I wish I could join, but I don't think I'll be WL class of 2012.  I'll probably be MBL at the most.  I'll stick around for next year's challenge though. Wink

Fotki: I don't have a fotki
Starting Length: Bra strap length
Hair Status: Color treated natural. Hair type is mostly 4a.
Expect to Achieve WL by: December 2012
My Short Term Goals:
1. Maintain my ends
2. Reach MBL
3. Strong, healthy hair.

Regimen:

I wash once a week with Aphogee moisturizing shampoo.

I cowash once or twice a week with pantene relaxed and naturals conditioner or Vo5 moisture milks in Passion fruit.

I oil rinse once a week using extra virgin olive oil, pantene relaxed and natural conditioner, and tropical rain coconut conditioner as a leave-in.

Btw, quick question from a potential member... Uhh, pictures.. if I'm in a weave, should I update anyways? Or do you mean length check pictures? :s

Fotki:  http://my.fotki.com/ - http://my.fotki.com/   If, for some reason, my Fotki cannot be accessed through the link, my username is ajamonroe.
Starting Length:  The pictures in my Fotki aren't my most recent pictures.  I will have updated photos tomorrow.   I will have updated pictures on the day of my wash.  If I had to say a length, I would say I am full APL.
Hair Status:  Color treated natural.  I wear my hair pressed, curled, or straightened 97.5% of the time.
Expect to Achieve WL by:  December 2012.  (I would like to reach it sooner, though.)
My Short Term Goals:
1. Thicker hair.
2. Revive some of my hair's natural curl pattern.
3. Healthier hair.

Regimen:  For me, the less I do to my hair, the better.
  • Wash and deep condition my hair with Morracan Oil shampoo and conditioner every three weeks.
  • No access heat!

That's all I have for my regimen.  I learned the hard way that trying to do too much for my hair does more harm than good.

Whoop Whoop! Party

Ok so my main plan is to be in weaves until I reach my desired hair length. Since we have to update once per month I'll only be able to take pics of my leave out.

These are the most recent hair length pics I have (taken in June) since I'm currently in an install. At this point I was APL:

Fotki: http://public.fotki.com/assiyrabomb/
Starting Length: Last check June 2011 :APL
Hair Status: Texlaxed... June 04, 2011
Expect to Achieve WL by
: Sept 2012

My Short Term Goals:

1. BSL by Dec 2011
2. MBL by April 29th, 2012 (my bday!!)
3. Use heat no more than once a month...
4. Healthy, full WL by Dec 2012

Note: I have some split ends that at some point I'll have to get ride of. Based on my growth rate I would be WL by 09/12 but because I'll have to do a little snipping I hope to be healthy WL by Dec 2012

Regimen:
I get a sew in every 8 weeks. I take out the weave at week 6, let my real hair breathe for 2 weeks then get a new sew in.

Hair care while in weaves:

-Spray S Curl in braids, every 2-3 days.
-Moisturize/seal my leave out once per day

Hair care when weaves are out (again for 2 weeks after each sew in)

-deep condition hair as soon as I take weave out
-moisturize/seal daily
-oil rinse before day before I get a new sew in

Products:

S-Curl Spray
Carrot Oil Creme Moisturizer
Jojoba Oil
Creme of Nature Shampoo
Aussie 3 minute Deeeep Conditioner
Aphogee products (for protein) when needed

Good luck ladies!!!!

Your update is your written progress. Photo check-ins are the 15th of each month.
If you're in an install, snap a pic of your new growth, or at least post photos in between installs.
No strictness here...

I think I want to join... but I have a question first about me being realistic.. My hair right now is somewhere between SL or APL because of a major haircut I recently got... Is it realistic (aka scientifically possible) to hit waist length in a year and a half? I know it depends on growth rate.. but I'm new to actually doing things to make my hair grow

I am currently using megatek and will start taking biotin soon.. I have pictures of my length about a month ago (before sew in) and a pic of 1 month new growth(dark roots against my blonde hair) if it will help you answer my question let me know. Lol if not, I will sit back and admire yall. Good luck ladies!

oh also, my hair has always stopped retaining length around MBL if that makes any difference.. but I'm taking better care now

I'd love to give you a simple yes or no, but in all honesty its better that you do the math:

1. Measure the length from where your hair is now, to where your waist is.
This is how many inches you need to grow to get to waist from where you are. Write down the number.

