I actually took what West had to say a different way, but I had to ignore some of his past hissy fits in order to do so. I looked at what he said in general way--that MLK as a symbol should not be used in the politican arena, especially since much of what our government does is the very antithesis of what he stood for. I wasn't concerned about the bible stuff, I was more interested in the grander implications of his statement.
West, when talking about President Obama specifically really does need to have a whole stadium full of seats.

I think he is coming from the angle of MLK being more of a pacifist and the Obama administration being quite hawkish. I can understand that point of view.
However, MLK's greatest push was for people of all color to have an equal opportunity - we are not quite there yet, but a black family in the White house for a second term was probably beyond his wildest dream. I cannot believe that he would be take offense to our first black president using his bible.

Wildfire, you're the only one acting "crazy"
This thread is completely appropriate
OP didn't post this in President Obama's Official inaugural topic, she was classy enough to make a separate thread all together
If you "don't want to have it today" then why are in this thread? Why are you trying to muffle the discussion when you don't want to talk about it? Dismiss your self and go be "positive" somewhere so that the rest of us who want to discuss the actual topic and discuss it

My thoughts exactly..

did Dr. Cornell write this article today, specifically for the inauguration?
why was this posted here today? on a black website?

Nope.
He said it several days ago at some conference. He even said in front
of Newt Gingrich that Romney as president would be a disaster. He was not dissing the president. He was asked a question and gave his honest views. |
Honestly, that is dissing the president.
I
mean think of the timing, even though he didn't go out of the way to
say this and rather was asked his opinion, the result is still the same.
A mere days before the inauguration you freely state that you feel
"some kind of way" about Obama using MLK's bible. How can that NOT be
viewed as a form of shade?
Everyone is entitled to their opinion,
and sure he can scapegoat by saying "well someone ASKED me what I
thought, I didn't volunteer my opinion", but the result is still the
same. And since it's not the King family saying this, but some 3rd party
(Cornell West), it really has a sour grapes/attention grabbing ring to
it.
If the King family was hesitant to let Obama use MLK's
bible, and only agreed after much arm twisting, I'd understand West's
statement better. But who knew MLK better than his family? And
who would have more of an incentive to want to ensure that they only
align things from MLK's legacy with people who are in line with his
teachings?
West's statement is honestly overreaching - with an
implication as if he knew MLK better than the King family and infers
that if MLK were alive, he would have vetoed Obama's request. THAT'S the
issue I take with West's statement. He's not the mouth piece for the
King family. He needs to stick to other topics.

Good comment Model, and I do agree. West is not a mouth piece for the King family. Dr. King's sister stood looking with joy in her eyes as President Obama used King's bible........ West is very self serving in my opinion.
