Monopoly will add the cat token to its popular, long-running board game, replacing the iron.
Last month,
Hasbro let
fans vote on Facebook
for which of the five suggested pieces they would like to see
introduced, in addition to which of the existing eight should be saved.
After 250,000 responses, it was announced this morning (February 6) on
Today that the cat managed 31% of the total vote, beating the robot in second place as well as the ring, helicopter and guitar.
Meanwhile,
the iron picked up the least amount of support, losing out to the dog,
race car, battleship, top hat, thimble, boot and wheelbarrow.
The
vote to save reportedly went down to the wire, as the iron - which was
only backed by 8% of votes - was tying in last place with the boot and
wheelbarrow last night (February 5).
The dog topped the 'save' poll with 29%, with the top hat in second place.

Votes
came from 185 different countries in the end. For Britons, the thimble
was the least popular existing token, while in America, the boot was
bottom.
Eric Nyman, senior vice-president and global brand leader
for Hasbro Gaming, said: "We know that cat lovers around the world will
be happy to welcome the new cat token into the Monopoly game.
"While
we're a bit sad to see the iron go, the cat token is a fantastic choice
by the fans and we have no doubt it will become just as iconic as the
original tokens."
