I was so busy with school and work that I never even had the time to put a comb through it. I still ate my fruits with oatmeal every morning, about a little over 16 oz of water a day but was not on it as rigorously as I was when I was disciplined about my hair and had great growth. I was also still taking my Biotin pills and mulivitamin pills missing a few days at a time.

It was after I went to the Dominican hair salon and had a wash and blow out I saw how healthy and well my hair had held up through my negligence so I VOWED right after leaving the salon with my new bouncy hair that I would never neglect her again and ensure I care for her, and went straight to the beauty supply store and got a ton of hair care products.

I've done my research and have also visited the health food store near me and got a slew of vitamins and oils. I've made my own concotions from the oils as well as the hair products into one bottle with a tappered tip, and makes for such an EASY, non messy application since nothing touches my hands.

I just started on my vitamin regumine yesterday which includes 11 separate capsules, and 6 separate oils. In addition I'll be doing a homemade deep condition treatment this weekend. I'm excited to see the results over the next few weeks and would enjoy the the support of 2 or 3 other girls to make this journey with together.

Oh cool!Thumbs Up
I did not see this challenge before, but I might be back with the starting info. before Aug (which is next month, lolLOL).
I tend to be off and on with posting on here sometimes.
I am wanting to get WL in 2013, but I'm not sure if I will get there in the 12 months I expect to (which would be average growth as well).
I think I'll just wait to see if someone makes a challenge at the EOTY in the main growth section.

I'm being lazy right now lol but I will be back to join this challenge, it seems fun. I am in the 2012 WL Challenge but I fell off and know I won't be WL by the end of this year so no more set backs and 2013 is my WL year.

That's the spirt AmberColour! I wanted to create a space where everyone was motivated by the growth of each other, as well as to share our techniques and keep each other in check! We'll all have slip ups here and there, however the point is to keep everyone in line and disciplined, because that's why we tend to fall off! Taking the time out to visit this thread at least twice a day keeps me going. I'll add you to the list but only the girls that have posted all their info after Aug 1st will remain love.

breBR3bre hurry back! We'll have your back!

Twist outs would be a low manipulation style or no heat. PS are anything that hides your ends.

Ladies I did a chop! I felt I needed more volume as my ends were stringy and weren't healthy. I'm not worried because it will grow back as long as I stick to my regimen.  I'll add photos in a few, but I have a question. How many ladies in here co-wash and if you do what do you use or think is the best conditioner to use? I've been seeing persons raving about Mixed Chicks Deep Conditioner and thinking about trying it.

Hey, I co-wash regularly (2-3 times a week). If I don't manage to co-wash at the end of the week my hair is really dry and tangled :(

I tried the mixed chicks DC when I first BC'd, it was good, but I didn't think it was that amazing for the price (it's quite expensive in the UK), but I didn't use it as a co-wash only as a DC. Now I just co-wash with tresemme naturals moisturising conditioner. I find that when I co-wash I don't need the heaviness of a DC, but that could just be me!! Let me know how you get on :D

Thanks alot love...yea it is expensive!...I just bought a bottle and it cost me US$50!...but yea hopefully it works because I want to wash my hair throughout the week...I DC every weekend so it will be interesting to see how this works!...

My Starting Info:

Photos: These pics were taken during my last take down. I'll do an update once I take down this current install.

My Short Term Goals:
1. Longest Layer MBL by Dec 2012
2. Full MBL by April 2013

I tried mixed chicks and they are ok. Certainly not enough BANG for the amount of BUCKS spent IMO. If you try it buy the smaller size before you waste $50 on the larger one. I've used conditioners just as good but way cheaper.

BHM never lets me upload pics straight from my computer. I always have to add the pics to photobucket and copy the link they give for the pic and paste it in the Image URL and by the third try it's done.

Referring to the co-wash post, Mane 'n Tail Conditioner is really great for a quick co wash at a decent price, plus you get a lot in one bottle. The consistency is creamy and moisturizes really well as far as I've used it. $8-10 in most places

Current length: about BSB (longest layer) - I expect to be WSL by Aug 2013, not full WSL C:

Natural, type "4" hair

Goals:
• get consistent with the GA
• eat more veggies/ less sweets
• faster, harder exercises
• more to come as time passes

My "Reggie":
I am almost always in twists/buns because I have attained the most growth retention with these styles.
Wash every ten days or so. I do not wash more than 4x a month. I DC every week. I baggy every night. It works for me and I do not have moisture overload.

