So just so I understand, AA's aren't allowed to get nose jobs, but breast implants or taking supplements to get a bigger backside are ok? This falls under that BS about "like yourself for who you are" but where do we draw the line? Anything you put on yourself that isn't what you were born with (exception being clothes) can be seen as a form of "selling out" to please the masses. Didn't we just have a 50+ pg thread on makeup vs no makeup??

people who are against nose jobs are probably against breast implants and butt enhancements as well.

eta:  getting the nose done is more motivated by fitting into the white standard of beauty vs pure vanity like boobs.  if you want a larger butt it's probably b/c of pressure within blk communities.

Not sure if I fully understood what you were trying to say but as far as boob jobs it seems like it's done more in the white community than in the black community. Either way all of this stuff is for vanity reasons anyway IMO.

it seems like ppl opting for the nose job do it b/c a thinner nose is prized by the white standard of beauty...it's deeper to me than a boob job.  i bet a ton of ppl want boob jobs just so they can fill out dresses.  there is no standard boob size with white or black.  your nose can be a definite ethnic marker that you're trying to erase.  why do Jewish, Asian, and African American reporters and celebs always have to get nose jobs?

Men play into that ish to an extent though too. Alot of times I've heard men say they don't want a woman with short hair because long hair is more feminine. Most of the time it's black men who I've heard say that though.

A lot of women look sexy with short hair though. I don't even get why long hair means "feminine". Youthful? Yeah. But take rih for example. She ooze sexy with that cut of hers.

No it's not Beyonce's "fault" that young people want to emulate her... actually that's complete BS
It is absoultely her fault that young people (Black girls in this case) want to emulate her. Is that not her ultimate goal? To have that much influence over young people? So yea, in that way she is responsible for the message she sends to young Black girls

Your argument reminds me of the "teenagers don't need condoms because they shouldn't be having sex" argument.  Yea, they shouldn't but they do and that's why WE older, wiser ones have to hold ourselves responsible for the message we send young people, ESPECIALLY when we are in a position to affect the masses

I guarantee this, while we're sitting here debating how good or bad her nose looks and whether or not it makes her an appropriate role model for black women/girls, Ms Bey is still making her millions giving not an eff about such things.

IMO only people who I know personally are worthy of role model status. As, you can't admire someone 100% when you don't know them personally and know what they're about when they're not under the microscope.

All this drama over her nose. It looked like a bad contouring job since clearly on the inauguration and her press conference, her nose looked normal.

So just so I understand, AA's aren't allowed to get nose jobs, but breast implants or taking supplements to get a bigger backside are ok? OT: I totally disagree with that mindset. I am SOOOOO for sex ed and providing condoms in HS, etc. I grew up in an evangelical household and can speak from personal experience that repressive regimes don't prevent things from happening, just makes them happen in secret. Pretending their is no problem is not an effective remedy. Education is the key to prevention or at least to doing things in an informed and intelligent way.

On topic:

My point is this: Celebrities by default are usually some of the most flawed people on this earth. So, wanting to emulate them is ridiculous. Parents need to present themselves as a role model rather than turning to television entities, politicians, etc to do the child rearing/provide moral compasses for them. At least that way, if a celeb/politico acts a fool, you're child isn't basing their entire moral compass on people they'll never meet most likely. If you're training your children to respect themselves, and see themselves as beautiful regardless of whether they're "high yellow" or darker than dark, then these celebs turning themselves inside out for the almighty dollar won't have an adverse effect.
