My dad cut off my little sister's hair this morning. Her hair before wasn't there at the sides and most of the back, not bald but barely there vey tight curls that were only on her scalp. her hair in the middle was long enough (around nech length). He cut it all to one length - but not to the length of the 'barely there' patches which doesn't make sense as his aim was to make a fresh start.

I'm worried for her, she's only four but I don't want her hair to be short - its not her fault. Its been mistreated by my mother who struggles with her own hair anyway. My sister likes her hair in braids but my dad says in a month she can have them even though its long enough to braid.

Please can you guys tell me any child-friendly ways of growing her hair. I'm more than happy to maintain it myself, massage it every night and wash it and so on but I depend on your help.

Sorry its so long. Please help!Ouch

Wow I 'm sorry to hear about your little sister's hair. But don't be upset, it will grow back in no time. And it is good that she has a fresh start. By the time she goes to kindergarten she will have a healthy head of hair.

I think braids are a good idea. They are a great protective style. I believe the Crown and Glory technique is safe for children. I don't know if you are familiar with this site: http://www.growafrohairlong.com
But it has a great braid regimen.

Until she gets her braids, remember to keep her hair moisturized. A lot of people on the board rave about Kids Organic Shea Butter as a gentle moisturizer.

I'm sorry I could not be more helpful, I don't have any experience with childrens hair and I don't want to suggest anything to harsh.

Please keep us updated!!!

Awww!!! Don't worry, children's hair tends to grow extremely fast. Your dad seems like he had her best in mind, not all dadswould even bother with their daughter's hair!

I think you are on the right track with massaging and washing her hair. There is a childrens growth forum on the boards, you should check it out. And maybe print some of the info for your parents so they can help out too! I don't have any kids so I don't really know what is best for them...but I would assume that for children, less is better. Have a look around the boards and see what you find.

Does she just naturally have thinner hair, or had it become thinner in places due to the braids? If it was the braids then maybe its best she takes a "breather". Tight braids can cause hairloss.

Again, I'm not too familiar with kids hair. But I know you need to be as gentle as possible. I'm sure the moms around here will help you out! Good luck, and she's really lucky to have a sister like you who cares so much about how she feels!:)

Also - when I was a child, I had hair sooo short and fine and thin that my mom had to use those little velcro barrettes in my hair...But as I got older, I just grew masses and masses of hair. So maybe its the same with your sister?

Blackvine, I really admire you for stepping up to the plate and helping your sister out. I can relate to how you feel. Just come up with a regimen and STICK to it. Her hair will grow back, and it will grow back healthy! Welcome to BHMHug

I hope her hair will be beautiul one day (just like yours)!

I think she only had braids once (maybe 2wice) before she doesn't consistently have them. Her hair is thin by itself but maybe it was my mum not relaxing properly. I have told her countless times not to relax from root to end but she still does so is it possible these baldy patches are overprocessed? (I refuse her to relax my own hair)
Will try go out and get products tomorrow or the day after.

And thankyou mcelwee wife!Hug

She gets her hair relaxed regularly and she's only FOUR? It sounds like her hair got terribly overprocessed

I was gonna suggest just leeing her her braids and staying natural for a while....The key is to find her a great moisturiser and keeping her scalp clean.  Check Wifey's sis's fotki, its inspirational!
