yes..all the time..especially being natural, its harder/takes even longer to actually see the growth even when you do have it.

i just keep my hair in a ps style month by month and try not to think of it as much..i love that surprise you get once you take it down and see how much growth you have got

the best way to notice your hair growth is to take pics about every month or so.

I know hair always grows, but on average I probably get 1/4 inch a month without growth aids. My hair seems to be in a 'resting' phase now, so yeah, I feel like it's not growing.

Sometimes I feel like that! I take pics of my hair at the beginning of every month so I can reassure myself. I have major shrinkage, so I just stretch my hair out and I when I look at my pics I see that my hair is growing, even if it's just a 1/2 inch.

PATIENCE IS KEY LADIES!! lol..
i never feel my hair isnt growing (b/c i know for a FACT that it is)..but I do sometimes feel its getting thinner.. which i sincerely HATE.. but then again, you are your worst critic.. so I'll let you ladies be the judge of that when I post my BHM ANNIVERSARY PICS!!!!! woop woop! (2 weeks y'all ^_^)

Sometimes I do because of shrinkage. It's hard to tell.

I do sometimes, but my progress pics always tell a different story. If my hair is not longer, it will be thicker and then a lot longer by the next progress pic.

I'm not sure, but this is just how I feel. Shrinkage is something else. I measured my hair this morning and I have 1/4 growth in 2 months. I am doing everything to include growth aids. But on the positive side, my hair is very healthy and that's what is most important to me.

Well I've just found out my hair is the slowest growing hair around.  I never understood from year to year why I didn't see much progress.  I was sure my hair wasn't breaking because every strand from my hair had a bulb at the end.  When i first joined these boards, i measured my monthly growth for the first time and was disappointed to see that i only grew a quarter of an inch per month.  Anyway, fast forward seven or so years and my hair is now about one inch from waist length which was beyond my expectations but it's taken all these years to get there.  Other ladies whose hair was shorter than mine years ago surpassed my length and are at tailbone length now.  Anyway, three weeks ago i decided to do a spot dye test to see how much i grew for the month and i have one more week to go until four weeks and i'm really really really disappointed to see that I've only grown about 4mm in three weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!  No wonder I it seemed as if i grew an inch per year as it seems i literally had... annoyed is not the wordAngry

That just goes to show you that persistence and consistency pays off. There are people on the hair boards who have been on for 5-7 years with much faster growth rates and yet they've only gone from SL to APL because they weren't taking care of what they had.

I know it's annoying to you that your hair grows so slow, but at least you know how to work with what you've got. And you have the type of patience that I admire. You prove that it doesn't matter how slow a person's hair grows, they can still get to their goal if they just keep on pushin'.

Thanks for your optimism but I would agree with your kind words if it took me two years to go from just past shoulder length to one inch from waist like many hair accounts i've read  and seen over the years.  In fact, it seemed I was stuck at bsl for way too many years, again the hair wasn't breaking but seemed to remain 14 inches from root to tip.  It's now shifted to nearly 17 inches but has taken over 2 years... CRAZY!

As I continue to live, there is nothing I can do but let my hair continue it's slow trail to wherever it will endSleepy

Yep, I do. I am sitting here 4 months post, and I dont think I have nearly as much new growth as I should have. But I am working with three years of doing damage to my poor hair, hopefully it wont take that long to nurse it back to health......:(  But I won't complain. Thanks to you guys I have hope. Lol.

My hair seems like it's growing in slow motion. I know I trim often, but even without trims I don't even retain 1/2 inch a month :( I grow about 1/3 inch a month normally, but in the summer I get close to 1/2 inch. I'm hoping for a helluva growth spurt so that I can be full bsl/mbl by June

It only feels like that because you may be thinking about it too much. Just go a couple of weeks or even a month without thinking about hair growth, hair products or anything else hair and you will probably notice a difference.

Yes!  But I learned to be patient, faithful and most importantly stick to a strict regimen and growth will happen.

Also, wearing wigs and not taking monthly progress pics have curbed my doubt that my hair isn't growing!

Hi China!

Question- what is your hair care regimen and is your hair natural or relaxed? I just grew my relaxer out and now I'm trying to grow it out volume & length wise, so what do you suggest?

I'll take any other advice from commenters as well. Have any of you tried an essential oil mix to promote growth? If so, what oils (in what quantities) do you suggest and how do I use it? I keep hearing jojoba, rosemary & lavender but I want to be sure before I try it.

I'm at APL right now and would like to be at WL by Dec 2011.

Thanks guys!

Hi Kindof and welcome to BHM... you'll find a lot of great advice and support here.

I haven't relaxed my hair for about 11 years so it's all natural and previous to that i didn't relax for many years (or maybe I just wasn't allowed to).  Anyway, my regimen is simple:  I wash once a week with my mixture of amla powder, honey and warm water and massage this mixture onto my scalp and hair for as long as possible then leave for hours or sometimes overnight.  After rinsing with tepid water, I let the cold water close the cuticles.  Lastly I pour a panful of apple cider vinegar and water as a final seal.  I plop slightly to mop up the excess water then evenly massage a dollop of my butter mixture which includes coco and shea butter, vitamin e and wheatgerm oil.  (I also use this medley on my skin and face).  I either leave the hair to airdry in about 10 plaits or wrap the hair around itself in a bun and let it drip dry.  Once a month I apply aphogee emergencee to the ends of my hair only (with gloves on) - I try not to let harsh chemicals absorb into my skin as much as I can hence the natural products I make at home for hair and skin.  I've been on this same regime for about 3 years.  Before that, it was all about henna for a couple of years until my hair was getting a bit too straight for my liking so I stopped and continued with amla instead.  As soon as I joined these boards, I was obsssed so suffered no set backs and my hair was just beyond shoulder length.  I also haven't cut my hair for about 3 years because considering it grows sooooooooooooooooooo slow in the first place and my ends are healthy I figured why should I!  AND, haven't used a comb or brush in about 4 years... i finger comb only.

