Philadelphia Newspaper Calls Asians “Chinky Winky” and “Dinky Doo”

Publisher Jimmy Tayoun says it’s a “proofreading error.”

UPDATE 8/25 1:10 pm: The newspaper editor responsible for the Asian slurs has been fired. For the full story, go here.

ORIGINAL:

In the August 21st print edition of the Philadelphia Public Record, the free weekly tabloid published by former Philadelphia City Councilman turned federal inmate Jimmy Tayoun Sr., current Philadelphia City Councilman Mark Squilla is pictured at an event in Chinatown with, among others, "Chinky Winky," "Me Too," and "Dinky Doo."

"It was a proofreading error," Tayoun told Philadelphia magazine on Friday afternoon. According to Tayoun, the editor who used those names did so because he didn't have the actualnames. When we pointed out to Tayoun that there were actually more names than there were people, he reiterated, "It was a proofreading error." And when we asked why the editor didn't use a generic placeholder instead of an ethnic slur, he insisted that there's no prejudice or bigotry involved here.

"That editor is a Britisher," Tayoun explained, puzzlingly. "He didn't mean anything by it. ThePublic Record is the most inclusive publication in Philadelphia.

Newspaper Employee Fired for “Chinky Winky” and “Dinky Doo” Asian Slurs

From “proofreading error” to fireable offense.

Just a few days after Philadelphia Public Record publisher Jimmy Tayoun Sr. (pictured)shrugged off the Asian slurs that appeared in last week’s edition of his newspaper, chalking them up to a “proofreading error,” Tayoun has terminated the responsible employee.

In the August 21st edition of the free weekly tabloid, Asians seen in a photograph with City Councilman Mark Squilla were captioned as “Chinky Winky,” “Dinky Doo,” and “Me Too.” When we reached out to Tayoun about the caption on Friday, he told us that we were making something out of nothing. “Nobody is offended,” he said. “Stop trying to start trouble.”

But Tayoun was wrong. Plenty of people — Asian and otherwise — were offended, and outrage ensued, with talk of a boycott of the newspaper's advertisers, which include car dealers and potential mayoral candidate Anthony Williams.

As we reported earlier, the newspaper was forced to issue an apology, and now, according toDaily News scribe Chris Brennan, Tayoun has fired the unnamed employee. "We don't want to add fuel to the fire," Tayoun told Brennan.

Quote the editor who used those names did so because he didn't have the actual names.

let me get this straightLOL.   this newspaper is claiming that since they did not have the proper names for a photo they decided it was best to make them up, not do a reference check but simply make sh*t upStern Smile

i wouldve just gone with the racist prick angle before i discredit my entire newspaper and say fukk journalism ethics and standards...but thats just me
