This is a year long challenge. JAN 2012 to DEC 2012  this challenge is closed

I'm issuing 6 passes for direct heat.  I will also be issuing styling challenges each quarter and product giveaways.

Those of you who know me, know I try to stay away from heat (don't always succeed as much as possible)  This is year 3 for some of us who have done my previous challenges....so we should know what we are doing.

Keep it Cool Rules :
- 6 direct heat passes for the year
-keep it positive in this thread or you will be ousted

LIST OF EXCEPTIONS to the Keep it Cool Rules
hooded dryers, Caruso steam rollers, blow drying on COOL setting, touching up new growth roots, flat ironing leaveout (for weave wearers) and heat caps. These DO NOT count as direct heat

- if you use a heat pass, you must post a pic so those of us who are heat junkies can live through you Wink

- post and update - as my girl Loveakisoy says "no one wants to be in a challenge where no one posts"

- post a starting picture, regimen and goals by Christmas so we can drool and steal from each otherLOL

- give at least one product review during a quarter
(quarter end dates = March 30; June 30; Sept 30 and Dec 30)

- be positive and encouraging Tongue
naturals, relaxed, texlaxed, texturized, whatevas...ALL are welcome!

Deadline to post pics and regimens - Dec. 25

here is my regimen for december 2011

i am in a weave so i shampoo once a week or so, deep condition once a week and apply leave in once a week  I keep it simple.

shampoo - Hairveda Amla Cream Rinse or Vo5 Clarifying conditioner

conditioner - Hairveda MoisturePro

leave in - rosewater glycerin spritz i made with silk aminos and wheat protein added

that's it.  i may start doing hot oil treatments on my braids to seal in additional moisture between washes.

I don't have much of a regimen per se, however here is what I follow loosely:

I co-wash about three times a week with V05 moisture milks or Trader Joes Tea Tree Tingle Conditioner.
I don't really wash my hair, but if I feel it needs a good clarification, I use Shea Moisture's Moisture Rentention Shampoo about once a month.

I keep my hair stretched and detangled about 80% of the time in either a high bun, or about 6-8 braids.

If I do style my hair, I do somewhat of a wash and go with Shea Moisture curl milk, and seal with the curl smoothie which also dubs as something for hold. I also use Jojoba oil.

I only use gel about once every two months, so when I do, it is Ecostyler Gel.

I have a Huetiful Steamer, but to be honest I haven't been that good at DC'ing. However for this challenge, (and for the sake of my hair), I'll be way more diligent with that. I'll steam about once a week.

I always air dry, so not using heat will not be a problem. Just to mention, all product that I use, and will use are sulfate free as well as cone free. Its only within the past few months I've tried the 'CG method' and it seems to be working very well for me.

P.S I am fully natural.

I think this is a great challenge. I've only used heat once this year, and I am seeing drastic results. I think everyone will be surely pleased with their results. Especially for my fellow 'fine haired' ladies. Best of luck!

I'll be back with my regimen for December2011.

Posted By: Khaiya
Date Posted: Nov 27 2011 at 12:48pm
I'm ready!
My reggie is washing and DCing once a week, wearing cornrows or twists during the week, dry baggying (ghe) nightly moisturize with aloe vera mixed with condish, seal with doo gro grease (at the moment). I've kind of unofficially decided not to use heat until i make APL but we'll see, it may be sooner or longer.

BTW, you can edit your posts, just click on Post Options.

yes, you can edit new posts, but i think for like 24 hours or something....you used to be able to go back to them FOREVER....which enabled me to update the heat pass list and the challengers list on page ONE of the thread instead of having it buried in page 100....it makes updates too hard to find.

but thanks for the info.  i was aware that you can edit them, i just wish you had the ability to edit for a longer period of time.Dead

this is what i think i'll keep doing lol.....

