Topic: My dad is making me get a relaxer! Posted: Aug 16 2012 at 9:56pm |
I always get braids and my dad made a decision without me to a hairdresser to put a relaxer on my hair because I don't take care of it apparently. What makes them think I'll take any more care of it when it's in a relaxer! I don't want to get one at all! I'm 16 years old and he won't even let me make a decision. It's not fair. I won't even take care of a relaxer!
What do I do? Please help!

If you dad is a cheapskate, let him know how much it cost to go to the shop on a weekly basis. Since you are a newbie, you are not knowledgeable to take care of your hair properly. Just a suggestion.

They are making me get a relaxer before I put it in braids. Sorry. That's what I meant

I have heard of this before and I can PROMISE you that you wont have healthy hair after you take your braids out. Alot of african shops suggest putting a hot comb through the hair before doing braids but a perm is the most extreme!!!
Please stand up for yourself darling, look up braiding hairstyles that dont require all of that madness.

better yet! Find a female relative and tell her how you feel and maybe she can help your dad understand whats up. I have a cousin who's mom died when she was two and I had to do her hair and pick out clothes because her dad had no clue.

Thanks. My mom died too, when I was 13. But my aunt was the one who probably gave him the idea!

I think this is outrageous, first off.
He probably has no idea how a perm works. If he had any idea how damaging it is, he might not make you do it. You might explain to him (and this is an over simplification, but not really inaccurate) that a perm works by breaking hair down and damaging it. Tell him about the risks, chemical burns, hair loss, breakage, allergic reactions. Maybe you can try showing him pics of broken, damaged, ear length relaxed hair.
Also, newly relaxed hair and braids DON'T mix. If you wear your hair in braids most of the time, I dont see the point of a perm. Anyway, you're the one who deals with your hair, not your dad. I'm sorry, but I think he should back up.