The current growth aid I am using is a sulfur mix I made.

I take a daily vitamin and I am also taking a HSN vitamin. I think I will make the HSN vit a regular.

Commitments/Rules:
1 (I am almost always PSing),
2 (I DC weekly even if I do not plan on washing my hair the next day),
3** (my hair doesn't like a lot of protein, so I use it sparingly),
4 (I do this whenever, most of the time overnight before I wash my hair the next day),
(I usually go a few months without dusting/trimming, so the next time I do it will be at the end of the year),
6 & 7

Thank you. When I tried the paste method from photobucket the other day it didn't work - maybe I was far too frustrated after trying for so long. Thanks Hun.

Tresemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture Conditioner works very well. I used if for 8 months until I realised my hair can benefit from truly natural conditioners such as Cold Pressed Oils. It took a while for my hair to adjust, which was the hardest part when stopped using conditioner, and my hair was a little dry for about the first 4 months, but since then my hair feels great without the use of a Traditional Conditioner. Hello Ladies! I want to join this challenge! I need a team to achieve this goal!

Starting Length:   BSL (longest layer about 1 1/2" past)

Hair Status: hair has been natural since Aug 05' But it is very heat damaged so I have to be super careful with them.

Last Relaxer: Aug 05'

Expect to Achieve WL by: Aug 13'

My Short Term Goals:
1. Get Healthier Ends by cutting down on heat
2. Protective style more often
3. take supplements daily

Regimen:I don't really have a regimen. (shame, I know) I haven't gained any length in 4 years because of this. i wash and condition bi weekly but sometimes more often. I co-wash with Wen cleansing conditioner if I don't have too much product build up. I use Tresseme touchabley soft most of the time for regular washes. I rarely deep condition as it doesn't have much of an effect on my hair. I protective style with a glue-less full lace wig. My husband hates it so I don't wear it as much as I should.

the first pic is wet, 2nd Blown out, & the 3rd is flat ironed.

Goodgirl i luv Tumeric but find that it stains everything, ur moisturizer caught my attention...do u make it urself? Pls share!!

Posted By: GoodGirlGoneGr8
Date Posted: Jul 23 2012 at 9:36pm
You are sooooo right, it does stain EVERYTHING. I make it myself by melting some shea butter in my palms (about a quarter-sized amount) then sprinkling some turmeric (about 1/2 teaspoon) in my hands. I rub my hands together to mix and just smear it all over my face.

I end up looking like one of the simpsons when I'm done, but it's definitely worth it. This is, by far, the best facial/moisturizer I've ever used. I use it nightly and I sleep in it and my face looks so clear and refreshed after I rinse it in the morning. I'll post some pics when I do it tonight...

Here are some tips:
  • Use the off-white, raw shea butter
  • Turmeric stains nails too, so if you'd like you can use some non-latex gloves.
  • I use shea butter because I have dry/combination skin. If you have oily skin, use milk instead of shea butter. Just mix it in a clean bowl to form a paste (a consistency like toothpaste will work).
  • If you decide to use the facial overnight, old tee/nightgown. Use something that you don't mind ruining. Also, cover your pillowcase(s) in a clean, white (or undyed) towel. If you're a wild sleeper, don't even bother sleeping in it, it'll be everywhere...lol.

@GoodGirlGoneGr8 Also where can they get the tumeric? I just got a MAC moisturizer that i've been using to help with my dry skin.

Also if any one uses Henna could you all share how you make and apply your mixes? I just bought a batch and am waiting for it to get to me to try it out. I've read that it can get pretty messy, so i'm not sure what to expect, but for anyone already using it, tips one how to mix and apply it properly would be great!

