I received a wedding invitation where the couple asked people to donate to their campaign on Kickstarter to make an independent film instead of buying gifts for the registry. I think that it's generally better to list your registry or whatever via wedding website or word of mouth but I didn't really mind.

I've never received and invitation specifically stating this.  In Japan, it is customary to give money as a gift, and it is an intricate process.  You can't just hand the couple cash.  You have to go to the bank to get new bills.  Then you have to put them in a special envelope.  You have to write the amount that you are giving on the envelope with a special pen.  Also, you can't give an even amount of cash (like $20) because it's bad luck and it means you want the couple to split up.  Finally, depending on how close you are to the couple getting married, you have to give a certain amount.  Usually it's $500 if you are an immediate family member, $300 for close friends and family, $100 for everyone else.  It is used to pay for your meal, the "thank you for coming" gift and the rest for the couple to spend on their new life.

After my best friend's wedding, I told people not to invite me to any more weddings.  LOL!
