Updated 3:01 p.m. - President Barack Obama endorsed the right of same-sex couples to marry on Wednesday, a landmark pronouncement made in light of mounting pressure from gay right advocates.

Obama became the first U.S. president to back the right of gay and lesbian couples to marry, a reversal from views expressed during the 2008 campaign, when he said he opposed same-sex marriage but favored civil unions as an alternative.

Obama http://news.yahoo.com/obama-announces-his-support-for-same-sex-marriage.html" rel="nofollow - told ABC News that, after reflection, he had "concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married."

This will help.
Middle class independents don't oppose gay marriages as vehemtly as other classes of voters.
He knows this and this is why he didn't mind voicing it.
Good move Prez.
Trust me his team looked up the numbers before he decided to say something lol

A vast majority of voters cannot will not be persuaded.
You don't waste time, resources, or political capital trying to win those people over.
Most people are straight ticket voters . Conservative extremists won't like or vote for Obama no matter what.
You go after the people who can be swayed and will vote.
Those people won't mind what he said and some will even applaud it.

This image provided by Keith R. Judd shows the federal prisoner Keith Russell Judd, 49, at the Beaumont Federal Correctional Institution in Beaumont, Texas in this March 15, 2008 file photo.

By The Associated Press

Just how unpopular is President Barack Obama in some parts of the country? Enough that a man in prison in Texas got 4 out of every 10 votes in West Virginia's Democratic presidential primary.

The inmate, Keith Judd, is serving time at the Beaumont Federal Correctional Institution in Texas for making threats at the University of New Mexico in 1999. Obama received 59 percent of the vote to Judd's 41 percent.

For some West Virginia Democrats, simply running against Obama is enough to get Judd votes.

"I voted against Obama," said Ronnie Brown, a 43-year-old electrician from Cross Lanes who called himself a conservative Democrat. "I don't like him. He didn't carry the state before, and I'm not going to let him carry it again."

When asked which presidential candidate he voted for, Brown said, "That guy out of Texas."

< height=439 border=0 ="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/39788177?launch=47356237&PG=MSVPOB&BTS=MSVNMB&height=429&width=600" Border=0 width=600 scrolling=no itxtBad="1" videoId="" thumbnail="http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/j/MSNBC/Components/Video/__NEW_wag_2matthews_120509.thumb.jpg">

Keith Judd, a Texas convicted felon, won over 40 percent of the vote in West Virginia's Democratic primary election on Tuesday, beating out President Obama. MSNBC host Chris Matthews joins NOW with Alex Wagner to discuss the unlikely election outcome.

Judd was able to get on the state ballot by paying a $2,500 fee and filing a form known as a notarized certification of announcement, said Jake Glance, a spokesman for the secretary of state's office.

Attracting at least 15 percent of the vote would normally qualify a candidate for a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. But state Democratic Party Executive Director Derek Scarbro said no one has filed to be a delegate for Judd. The state party also believes that Judd has failed to file paperwork required of presidential candidates, but officials continue to research the matter, Scarbro said.

Voters in other conservative states showed their displeasure with Obama in Democratic primaries last March.

In Oklahoma, anti-abortion protester Randall Terry got 18 percent of the primary vote. A lawyer from Tennessee, John Wolfe, pulled nearly 18,000 votes in the Louisiana primary. In Alabama, 18 percent of Democratic voters chose "uncommitted" in the primary rather than vote for Obama.

Obama's energy policies and the Environmental Protection Agency's handling of mining-related permits have incurred the wrath of West Virginia's coal industry. With the state the nation's second-biggest producer of this fossil fuel, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin and Sen. Joe Manchin —both Democrats have championed the industry — have declined to say whether they will support Obama in November.

Hillary Rodham Clinton beat Obama handily in the state's 2008 primary, and he lost the state to Republican John McCain in the general election. The latest state-by-state Gallup poll, released in January, found Obama with a 32.7 percent approval rating in West Virginia. The president had a lower approval rating only in Utah, Idaho, Oklahoma and Wyoming.

"Keith Judd's performance is embarrassing for Obama and our great state," outgoing West Virginia GOP Chairman Mike Stuart said.

Presumed Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney won West Virginia's GOP primary Tuesday with more than 69 percent of the vote, with 93 percent of precincts reporting. Rick Santorum followed with 12 percent, while Ron Paul had 11 percent.

Brown, the Cross Lanes electrician, went to the polls Tuesday with his 22-year-old daughter, Emily. She planned to vote for Judd, too, until she found out where Judd has been living.

"I'm not voting for somebody who's in prison," she said.

She was certain about one thing: "I just want to vote against Barack Obama."

The ones who have no intention of voting for Obama, will not vote for him. 100 % of those 40% are not going to be swayed by Obama's recent announcement.

No, this is strategy.