2. Divide the number by 16 (the maximum number of months in this challenge).
This will give you the number of inches you'll need to grow per month to get to waist.

3. Compare that number to your own growth rate.
  a) If the number is higher than your growth rate, then you probably won't make it in 16 months.
b)If the number is lower than your average growth rate, then you should make it waist with no problem provided there aren't any setbacks.

Ok. I think im ready to get back on the WL train! Ive been steadily recovering from a major setback for 7 months now and I think the worst is over. It was so devastating that I haven't photographed my hair since January. Will be back with my check-in info when I can take a good starting pic.

Im sooo excited!!! Lets get it !!!

Fotki: Don't have one.
Starting Length: About APL
Hair Status: Transitioning (about two years of natural growth)
Expect to Achieve WL by: December 2012,  if not before that
My Short Term Goals:
1. BSL by December 2011
2. MBL by March or April 2012
3. WL by December 2010
3. FULL WL by sometime in 2013

Regimen:
I'm in an install currently so I just wash my hair once a week and get under my braids and keep them moisturized and clean.

I don't usually wear my hair out unless I've just taken my install down. I'm also in a PS challenge, and I'll probably be wearing weaves until December 2012 because my hair grows best that way.

I'm currently taking 2 1000mg pills of MSM. So far it's made my body hair grow really fast (LOL) but I just started taking it a week ago so I'm not sure how it's affected my hair.

ETA: Update with picture. This was about a month ago (I believe July 22nd) I didn't straighten very well and I had just taken it down from being in a bun.

I would like to join this challenge please!!!

Fotki: I don’t remember my fotki at the moment. I don’t use it at all but once I remember I’ll update.
Starting Length: grazing APL
Hair Status:Currently in a weave with some left out on top
Expect to Achieve WL by: December 2012
My Short Term Goals:
1. I’m going to focus on getting thicker ends, split ends and ssk’s
2. Healthier hair all around
3. BSL by 12/2011

4. Cutier Protective styles

5. Full BSL by 02/2012 and full MBL by 06/2011. I don’t even know if the is doable but that’s what I want

Regimen: I’m currently taking nioxin 2 a day, MSM 1000 mg, omega 3 6 9, super b complex once a day and spirulina when I remember. (I’m thinking of adding a biotin tablet as well)

My regimen while in the weave is new to me. I’ve had about 5 weaves and this is my first during my HHJ. I’ve only had it about a week but so far I’ll use braid spray mixed with a little aloe vera juice and infusium on my hair every night. The part that’s left out I haven’t done too much just a little moisturizer. I’m not sure what my wash schedule should be yet. I’m still researching that part. But I’m leaning towards once a week. I haven’t washed yet because it’s only been a week. But once I do I plan on using my sulphur and MN mixes.

When I’m not weaved up I co-wash then seal just about every day and wet bun. Deep condish once a week. I’ve recently added henna to the mix which I love love love. Don’t smack me but I just did my first hard protein treatment for the first time about 2 weeks ago. Before that I was using aphogee 2 minute reconstructor. I try to stay in twists if I’m not bunning but they don’t last as long as I would like. They get too frizzy too fast for my liking.

Hopefully I get to WL before Dec 2012. If this install goes well I’ll probably stay in a weave so I’m not messing with my hair so often. Good luck to everyone.