* clarify once a month

* cantu shea butter conditioner leave in. i'll seal with coconut oil for M&S
* BANTU KNOT OUTS! twist-n-curls, braid-n-curls, twist outs or braid outs
......... i wish i had enough time to make flaxseed gel. i'm going to use the eco styler gel that i got in the meantime

Glad to be down for year 3!! (though I have fallen off at the end of year 2!!)

My unofficial starting pic (I will post another on 12/31 when I straighten for my year-end pics!)

2012 GOAL: Reach bra strap length by 5/6/12 (my GRADUATION!!)
2012 GOAL: try to cut down on bunning and ponytails (it kills my poor edges...)

Reggie:
-PSing my way to BSL... I will be making myself a U-Part wig after finals (next weekend!) and rocking that for about a month or so... then plan to get a sew-in in January and possibly go right into another in March... possibly.
-DC at LEAST once weekly (ideally twice)
-M&S daily
-Keep shampooing down to every 2 weeks
-Co-wash on non-shampoo weeks
-GAs will be in effect while wearing my wig but not any other time...
-Nioxin vitamins daily (had great results but weight gain... I am working out now so hopefully I won't experience that again...)
-Light protein with every shampoo... heavy protein as needed
-Cassia treatments as needed/desired

#lego ladies!!! =)

Ok so this is my first "official" post in the new challenge!!!!!!  YAY!

Love...your hair looks so amazing!  I remember where it was 2 years ago and your goal was for it to just reach your tattoo!  You WILL be BSL for graduation, no doubt about it.

I just trimmed back to APL and here are my length shots:

And yesterday, I did a flexirod set with grey & purple rollers and only used even INDIRECT heat for about 15 minutes and airdried the rest overnight!  Off to a great start!

Yay I'm in!!! *does happy dance*  I plan on buying my first hooded dryer soon. So this challenge is a good way to make use of that purchase Thumbs Up While I lay my flat iron and blow fryer to the side LOL

Here is my regimen for 2012
- Shampoo and DC/protein treatment weekly
- Moisturize and/or oil ends daily
- flat iron once every 2 months (max)

As for styling, I plan on wearing no-direct-heat, low manipulation protective styles. These include braidouts, flexi-rod sets, rollersets and updos. I might also continue to wear halfwigs on occasion.

@LadySmiles - I saw that on your blog, I think its a great item to purchase for the winter especially.  I wanna get a floor model dryer next.  Saving my pennies!

So, I am SO inspired to try so many heat free styles.  Like even though my flexi set is lasting me so well, I have a ton of things I wanna do.  I'm glad I'm excited about doing my hair again.  I loved http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fb2Msu8Zapk" rel="nofollow - PrettyDimples Jumbo Flexi rod set so I purchased 4 packs of 1" rods and I plan on using them this weekend.  I think I'm going to do huge sections and comb the curls out to get a loose curl/slightly messy look rather than a defined "set" like my last flexirod set.  Of course I'll be taking pics!

How are you ladies wearing your hair?

So just finished putting in genie locs/yarn braids plan to keep them in for a month (yeah me, learned how to do it myself from youtube. Not that hard actually) (been 2 weeks so far). Think there kinda cute! I put in a light leave in everyday and spritz with water at night :D. Plan to deep condition once I take them out!

(excuse the derp face Sleepy) I have an 8am class >_>

Only problem is that the top part is getting fuzzy so I have been wearing hats to hide it or that top knot thingy. REALLY debating redoing it this weekend >_>

Mini twists!!! Ah super cute. My friend just did some last week (her hair is bsl and she curled them. GORGEOUS!). Can't wait till my hair gets long....its about neck length (flat ironed) the last time I checked. You should post pics!!

Also thank you to all the positive comments. I have gotten a lot more positive comments on my hair in these genie locs then when pressed :D One lady stopped me and was all like. "So how long did you have your locs?"

Hey ladies!  I'm loving all these pictures of hair!!!  Keep the pics coming....flexirod sets, jeanie locs or twists, and growth shots....love 'em.

Well nothing new to report - I got my new shipment of nioxin vitamins, I'm going to be taking two everyday for the next six months - God willing and then see what happens after that.  All I've been doing with my hair is moisturizing it.