He's believes in marriage being between a man or a woman but imo he's not bother by same-sex marriage. He couldn't state that before b/c of politics

Now he's in a position where he can openly support it

I really hope this energizes the young and liberal voters for November. And perhaps the contrast with NC's fail last night will show how horrible it is to deny a group of people equal rights. One would hope we would have learned from slavery, the Jim Crow era, and the Civil Rights Movement how idiotic it is to let the majority vote on a minority group's rights. Clearly this country hasn't learned a damn thing. I'm not surprised.

Its more symbolic that a sitting presidents backs same sex marriage.

The GOP will make this an issue for a little, which is fine because they wont be
discussing the economy.

but then again.. Austerity is morphing into a dirty word at the moment.

President Obama has completed what he called his "evolution" on the issue of gay marriage. During an interview with ABC News on Wednesday, Obama openly endorsed same-sex marriage.

But while this decision will play well to an important part of his base, it also poses some risks for Obama in his re-election efforts.

Following Tuesday's election results in North Carolina, there are now 30 states that have constitutional amendments and/or laws banning same sex marriages.

These states combined represent a total of 309 electoral votes.

Perhaps more importantly, there are also seven critical battleground states among this group: Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Michigan and North Carolina. These states account for 114 electoral votes.

To put that in context, that number alone is more than 40 percent of the 270 electoral votes a candidate needs to win the presidency.

Just because states have provisions barring gay marriage doesn't mean their voters would reject Obama in the fall on that single issue.

Senior administration officials, though, have told Fox News they simply don't know how Obama's endorsement will play, since this is unchartered territory for a sitting president.

Hell has frozen over.LOL

Fox News' Shep Smith seemed to strongly endorse President Obama's newly announced support of same-sex marriage on Wednesday.

Amidst much hype and baited breath, Obama told ABC News' Robin Roberts that he http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/09/obama-gay-marriage_n_1503245.html" rel="nofollow - has completed his so-called "evolution" on the issue and now believes that same-sex couples should be allowed to wed.

On his Fox News show, Smith http://gma.yahoo.com/blogs/abc-blogs/president-obama-affirms-his-support-for-same-sex-marriage.html" rel="nofollow - played the tape of Obama speaking , and then said, "the president of the United States, now in the 21st century."

A couple of minutes later, Smith was speaking to his colleague Bret Baier. He asked Baier if the GOP would campaign against same-sex marriage "while sitting very firmly, without much question, on the wrong side of history on it."

Smith closed out the segment by noting that the issue of gay marriage is still up to individual states. He said that Obama's endorsement "makes no legal change for now, which may sound familiar to a couple of generations ago, but that's where we are."

y'all don't get it, this is a huge step

he's going after the ppl that are "out", the parents of gay kids (a lot of the ones being bullied) and the YOUNG PPL (the same ppl who gave himthe election the first time)...black ppl will vote for him again (again, the same ppl who gave him the election the first time)

this is a very smart move and they have enough time to pass it before the election..

Yes and no. If they really wanted to they could have passed it off as a Joe Biden gaffe and kept moving, but they looked at the numbers and probably were cool with it

no im not but i follow american politics very closely

obama will get the young voters (because they are FOR gay marriage) and because hollywood is backing this move, and then he'll still get a majority of black votes because more black ppl still love him than hate him....most likely he'll get the middle class vote as well .....obviously not in the racist south tho

Lol ain't nobody gonna be thinking about this come election time.
The unemployment rate is still the number one issue.
This was more about fulfilling his head of state duty not head of government,

What really would be a bad move if he decides to push it.
Opinions are fine but if he tries to push something ( which he won't) he will have a states rights issue waiting on him.
Marriage is left up to the states. The Feds would have to trump up some clause in thE constitution to even touch it,

What makes you say that? Doesn't her assertion that he is trying to regain the young voters who supported him the first time around make sense? Along with a sizeable portion of his electorate that want gay marriage to pass?

I said it in my first post.
This is about middle class independent votes.the middle class independents don't have a strong opposition to gay marriage .The LGBT community is not homogenous vote by a long shot. In fact their votes are the hardest to study. Yes this will get them to vote for Obama but they wouldn't have tipped the scale much though many of thm are middle class independents.
This was mostly about getting swing voters and padding his legacy.
He is trying to rack up a long list of firsts.

OK. I think I understand what you are saying. However, parts of the young electorate as well as gays were starting to distance themselves from him due to their perception that he did not keep his promises. Therefore, wouldn't there have been a possibility that these people might become swing voters in the wrong way for Obama, hence his decision to come out with his statement and get them back as well?

The 2008 election was an aberration.
No studies I've looked at prognosticate a turnout out like the 2008 election.
Lol , no politician depends on the youth vote. We're much too fickle and unreliable. We don't vote.
Some of the young voters from 2008 have moved to a different demographic.
But the 18-24 year olds don't usually win elections.
I will say does Obama use the young vote to his advantage. That's what the student loans talk is for.
That and student loans are a culprit in cramping the economy,
