But even new luxury buildings have to offer some low cost units in order to get the subsidies they depend on to build (in major cities)

If you really want to keep away from those beneath you, you might have to buy a house in an upscale neighborhood

Until then you just may encounter the poor

Well in her case, what's the REAL issue? She mad she has to pay that much? If that's where your friend wanted to live, then she has to pay. Especially if she wouldn't qualify or is too proud for section 8. If the person next door isn't bothering her, destructive, nasty then what's the problem? They qualify for section 8 and apparently the owner accepts it. It's something deeper here.

There is a difference between low-income units and section 8. Luxury apartments (well above market rate) have to have a certain number/percentage of units that are a particular percentage (maybe 30%) cheaper than the apartments in the building. I think the idea has something to do with slowing gentrification, etc.

It's a city by city thing. But section 8 has a lower financial threshold.

And I totally understand wanting to avoid it. A girl I knew lived in a building with section 8 units and her apartment would randomly smell like weed if people went outside to smoke. I'd be pissed off.

Basically this about folks not wanting to see someone who is supposedly beneath you on the same level or above you.

If that were the case, we wouldn't have homeless people in america. Everyone would be working or on a program.

Exactly. It's just classic entitlement issues. Be grateful that you're even able to pay that amount of rent to live in a place of your choice. It's just like so many folks I hear saying they wished they qualified for food stamps....usually the ones who make more than decent salaries.

I wouldn't wanna live near a bunch of section 8 tenants...

In a lot of cases paying 50 dollars for rent makes people less appreciative of what they have.... and more likely to cause problems...
