Im really interested in laser hair removal, but I've heard that it doesn't work well with dark skin. Has anyone gotten this done and approx how much? I see a lot of groupons for laser hair removal.

I always hear the commercials for it here in atl on a predominately black radio station. Certain specialists can work with dark skin(so they claim) I think you just have to find the right specialist.

Good luck. Lasers sound scary.Sleepy

im tired of waxing. When I first started waxing, i wouldn't have to worry about my hair growing back for at least 3 weeks. Now give it a week and the hair is growing back. So annoying. I want to laser remove leg, vagina, and arm pit hair and put that hair removal in the past.

Last Friday made 1 year since I started getting laser  hair removal treatments.

I get my bikini and stomach done. Thinking about doing armpits and legs in the near future.

I go to Ideal Image and after my 4th treatment.. the hair pretty much stopped growing in.
I paid for 6 treatments+ 3 "maintenance/spot check" treatments and then w/ their packages you have a lifetime membership in case hormonal changes causes the hair to grow back (ie Pregnancy etc).

Make sure wherever you go that they use the YAG laser which is for Olive skin and darker toned women.

I am 150% satisfied.

What do you wanna know...i've gotten just about everywhere.... except private area.

Lasers: The YAG laser is the best laser for AA skin. I have had done on my face with NO ISSUEs. if you have hyperpigmentation. ie - like when you puck a hair or pop a pimp you get a dark mark...this laser (and other laser hair removal treatments) will also lighten those areas significantly. same goes for underarms..it will remove that dark hue in your arm pits.

There a new laser that im getting on my legs and arms. (yes yall im a chea petLOL) This laser does NOT have the "pop" that the YAG laser has. The YAG laser kinda like a pen they place over the spot but the Alma laser glides over the skin like your using one of the wooden back massegers. However, it does heat up where there is still hair.

Is one laser better than other? IMO, no...both have giving me great results.

OP(or anyone else getting this done)- use groupon! There is no reason you should be paying full price for this service. Laser Hair Removal is a competitive business so you will ALWAYS see groupon deals for this...i would say you should no more than $100 for 2 small areas and <$200 for medium areas

another tip ladies...please do not schedule appointment during or before your period, you tend be more sensentive during those time and it can me more painful that it normally is.

if you have a low tolerance for pain...like you're never gotten a brazilian wax and now you wanna get LHR on your bikini area...you may want to take pain killers before you go. Wink

yes and the groupon should do BOTH sides. For example, if you get one for underarms, your groupon should cover both of them, not 1. I had a friend get scammed by this business, groupon refunded her  money and that business can no longer use Groupon again.

This is a great thread.

I've had it done a few times

First couple treatments were with the regular ole white folks laser, and it didn't cause me any problems until the bitch burned the back of my leg Cry. It was pretty gross. and it was only in 1 spot. Pain is beauty though.. so of course I went to another place when I caught a great deal on Groupons

The tech had a difficult time identifying my skin type (with good reason). First she used the white folks laser on a low setting, no burns, but no results! The hair didn't fall out over the next couple weeks like it should

Then she used the YAG (black folks laser) , no burns and no results!.. She said it was because I was too light for this laser

THEN she used the white folks laser again on a higher setting (alexandrite) and I got a tiny burn, WITH results. Lol.. so I'll take the burns. Plus this burn was no where near as bad as the first one from the other place

Once I can afford it, I plan to get everything done.

but after you got burned you got scab marks, no?

Have u ever burnt your forehead with a curling iron? It was like that. If you havent, it kind of turns into a brown spot and then when you touch it a few days later, it slides off and is slimy or wet. Lol..sounds disgusting. But it wasnt really like a traditional scab

BUT it did scar. Not for too long. Maybe a couple of months.. which could be horrible depending on the area. But again, this was with the white folks laser. Come to think of it, I think the first place I went to used IPL rather than laser, but I was also burned (to a lesser extent) by the alexandrite So if you're brown skinned, they probably wouldn't use either of these on you anyway (unless they don't know what you're doing)

Just make sure you call the places you're considering going to and ask if they have a laser for darker/black skin. If they tell you yes, ask for the name of the laser and do a little research to be safe

Do it! You won't regret it! I'm on my way to one of my appointments later on today. I finally talked my daughter into getting her underarms done (she thinks it going to hurt). They should be able to do a patch test. If the laser isn't good for ur skin type, groupon will give u a full refund.

Well i guess your right. I don't really have anything to lose besides this body hair but i don't want to get all souped and then the laser isn't right for my skin. I tried googling that particular laser but nothing comes up telling me about AA skin.

I am back to old fashioned Electrolysis again.

Why .. because I have ingrown hairs on my chin (a family trait) so 20 or so years ago (when I was younger and had black hair) laser treatments only worked against white skin so and I had to use electrolysis.

Now that some of those hairs on my chin are starting to grow back that they have improved the laser technique so that it works for dark skin. Great, however the hairs on my chin are now gray/white and guess what? This new laser technique for dark skin DOES NOT WORK on light hair ... against dark skin!

Just my luck ...

(The hair on my private area is sparce and grows slow so maybe I shave once a month - takes 2 minutes. Underarm hair maybe once every 2 months - takes a minute. Hair on my legs umm once a year usually I do this at the beginning of summer. Even shaping up my eyebrows  I do about 2 times a month.

BUT THE HAIRS ON MY CHIN!! GROW LIKE THE DICKENS. This should be my last shot at Electrolysis!! The good thing is it's cheap like 20 a session.)

That happened to me, that's why I stopped with the laser. The hair fell out and then some grew back white!! I noticed this with my armpits so I stopped and the hair has gone back to black again. I wax now and it's fine.  I am coming round to the idea of lasering again.... Maybe a different laser type.

Yes, but I did not use the laser .. I used Electrolysis - you know with the needle.

They really killed off all the hair on my chin - it was a mess.

The thing is .. all these years later and few hairs started growing back so stupid me I used the tweezers and guess what - more hair came back. They said when you tweeze the hair or wax (pull it out at the root)  that STIMULATES the surrounding area and makes hair grow back there too!

It is growing back gray though because I am older now so the hair on my head, aunderarms, private area, even a few hairs in my eyebrows and now my chin .. are mostly GRAY/WHITE!.

Of course, I remove/dye (read HIDE) this so this is my secret and noone knows. hee hee!

My only regret on doing laser hair removal is that I should have done it sooner than later. It is the BEST money I have ever spent. :)

I also suggest catching the hair within it's growth periods. So make stick to the sessions within 6 months of each other.

TBH, I did not and still saw results.

I have unlimited sessions on my chin, stomach, back, and brazilian. I just had my 2nd session last weekend. I saw the most obvious results on my pumpum 2 weeks after the first session (since the hair is so dark). A lot of the hair had fallen out leaving it with bald spots which I was really happy with, but unfortunately a lot of the bald spots are filled in now with finer hair, probably due to the next growth cycle coming in. Anyways hoping to see the results for my most recent session in about a week!

It must be a yag machine if your African American otherwise your wasting your money. I used to go to romeo and Julie in Manhattan and that was a total waste of money and I was burned every time I went whyyyyyy because they used a laser dedicated for a white person. It seems like they were practicing on me.

It seems like they were practicing on me.
Suga did you ever go to a place in the city with the yag?

Ideal image in NY has yag. Its expensive so if your cost conscience then call alot of the locations on groupon and ask them if they have a yag laser equipment. Don't let anyone talk you into anything else. The laser they used on me at Romeo and Juliette was totally different. The light came out as a beam and these dummies kept turning it up higher and the hair came back even thicker. When using the Yag you will feel heat and a push of air.