I was one of those girls at school who always had short hair because my mother had no clue about hair care:  you know, ripping through tangles, raking through hair with small combs,  drying hair with a towel until bone dry, using grease, not conditioning, shampooing hair until squeeky clean ...  whereas only through these hair boards (nappturality, bhm, longhaircare, growafrohairlong.com, curlygirl, plus others) have i learnt how to care for my own hair and that it must be treated super gently.  Actually I noticed Phoenix responded to this post and her hair I admired for many years.... now this girl had really long hair back then so it must be dragging the floor today!

You should absorb as much info from these boards and stay on track... in no time you'll see the results!  Well, at least you'll see it quicker than my barely .5 cm per month.Smile

@China

Wow! You've been natural a lot longer than I! I hope I can stick with it as long as you have. Thank you so much for all of your advice. I had never heard of the amla powder, but I'm definitely going to look into it and check it out. I've actually been lurking on these boards for about 3 years now, but just recently got up the courage to post and ask questions, so I've definitely learned a lot and still am learning!

Thanks again for your reply.  May you continue to have naturally beautiful hair!

I just looked at my fotki and realized that I have made absolutely no progress since DecemberUnhappy I know that my hair has been growing, because I have ng, but after a 2 inch trim in December and a 1/2 inch trim last month, I'm still the same length that I was in December. I guess my goal should be to maintain thick ends so that I won't have to trim so much. People with slow growing hair have to retain or else it'll take forever for us to reach our goals

NO Angry I wont let you!!LOL Have u ever hidden ur hair like under a weave? I am going to hide my hair under a weave this summer (and the rest of the year to aid my transition) May be a weave for a few months may show progress.

I never feel like I'm going to give up, but when I read people only took 3-4 months to go from SL to APL or even 6 months...I'm kinda like hmmm, I should be there by now!  But I do notice progress and at some point his year I will be able to claim APL.

Hearing that other people feel the same way I do actually is comforting and encouraging.

This is me too.  But I did trim about 3/4 of an inch today, before my touch up which will be on Sunday.  Whatever.

ETA You know I can't really get frustrated.  I haven't drank 8 glasses of water everyday, upped my protein or even applied mt/mn consistently.

It's like someone bustin their butt working 2 jobs to save up for a house and when they buy one everyone just sees the results and not the hard work that was done EVERYDAY to get that house.

I promise myself to be more diligent after this touch up on Sunday.

No, not yet.  I been looking into different things that I can try so that I can see more of my growth.  I think my hair grows but I dont really see it.  Do you think tea or coffee rinses would benefit my hair? When do u do them, after you shampoo, before you deep condition?

Sorry bella I have never done them so i don't have any personal benefits of them. But there is really good info on youtube about them.. I hear that they contribute to alot of growth.. it might be something you need to try to help with your 4 inches..

I know naturals complain about shrinkage but I think it hits relaxed heads just as bad...new growth is no joke and it poofs up and consumes all the length until you relax again Ouch

I feel this way ALL the time. My only true way around it is that I know that hair must grow as long as you're alive. Sometimes I feel my hair just won't grow past NL no matter what.
Now China's story is a true inspiration because I could almost swear my hair grows about 1cm a month. It's funny, I used to think my hair grows really fast b/c my cornrows always get old-looking after 2 weeks. I haven't had a perm since 2nd week of Feb 09 and I still have a TWA! I decided to just follow the hair care rules and pretend I dont care anymore. I'm now hiding my hair in long kinkies. I think I'll be hiding my hair for a very long while so I dont notice it anymore. It's better to do this and take care of it anyway I can than to completely forget about the hair growth "game". I'm happy my hair's very healthy though. I'll continue because I've always wanted a long natural hair.
Thanks for sharing your story China. Makes me feel hopeful

It feels like my hair is growing at a snail pace. I recently ordered a multivitamin and 5,000 mg of biotin. I'm tempted to do box braid extension until summer arrives. I'm not sure yet.

I feel like my hair isn't growing although I know full well it is.  Even when I do note some progress, I still can't seem to accept it. It will be longer than it was when I last checked, but it still seems the same length to me. SMH. Never satisfied.

Yep! That's why my hair is currently in braids.

Everyday I just know my hair has to be growing....even though there are times when I don't feel like it is.

I know ppl arent supposed to compare growth rate with others, but when my bf or father shaves their facial hair, by the end of the day some stubble has come out...I know facial hair is different than head hair, and male hair growth may be different than females,  but to me it just proves that hair is constantly growing...even if its a micro-amount everyday.

Yup! Every since I did the BC I have been watching my hair light a hawk and it seems like it is not growing at all! I am getting a full sew-in for my sanity.

I'm transitioning and I basically assume that my new growth is going to be the exact length it was before I got this weave. I think I'm a slow grower...although I've never measured. It might all be in my head...i dunno.
