I wouldn't expect much to happen with a white witness and actually reporting to HR. OP you might have to take that L and keep it moving.

I agree with a paper trail. Email with summary; and ask if they can provide you a copy of their report/log info.

don't let it slide. go above them if you have to. make sure he never opens his mouth to utter such words (at least not to your face) ever again. 
Make sure you include that you said, "excuse me?" and he just blatantly ignored you.

that in itself is another problem...you need to document that as well. start drafting emails. even if you think that nothing will come of it, at least you are reporting it.