23 more days before the end of the year!

Ok so this is my first "official" post in the new challenge!!!!!!  YAY!

I just trimmed back to APL and here are my length shots:

And yesterday, I did a flexirod set with grey & purple rollers and only used even INDIRECT heat for about 15 minutes and airdried the rest overnight!  Off to a great start!

your curls are gorgeous!!

me, i have finally mastered the bantu knot!! at least i think so. at first, i was doing a two-strand twist and then about 12 knots (my hair is about neck length give or take in some areas). i didn't like that. the curls were too small. i tried to do about 8 knots with the two strand twist, and didn't like that either. i realized it was the two-strand twist that was giving me the problem. i tried 8 without two strand, and that got the curl, just not enough of them. now, i did 13 without the two strand twist and i haven't taken them out yet, but i think they are going to be perfect!!!

:) yay me!

@loveloreal - I couldn't get a good BKO to save my life the entire first year and a half of my journey.  But once I got it, I GOT IT!  I tried a two strand twist one also, but it didn't work for me.  And um, shouldn't you be back with pics by now young lady?!?!?! lol!

Here is this weeks flexirod set, I am planning to do a 6 month rollersetting challenge so ya'll will see a lot of variations of different rollers, lol.  The goal this week was to get curls that looked as if they had been done with a curling iron.  Loose, flowy and full!  And that is exactly what I got!  Tutorial on http://longing4length.blogspot.com" rel="nofollow - my blog and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIMjU4WOIic" rel="nofollow - youtube , if interested.

My 6 month heat free relaxer stretch is almost up and it's going so well that I've decided to carry on til I hit 9 months which should put me at APL.

Tip for ladies who are trying to stretch without heat... mix yogurt, oil and honey and apply it to the new growth like you would a relaxer. It makes my hair so soft and manageable that I don't even miss my relaxer

I'm keeping my hair twisted up or cornrowed, (usually a mix of both) my desire to straighten has completely gone out the window for now, want to wait until at least hit APL (1 inch to go) gonna try and wear twists for a week, wash and dc with my twists in and then wear a twistout for another week before starting the process over.

@Prettigurl - you showed up outta NOWHERE with your BC!!! I watched your YT update like HUH?!  lmao!  Congrats!!!  You seem so ecstatic about it and I love it!

@Angellic - I did a rollerset this weekend also.  What kind of dryer do you have?

@Lovelo -  O no, you're one of those, huh?  Please refer back to the first page for my original comments about being a hair stalker/picture obsesser!  I love drooling over other ppl's heat free styles!

As for me, I did my first ponytail rollerset...it was kind've a fail.  The hair inside the ponytails didn't dry and I ended up using a diffuser (but from far away though, not directly on my hair) to dry and flat ironing my roots.  It was STILL so much better than blowdrying and flat ironing the whole thing though!  Plus my hair has the body of a rollerset instead of the flat look of flat ironing. So I'm pleased.  Results:

NayNay, Yakuria and ECP - lovely pics.  I swear you ladies are so creative...I'm loving those Sengalese twists.  I twist my hair but never thought about adding extra hair....I gotta try that.

Nothing new to report, I'm braiding my daughter's hair and burning the ends of the extensions to seal them.  I'm just doing box braids.  As for my hair, I'm in twists.  I bought this new leave in called Big Sexy Hair Soy Tri-Wheat Leave In and man I'm in love.  Of course I doctored it up, I added some glycerin and my aphogee multi-vitamin leave in and wow, my hair is uber soft...so I got my protein and moisture all in one leave in.   I can't wait till my twists dry since I'm doing a twist out, I want to see how different this leave in makes my hair.

I still haven't worn my U-part wig that I made....maybe over the holidays I will get somene to cornrow my hair and I can sew in some combs and try to wear it.

