oddly enough...when i wear my hair straight or curly, i "pass" for east indian, middle eastern, armenian, greek, egyptian, etc. all those kinds of people (plus many whites) have genuinely inquired if i am of that kind of background on countless occasions. so i def dont pass for white, but i pass for "non black" other, sometimes....

When I my hair is super straight I get questions of being "part asian" and/or "part white".
When my child (his father is European) is with the nanny, people ask if he is hers. She's filipino.

When I was younger I used to get the "what are you?" question all the time - all the time. Not anymore. I guess as folks get older they just wonder from afar.

They are my paternal mothers -- The Sanders Women. Their story begins
near 1845 in Shreveport, Louisiana. This historically significant
narrative moves off the slave plantation, up the Great migration,
through Chicago's Jazz band scene, the roaring twenties, into the Great
Depression in Harlem and the Civil Rights movement of the 1960's.The
sisters, passing for white at will, glided between the chorus lines of
the Cotton club uptown to the Zeigfield Follies on Broadway. Included on
the recordings are stories of ommunist recruitment meetings, J. Edgar
Hoover's 'other' life and the American Negro Theater in Harlem. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vbr2E0oS_-A&feature=player_embedded