Tiff D

Hair Status: I am not sure because I never put heat in my hair. Not even after perms. It sheds a lot but I am just assuming that it is normal. I neglected it this summer but I hope throughout the semester I treat it more carefully.
Expect to Achieve WL by: December 2012
My Short Term Goals:
1. Hair to get thicker
2. Ends to get fuller
3. Stop "pulling hair down" to check for new growth

I wanna join!!! Big smile

I think I'm just hitting MBL now, so I may make it to WL by the end of 2011. Nonetheless, my goal is FULL, HEALTHY, BLUNT WL so I'll join this challenge in hopes that I'll make it by 12/31/12.

Here is the fotki link to my starting pic (taken on 8/28/11)
http://public.fotki.com/KindOfaBigDeal/length-check-82811/stretched-back.html#media - http://public.fotki.com/KindOfaBigDeal/length-check-82811/stretched-back.html#media

Fotki: http://public.fotki.com/KindOfaBigDeal/ - http://public.fotki.com/KindOfaBigDeal/
Starting Length: Ummm.....MBL Embarrassed
Hair Status: 3+ years Natural
Expect to Achieve WL by: 12/31/2011 (but want to achieve FULL, BLUNT WL by 7/2012)
My Short Term Goals:
1. Achieve healthy, even ends
2. Grow out the top and shortest layer
3. Get direct heat usage (blow-dryer, flat-iron) down to <6x a year.

Regimen:
Whats that?! (LOL!) Honestly, I just clarify, wash, DC, blow-dry and flat-iron once every 4-5 weeks. I moisturize and seal my hair and ends especially about 2x a week. When under a weave- I cowash and DC once a week, and make sure that any leave out stays moisturized and sealed by spraying watered down condish mix in it every day.

I also try to get my ends clipped every 3 months or so and I take five 1000 mg garlic pills every day to minimize shedding (and improve heart health! LOL)

It's not much of a regimen, I know. But less is more for me. I found I had the most growth by limiting my manipulation, period.

So- am I in? Big smile

Hey whipmyfro,
my setback was caused by me doing too much in a short period of time. I colored my hair a lighter shade of brown, then relaxed it a couple of weeks later, THEN...decided I didn't like the color so I dyed black a couple weeks after that. By January I was pulling out hair by the handfuls. Breakage occurred at the root! Ouch All around the edges, crown and nape got it really bad. As well as some other breakage in other spots. Talk about devastated. I can't swear off relaxing but I'm swearing off coloring...... for real this time.

I wanted to add that I included vitamins (Hair, Skin, and Nails & Prenatals to aide me on this journey).

Hi fellow challengers! I clipped my ends about two weeks ago. I trimmed about an inch off to get rid of some dry ends and single strand knots. Today I did an oil rinse and a protein treatment with an egg, mayo, honey, olive oil and a little herbal essences hello hydration conditioner. The protein treatment was just what k needed, my hair feels amazing!! I tried a new product today, the elasta qp olive oil and mango butter moisturizer. I will let you know how my hair feels in the morning.

Hello ladies...well fall is fast approaching in NY so my routine is changing a little. I'll be doing nothing but loose buns during the week. Wash & DC, then air drying & putting my hair in two braids on saturdays. I don't plan on relaxing my hair again until Nov. That will give me another 12-14wk stretch. I'll be checking in from time-to-time.

Hi yall...I am natural
My reggie is pretty simple
shampoo 1x per week
co-wash 3 to 2x per week
deep condition every time I wash
I am (barely) APL right now...
016
the main reason why I join this challenge is to hopefully to stay on top of my hair so I could reach my goal of WL...

It seem like I have been APL for a long time...I reach APL for the first time last year...then I cut my hair...reach it again about 4 to 3 months ago...
Then my dumb Censored used a hair dye without strand testing it...The dye killed my hair so I had to cut my hair to SL and now I'm back at APL again...

So I hoping by the beginning of 2012 I will be BSL
Then WL at the end of 2012
*crossing my fingers*

right now I'm using weaves and half wigs to help me reach my goal...
028
I am also using mega-tek...and sulfur mix...
I can't say it is going anything for my hair growth yet b/c it is my first time using it...but i will keep yall updated though....

I will come back and edit all of this as time progresses

Fotki:  Don't have one.. but I will get one and update this post when I do--is it necessary or can I make a photobucket album?