Adding a starting pic and re-posting info for convenience

Here is my regimen for 2012
- Shampoo and DC/protein treatment weekly
- Moisturize and/or oil ends daily
- flat iron once every 2 months (max)

As for styling, I plan on wearing no-direct-heat, low manipulation protective styles. These include braidouts, flexi-rod sets, rollersets and updos. I might also continue to wear halfwigs on occasion.

STARTING PICS:

Last time I flat ironed was August. Before that was November of last year.

August:

Here is a length check as of December

December:

Here is how I will maintain my hair without using heat. It has worked so far, so I think I'll keep doing this for awhile.

Protective Styles:

Wash n go without using Gel. Just Shea Butter

Puff

So my start pic. Notice the horribly heat damaged ends. (I have about hmm 5 inches of new growth and the rest is heat damaged)

So I got lazy and put in my yarn braids again (I had so much left over Tongue). I did them a little past bra strap length layered this time:

Hopefully I will get a camera for Christmas (and can take better pics)

Also after taking out my previous yarn braids I didn't notice any breakage etc but my hair was a little dry. I think I'm gonna switch leave-ins. Currently just using water and some wave nouvea cream.

Also I want to buy the huetiful steamer. Has anyone bought/used it before?

@Yakuria I have one. I have a review for it already written out I just have to add pics and then it will be posted on my blog. I've had it since September and so far so good as far as the benefits to my hair...

@caiohme your curls are so cute!!!

Ladies, after I pay all my bills and assess my finances, I may be purchasing a new hooded dryer!!! =))))

Thanks Love! :)

@ Yakuria, I have a Huetiful Steamer. I do enjoy it but the only issue I have with it however is the hood is sort of small. I end up having to change positions in order to steam my nape. Other than that, it works very nicely.

Yakuria - you are such a cutie-pa-tootie....no homo here either, but I swear your pics are adowwable.

Now onto the issue at hand - HAIR-----AAAAARGH!  I SURRENDER, I'M STOPPING THE MADNESS...
*just needed upper case for dramatic effect*...LOL  I'm tired of twists, buns, and wash and gos, as well as my ill fated attempt at making a wig which when I put it on I look likeImage Detail

so I'm going back under a weave.  I decided to take out my old Extensions Plus Wavy hair,
wash it condition it and at some point before the end of the year get my weave on.  I
was THIS>< CLOSE TO PUTTING A RELAXER IN MY HAIR....you all know I've lost it
right so before I do any harm, I'm going back under...lol

Vent over....LOL

Still happily heat free.
I'm going to jump on the henna bandwagon. Maybe some nice color will make my hair less boring. The only "style" I've been doing is pinning my hair up loosely. It's ever so dull. I was tempted to try braids but I'm afraid that the braider will rip through my 6 months worth of new growth with a fine toothed comb (she's the type of woman who you CAN NOT tell anything, she's ALWAYS right) so I'll just stick to being boring LOL

@Yakuria you and your braids are soooo cute! I wish I knew how to do them myself, I don't trust anyone with my hair anymore

@PrettiYoungThin = I know right? I went into a salon one time and a lady jacked up my hair....what a mess. I wanted a perm (NOT relaxer) with wave nouveau. Sigh. My hair came out BONE straight... So now I'm the only one that touches my hair. I braid, trim and all that by myself! Angry

It's hard to believe that a hotgirl like me has given up heat for so long. It has been about 6 months or so and I don't plan on using a pass until my bday in June. I'll be one year natural and one year heat free!!

Hi pretti!! Ya i've been missing for a while (wondering if i replied to you before but dont remember) I've been natural now for.....2 years i think, did the bc a year ago when i could make a teeny weeny bun. Been really lazy with taking pics tho so i have only a fewOuch. Never dreamed you would be going natural Pretti, especially with a BC!! Figured you'd just transition.

I'm still in this challenge, still gonna post pics, problem is i usually check my forums from my phone and since bhm "upgraded" i cant post from my phone, i can only read posts so thats why i've been so absent. Flat ironed last Thursday for the last time this year and didnt take a starting picOuch gonna just have to do a stretched hair pic, here's a pic of my curled hair just the same.
