I've heard of the voodoo one...but not just about Haitians
A friend of mine said that they would never mess with a Haitian girl because they are Haitian....pls don't ask me what he meant by this, because to this day, I still don't know...Confused
I've heard that they are all dark skin (which is totally not true)

I know this chick, she was supposed to go to DR for the summer, but got scared and backed out because she said she didn't want them to think she was Haitian and do something bad to her....*stupid o'*Angry

There wasn't a sizeable Haitian population in my city when I was growing up, so I didn't really hear any Haitian steroypes.  One of my bf in college was part Haitian, and she told me that the stereotype was that the females were unattractive which of course isn't true.  Interestingly enough, one branch of my family tree leads to Haiti, so I'm always interested in learning more about the culture.

patti ... I hope you aren't getting they all eat dirt from me ... I said I'm not aware of any haitian stereotypes

I saw a documentary on haiti and they spoke of the very poor having to survive on clay cookies, baked from clay, salt and vegetable oil, dried/baked on the roof of the prison.

The reason why you find so many Haitians named Marie is because of  a lack of explaining a cultural practice.

It is custom for practicing Haitian Catholics to give their children saint names, Saint Mary being the most noble of choices. So at birth the real name isn't Mary, or Marie in the English equivalent, it is actually their middle name but in Proper French the middle name goes first, at least that is what my mom told me.

For instance my mother's first name is Augustine, another "saint" name I believe. But they add the Marie in front as they would any child. So all of my aunts are Mary Rose, Mary Antionette, etc. But truthfully, their names are Rose and Antionette.

When these Haitian women come to the states I guess they don't communicate this practice and Mary Augustine, Mary Rose, and Mary Antionette becomes Marie Augustine, Marie Rose, and Marie Antionette.

So the same goes for alot of Haitian men: Jean Gene, Jean Leopold, Jean Luc. Named after St. John. The true names are Gene, Leopold, and Luc. But in America the paperwork is handled as such so that Jean is documented as the first name.

I suppose this is very similar to alot of women for at least one generation in Southern culture to have the middle name Ann. Lu Ann, Polly Ann, Mary Ann. The only difference being is that because it's the middle name, there isn't any name confusion. LOL!

Interesting huh?

I've always wondered if or how rich haitians identify with the poorer haitians?

Is the poverty too daunting to deal with?

Is poverty looked at, like a caste, a condition you're born into and can't be changed?

I've not heard a discussion on poverty in haiti and how the rich of haiti perceive or relate to it.

They found an area so impoverished in Haiti that the people were eating dirt. So in essence it is true, its simply not true of all of Haiti.

And most of the rich are of the "mulatto elite" as I mentioned in that Michelle Bennett thread, the ex wife of Jean Claude Duvalier. And they look down on the poorer darker peoples of Haiti.

I actually don't think the mud patties is propoganda

BUTTER-FLAVORED
‘In Haiti, where three-quarters of the population earns less than $2 a day and one in five children is chronically malnourished, the one business booming amid all the gloom is the selling of patties made of mud, oil and sugar, typically consumed only by the most destitute. “It’s salty and it has butter and you don’t know you’re eating dirt,” said Olwich Louis Jeune, 24, who has taken to eating them more often in recent months. “It makes your stomach quiet down.”’

Comment from a Haitian:

“I live in Haiti, and when I find news about Haiti it’s often some variation on the story “people in Haiti are so poor they eat dirt”. I think it may be more complex than that. I live in an area that is poor, but not especially poor by Haiti standards. The vendors selling candy on the side of the road will often have a stack of mud cakes next to the candy, and I have seen children choosing to buy them instead of candy – very odd. Apparently, only a particular kind of fine-grained clay is used, and it is mixed with butter and salt and flavored. Pregnant women especially seem to crave the mud cakes. I theorize that there are minerals in the mud that Haitians aren’t getting from the standard rice and beans diet. I’m not saying that the statement “Haitians are so poor, they have to eat dirt” is 100% false, but I don’t think poverty is the only reason for this. No, I haven’t tried eating one yet.”

Santeria...... a pejorative term that characterizes deviant Catholic forms of worshiping saints, has become a common name for the religion.

Well many practicing Catholics in Haiti also practice voodun. The problem is when one assumes all Haitians do.

Even so, they all aren't eating mud. And this is a very recent trend in a few areas.

This is a huge stereotype where I live. Most Haitians and Jamaicans DONT get along. I've also heard most Haitians and Jamaicans aren't compatable when it comes to dating

Haitians not liking Jamaicans is an old misconception amongs West Indians. And not the only one. Bajans don't like Jamaicans. Jamaicans don't like Trini's. I've heard it all.

It's my personal feeling that these "dislikes" started from some woman or man who was spurned.

There is way too much mixing of these cultures to take this seriously.

only ones I heard were the men were controlling and the voodoo bit. I remember watching a documentary years ago where they showed people twisting a chicken's neck and spilling the blood for rituals.

It was also mentioned that although a majority of the country is Catholic, the people who practice voodoo consider it separate from Catholicism and it is not unusual for them to practice both.

Actually it wasn't on some "BS". I personally have found Haitans to be extremely loyal, dedicated and ambtious people. They stop at nothing to get what they want. That was my stereotype.....sooo

Half the time I read your threads I just feel that you need to shut the hell up sometimes. You love to stir the pot to get attention. you r a lame.

yeah the cat thing is the one I heard. If that grio and that other stuff ( pickly I think...) is cat, then I am down cause that stuff tasted so good in high school LOL.

alot of my friends are hatian, they used to scare the sh*t out of me with voo doo stories. One time they told me that there were mermaids in Haiti, in a canal area that used to steal people and eat them. Then they told me that there was a little evil creature in someone's house and they had to get a preacher to come and get it out.

They used to have me scared Shocked.

Oh please let me know what 'sweeping generalization' you were going to make. I noticed after 9 pages you have yet to say what generalization you were going to make.

Oh and sweetie, dont even think about saying it was going to be positive, because you WILL failLOL

That they are all black as tar. A Trinidadian professor (back in the 70s) said that it was true "that Haitians have been painted with the tar brush." Up until that point, I had never met a Haitian person, so I figured it was true. I tell you that the following week, I met about twenty Haitian people and only one of them was very dark-skinned (and to this day he is still one of the finest men I have ever seen). When I saw that they come in as many colors as African-Americans, I was genuinely shocked.

Oh of course now its nothing but good things, because thats what people do when they make a thread about stereotypes, they only expect good answers. Smh lmfao.  I pity your ignorance. I really do.

i know too many haitian women named Marie___ but they all go by their middle names. Same for my father as well with Jean.

Interestingly-I'm not named after a saint or anything and in Haiti, I was still called by my middle name and not my first.