Starting Length:  Short. LOL Not sure, it's been a month since I've had it down, but its past SL

Hair Status:  Dyed blonde. No bleach. Natural. Currently in a sew-in, flat ironed leave-out

Expect to Achieve WL by:  December 2012. (My hair is short, but hey, let me dream! Plus I have a high waist)

My Short Term Goals: (stole from DOllish)
1. Thicker hair.
2. Revive some of my hair's natural curl pattern.. My whole top layer won't curl right anymore.. but I guess this is more of a long-term goal then...
3. Healthier hair. (especially top layers)
4. Moisturize and seal my leave out, and actually moisturize under my braids aside from when  I wash
5. Grow out these hideous layers

Regimen:

-Megatek Top Secret Potion at least 4x/week
- Wash leave out as necessary (usually 1-2 times/week)
-Wash under weave as necessary (usually 9-14 day intervals)
- Multivitamins.. may start taking my Biotin, but I'm scared of the acne

Here is a pic of my length as of 7/20... plus the 2 new growth pics (the color looks off cause I contrasted it some since the lighting was bad in the originals..haha those white spots in the one pic is from flyaway hair, not flakes)

Hi Ladies, welcome to all!

I can't believe how fast the end of this year is coming up. 3.5 months!
For some of us, that's 3.5 inches... (check the "Inch in a Month thread)

My birthday is in Oct, so I'm gonna start my challenge in Oct. Will post another pic soon. NG is making me look short, but its ok. In 3 months, I'll be about MBL - fingers crossed.

Just got back from the drugstore. I'm going strong with the vitamins (again) starting today. My vitmain reggie is as follows:

2-1000mg flax seed
2-1000mg MSM
1-prenatal
1-hair, skin & nails (just using those up)

I see some of you are worried about being able to get from the BSL area to WL within a year.
Lets think about this...

The average head of hair grows about 6 inches, so if your BSL to WL distance is less than 6 inches, you should make it.

Using my photo below: APL is at "5", BSL is at "7", MBL is at "8" and WL is at "11".  I've cut since this photo but hovering somewhere around the 6 mark. So in the next year if I retain all of my approximate 6 inches, I will be PAST WL and heading towards HIP.

It's completely doable if you stay away from scissors. Those using growth aids may see more than the average 6 inches of growth.

Goals: APL by 7/14 ~ Full BSL by 10/14

Good luck to all participating!

I ended last year at WL, but had few set backs this year.   Unfortunately my ends kept breaking off a lot.  I mean, every time I would comb my hair, whether with a wide tooth comb or with my fingers, my hair would break off.  From January 2011 - August 2011, I grew about 5 inches, but only kept about 1.  I finally went to a stylist, knowing I would have to have a trim (didn't have one in over 3 years), not knowing that I would need 5 inches cut off, so I did.  I was so upset leaving the salon, but it had to be done.  Now I'm back to BSL.

Fotki: http://public.fotki.com/ChubbyYeti/ - http://public.fotki.com/ChubbyYeti/
Starting Length: BSL
Hair Status: Relaxed
Expect to Achieve WL by: Fall 2012
I have a recent photo in fotki, but will post a starting photo at the end of December.

My Short Term Goals:
1.  Use Direct heat no more than once a month.
2.  Protective style 70% of the time.
3.  Check and maintain my ends once a week.
4.  MBL by March 2011.

Regimen:

I'm still experimenting trying to create a regime that will keep my hair moisturized and breakage free.
  • I will begin to wash my hair twice a week with Herbal Essences Hello Hydration.  I will use the companion conditioner once a week and deep condition once a week with ORS Olive Oil.
  • Protein treatment once a week.
  • Oil wash twice a month with olive oil.
  • Moisturize and seal every night.
  • Air dry after each wash.  Occasionally roller set.
  • Blowdry/flat iron, no more than once a month.
Will most likely get a net weave after the holidays to protect hair.

