Use everyday as an opportunity to educate your kids and teach each other about our history so you won't have to depend on your oppressors to make leeway and feign interest about our lives and accomplishments for a measly 28 days.

why are they trying to do that? Feb. is the shortest month anyway.

they are gonna try to sqeeze it into a week or something...smh.

for whatever reason, it reminds me of the "ethnic" hair care section of walmart, where every product that is marketed towards black folk is squeezed into 2 shelves, 3 if you live in a city w/ more black folk.

These kids aren't learning black history during black history month.

At my school we read the same excerpt from the I have a dream speech every single year, the end. The Cw might run little commercials late night where they talk about sojourner truth fun facts in a 10 second spot.

I hope things are different in schools now but if there isn't a large blk population at the school, I doubt it.

Yup.  This is why parents need to educate their children.

my school is mostly black and it hasn't changed. last yr, the staff was mostly white teachers and they did the typical mlk/rosa parks/insert other typical black ppl in their classroom

our black history program (which was in march Ermm) was some kid giving part of the "I have a dream" speech and some negro spirituals. that's it. and its been like that since I have been at that school, and it will prob. be like that this yr.

don't get me wrong, those folks are great, but the month shouldn't revolve around them. what about learning about Matthew Henson? or even more modern people who have broken barriers, such as black CEOs? we gotta think outside of the box and teach that all this stuff didn't happen long ago, black history is still being made.

ETA: there are so many tools out there that could be utilized, such as books and movies and field trips, but it's not. everything is recycled. it's frustrating. i know a black teacher that wanted to take her students on a field trip to ferris state to the jim crow museum and got denied b/c of "lack of funds"...but it was authorized for kids in a different (more white) school to go to detroit to see some play.

Yeah I don't remember learning much during black history month except for the same recycled information every year on people like MLK, Rosa Parks, etc. I'll be honest I've learned more in some of the Black History related threads on here than I have in school and watching black history movies/shows shown on television.
