^^ very true...some of the prettiest nursing homes back home in Indiana were the worst offenders. Beating the residents, stealing, stealing their meds, etc. Horrid...I would really have to think twice about putting a parent in a nursing home. I'd rather get a home aid so I could watch them.

They would take shifts . The lady died at the age of 102 . My parents passed at home a few years back.

lol India, I would not put it past any of them.

ModelBusiness, I think that's what made this so horrible. The nurse calling 911 truly sounded like she did not care and calling 911 for the dying older woman was a hassle.

I don't work in the medical profession, I wonder how often these care givers become desensitized to death and the dying?? The nurse definitely seems to be lacking sensitivity, by her demeanor you'd think she was speaking about a car dying.

I'm a nurse and I've never heard of a policy that says you DON'T perform CPR on ANYONE,unless they have a do not resuscitate order.I'd be afraid to live my last days out at any facility that has that policy.

Nobody is obligated to perform cpr to anyone unless they are employed in healthcare and are trained to do so. Untrained people are not encouraged to perform cpr, so there's no OBLIGATION to perform it. This article doesn't mention the resident's code status, unless I missed it somewhere. And survival rates post-cpr outside the hospital setting is very low.
Anywho, unless the patient in this story is a DNR, the nurse is supposed to perform cpr without being told by anyone. Unless she is untrained, then she has no business working in healthcare.

As a CNA myself (I'm taking the state exam this Thursday...wish me luck!!), we were informed that a person should not perform CPR unless they are trained..because they could end up doing more harm than good.

I encourage everyone to take a CPR class and get certified. You do not have to be in the healthcare field to do so. It was part of my tuition so I have a CPR card, but separately it's only like $60. You could save a life!

As a (future) nurse, it is my duty to save lives - policy or not. I can't let someone die knowing that I could have saved them. My heart would be so heavy Broken Heart

The woman on the phone was a trained nurse since she kept announcing it to the dispatcher, but according to the news report, the facility didn't hire her on to be a nurse but rather an admin of some type. So, technically, I guess she could claim that "saving a life" wasn't in her job description for that particular place.

But the fact that she kept telling 911 that she was a nurse just made the whole thing 10x worse.

Good luck! Just be sure to know the code status whenever possible..........that could also be a liability Wink

True, those yt nurses that's been in the field for 150+ years are the WORST offenders! Working in the medical field as a patient tech for 10+ years, the things I've seen and heard.......smh

I think a lot of them DO become to desensitized to the sight of death, especially when performing post mortem care in one room, then having to go into another patient's room acting happy and cheerful...

India is right, if your heart ain't in it, stay away. People would ask me all the time was going into nursing and I'm like "Hell naw!!" It's too much! Being underpaid and understaffed is major problem all over this country's hospitals......so, no thank you. I'm getting outta this business anyway.

Ok, enough rambling, that was a messed up situation for the patient and one of the LAST places I'd ever wanna be is a nursing home!
