I used to be in favor of fines for truancy, but I no longer am. I think there are much better ways to prevent it, or punish it if you need to.

School transportation should be treated like school breakfast/lunch, it should just be provided. That way poor families don't have to rely on unreliable rides, cars, the expensive bus system, or walking in unsafe neighborhoods. I just saw a video on upworthy about a school district that is completely walkable for every student which is another option.

Then if children are still truant, truancy court should be used and the whole family should be a part of it. If the whole family receives a punishment (like in school service or community service), then thee whole family will be invested in making sure kids show up to school. And connecting this with school and child protective services monitoring is much better than fines people can't pay.

It is really deep.
It's only being done because the schools miss out on money when there are empty chairs. If they cared about this woman's family she should have had social workers helping to help get to the cause and fix the real issue.

This is an unfortunate situation, very sad and I'm sure the attorneys are drooling over this case.

Many of us know of children who've missed 1/3 or more of the school year or been held back because of trifling parents.
The child suffers but the parent's life should go on as if nothing has happened??

For excessive absents the parent should share the consequence. Control your child if they refuse to go to school or get help but don't ignore your child's education and don't ignore the fines because books and supplies have a cost.

CA may not hold the students back but a parent can and for these parents, there should be consequences. A recently divorced woman kept her 3 children home for an entire school year so she could "get her life together".

So I'm guessing some of y'all didn't read.

The article said 55 times since 1999. That's 15 absences per year and depending on how many children she has(7), it's totally plausible.

Yes this is BS and yes I feel bad for her kids! Without a mother over some BS.