Is it better to style hair with a wide tooth comb or a brush?  Which one is better when your hair is wet vs dry?  What's the best type of brush to use that doesn't damage your ends?

Hey ChubbyY...I'm sorry for your breakage. I'm having the same issue when I stretch. I started garlic pills & am trying to keep up my vitamin intake. Don't know if it will help, but maybe it will increase the stretch of the hair coming in. anyway, I would NOT bruch wet hair. If your hair is wet & you need to detangle, use a wide tooth comb. I use a vent brush to comb my hair normally, and if I need a really sleek bun, I'll use a boar's hair brush to brush my hair, but stay away from my ends.

One of the things I decided was to leave the hair to the professionals.  I want longer, healthier hair and my attempts to care for my hair, failed. So, I went for my first hair appointment Thursday. It was the first time I washed my hair in September. My hair feels like silk. Smile But it’s so thin! That’s one of the things I want to work on. It did get thicker over time, but I had a major setback a few months ago. So I want to focus not just on length, but also on the health and condition of my hair.

That's my mini check-in.

I'm in!! Waist length is my ultimate goal length

Blog: http://www.myhealthyhairjourney.blogspot.com/ - http://www.myhealthyhairjourney.blogspot.com/
Starting Length: a little past BSL
Hair Status: Relaxed, last touch-up was Sept 24th, 2011.
Expect to Achieve WL by: Spring 2012 (just in time for my grad)

I will post my starting picture when the challenge officially starts.

My Short Term Goals (will complete by the end of the year):
1. Use up product stash (by not buying products and just using what I have at home)
2.  To flat iron MAX 3 times for the rest of 2011.
3. To reach full, without-a-shadow-of-a-doubt MBL (this means no trimming...only S&D)
4. Grow bangs to Collarbone length

Regimen: I moisturize and/or oil my hair daily. As needed (usually weekly), I prepoo then shampoo. I deep condition OR do a protein treatment with every shampoo. I co-wash often during the week. I baggy on non-wash nights and stretch my relaxers 10-12 weeks.

The above is my regular regimen. However I'm going to tweak it for the winter (less co-washing and pre-pooing).

Staple Products: Kenra moisturizing conditioner, Roux Porosity control, Aphogee 2 Minute, CHI Silk Infusion, S-curl moisturizer, Fantasia IC Gel, ORS Edge control

I still need to buy Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose, Coconut oil (maybe), and JBCO (definitely). Also need to purchase a moisturizing shampoo b/c my Dove is almost done.

Just checking in...I measured and I'm about 4-6 inches away from waist length. So technically it should take 8 to 12 months to get there.

Count me in!Big smile
Starting photos:

Fotki: Don't have one
Starting Length: Brushing BSL should be full BSL by Jan 1st
Hair status: Natural. Heat trained. 4a. Coarse texture. I only wear braids or pressed hair.
My goal: To grow my hair as long a possible. Hoping to have booty length hairSmile
Should reach WL by... just want to reach WL by Dec 2012. I could technically reach it by October of next year but I plan to do a 1-2" trim to reduce the amount of layers that I have.

My regimen: My regimen is pretty simple. I wear extension braids or I flat iron my hair. Everything else tends to break my hair off and be way too high maintenance. I'm no longer doing braidouts for now.

-Shampoo/DC every 2-3 weeks and flat iron.
-Extension Braids in 10 week sessions, redoing all edges after 5 weeks. I keep my hair hidden in braids for at least 6 months out of the year.

-Products:
Shampoo: Aussie Aussome volume, Giovanni TTTT
Conditioner: Aussie moist, Vo5 moisture milks, Aubrey organics HSR
Protein: Giovanni smooth as silk
Serum: Ion glossing mist. I loooooveeeeeee this productStar
Heat Protectant: Beyond Zone
Oil: jojoba oil, coconut oil, evoo.
Braid spray: Worlds of Curls Comb-out conditioner/ Oil sheen spray.
Extra products I sometimes use: porosity control, various hair greases, cantu shea butter

ETA: more information!