I plan on getting the pics up as soon as I get my laptop back (in the process of moving at the time) but is anyone using WGHO I just bought some in the white & green bottle & I only used it once so far & wanted to know if anyone has any results from it

Posted By: miss78723

@Spice415 - Thank U much for the compliments! My current length was achieved from wearing half wigs and the volume is mostly and illusion LOL. Its thinner than it looks. I started at the same length you did in April. My hair texture is 4a and 3c by nature mostly 4a around the edges @ the roots. Its very dry and the strands are pretty coarse/thick. Since its so dry, I have a hard time finding products that will keep my curls moist looking with out a TON of shrinkage. Thats part of the reason I have flat ironed all the life out of it. I don't co ash all the time, because just like you, I looove my lather! I co wash only with WEN cleansing conditioner because thats what its meant for. I don't like to co wash with regular conditioner cuz my hair is prone to build up for some reason. I found out from a sample that i really like the mixed chicks leave in conditioner. I want to work it into my routine. I see you already made a nice come up since april! keep up the good work! BTW, where did you get your Henna mix? Is it body art grade?

hey I use cassia henna. There is a free ebook on this site that you can download that tells you all about the different types of henna and how to mix http://www.hennaforhair.com/

it is only really messy if you spill it, so i always apply it in the bathroom where I can easily wipe up any spills

@spice415, My hair is natural. I never had any problems with my ends due to coloring. The only problems I ever had with my ends came from using heat weekly. When I get my hair colored it's bleached first. I just always make sure my moisture is on point and keep up with protein treatments and deep conditioners.

Making the length check tee is very easy. All you need is a ruler, permanent marker, flat surface, and of course a shirt.
1.Lay the shirt on a flat surface. Make sure it's even.
2.Mark off points one inch apart going down. I like to do this only in the middle and not across the whole shirt. Make sure you keep the shirt in place or it'll be uneven
3.Make a line as straight as possible across the points you made going down.
4.Number and you're done.Big smile

@ciara2015 I use WGHO but I use the one in the yellow bottle because it's not as heavy as the one in the white. When I first started using it, it was my only GA and I noticed my growth was a bit faster. It also makes your hair and new growth very soft. Always make sure just to use a tiny bit or it'll weigh your hair down and make it look greasy. I use WGHO once a day or every other day with a scalp massage. And I swear it contributes to my growth.

@spice415 I used henna once because I was out of rhassoul and there was so much hype over it.I just mixed the powder with some plain old water until it was like a thick paste. Though I've heard of people mixing it with all kinds of things. My hair did not like hennaAngry It made my curls looser, my hair was soft after but I think it also caused breakage for me.

@breBR3bre Yikes!...Yea I heard it loosens your curls...but the growth it gives is awesome growth...I'm scared of the breakage happening but was it messy to apply?...

Yes it was everywhereDead Maybe if you make it a thinner consistency you can put it in an applicator bottle or one with a wide opening.

Thanks for the detailed break down on adding hyperlinks GoodGirl!...However i'd prefer if everyone could add their photos to the forum itself...Forums which contain more photos tend to draw others to join...That's why i'm asking everyone to post photos directly to the forum...;)

1) Your family background/Ethnicity- Bajan

2) Age- 17

3) State you're from-GA

4) Eating habits- ooohhhh, they're bad lol. I drink tons of soda every day (gotta stop), but I juuuuust stopped with fast food.so that's a plus

5) Hair texture 3c/4a I'm texlaxed though

6) Body type/Height/Weight- pear, 5'3" , 135 pounds

7) Growth techniques that worked and those that didn't- bunning, moisturizing and sealing, regular deep conditioning, And keeping a clean scalp worked.

Can't think of anything I tried that didn't

8) If you were on a growth challenge before if you succeeded/failed in reaching your goal and how so/why not - I don't even knOw. I get into challenges, don't keep track, and forget about them. I'm hoping I stick to this one lol

9)  Bedtime regimens
I use to finger detangle, m&s, and braid my hair at night or put it in a bun. I need to start with that again. Oh, and I apply tea tree oil to my scalp.

10) Bad Habits you are trying to break out of
Not m&s'ing
Scissor happiness
Not wearing a bonnet
not drinking water

One of my growth aids. Carrot, Lettuce, Alfalfa Sprout juice. I kinda fell off of my juicing bandwagon, but I started juicing again this morning and I plan on being consistent with it.

@promise,
an inch/month is over average and i think most people have to work hard for it, so if you're getting 1/2 inch a month you're fine and that's averageSmile
@GGGGr8,
I thought about juicing because my aunt has a food processor, but Idk if I could do it daily--never tried it yet.
Good luck to you getting back on it!
