GATOR BAIT’: What it really means

By Simeon Gant

One old adage and title for a 1974 thriller, “Gator Bait” has recently resurfaced in the vernacular of both Whites and Blacks. Originally, the term is a racial slur, common in the southern states and often brushed off as just another “harmless” joke. But an even giving a deeper analysis into the origins of “Gator Bait” reveals a disturbing practice more common during the pre-Jim Crow era of America’s oppressive dynasty.

Otherwise known as Alligator Bait, the term derives from an activity conducted by white men, mostly in the swamps of Louisiana, Florida and throughout the South who hunted alligators for their highly sought-after resource of meat and skin. These alligator hunters needed to lure the larger bull alligators with human flesh and blood. During the slave era, African ancestors in America were only considered three-fifths human being. So without regard to the fact that these people were actually real, 100 percent humans, the alligator hunters kidnapped black infant and toddler children (babies), skinned them alive, tied their neck to a string and dropped them into the swamp, dangling them near the mouths of hungry 600 to 800 pound alligators.

A basic Internet search will provide scant knowledge of this little known American history, but one Black artifact collector who stumbled across a story by a white man retells the story on You Tube. The story is brutal as he vividly reveals an activity the white artifact dealer says his grandfather use to revel in. The collector asked, “What would these babies do?” The dealer answered, “My grandfather said they would just cry and scream.”

These black babies were stolen from their families, caged and then fed to alligators whole. The activity is retold in various forms from researched documents, most notably the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia in Michigan. Without question, we have progressed in this country — from overt racism and slavery to subtle forms of the same thing. Terminology like “gator bait” is considered a deadly threat to every black person in this country. For those who would like to see the clock turned back, the term is no less harmful than any other word once used as the language of men who killed families because they were African-American.

Today, many whites, conservative and progressive alike, balk at the discussion of slavery and racial slurs. Their preference is to move forward by refraining from discussing the past. However, when the past is resurfaced by individuals who use racist terminology, images of violence reoccur and acceptance of such language becomes dangerously close to history repeating itself.

I don't get how these huge companies with slave trade beginnings are able to continue on with their business when Rayshawn and all of his items will be repossessed if they found out he bought his Bentley and 100" TV with drug money.

I hate the use of the N Word and its variants, jungle bunny, coon, or any other slurs and I do not respect anyone that uses them. I remember an old BHM thread about 'gator bait' and I was sickened to read the stories about the origins of the term. I have never heard anyone say gator bait b4.

Just keep in mind there is no actual evidence of this occuring however, I would say that more likely this happened than not and I'm sure it wasn't as popular as lynching but there is too much imagery for me to deny its plausibility.

Photographer Delphine Fawundu-Buford, as she’d not heard of it before,  was bracing to connect to her horror and outrage, in a recent post for her blog, And She Don’t Stop. There, she describes how, last year, she encountered an archival photograph, then, subsequently, what seems like the entire history of racist ephemera, above, depicting African-Americans, especially infants, as alligator chum.

As she wrote,

In all of my readings about slavery, I have never come across this type of sickening activity. It just seemed so far out there, that I wondered, how could this be true?

It’s not exactly clear. For example, a 1923 edition of TIME magazine reported the following:

On behalf of the town of Chipley, Fla., the Orange County Chamber of Commerce branded as ” a silly lie, false and absurd,” the story (broadcasted a month ago through the press of the nation) that colored babies were being used at Chipley for alligator bait. In its issue for Oct. 15, TIME printed the fact that the report had been circulated, but in no wise vouched for its authenticity. TIME’S story was as follows: From Chipley, Fla., it was reported that colored babies were being used for alligator bait. ” The infants are allowed to play in shallow water while expert riflemen watch from concealment nearby. When a saurian approaches his prey, he is shot by the riflemen.”

The Louisville Herald: ” Florida alligator hunters do not ever miss their target ”

The price reported as being paid colored mothers for the services of their babies as bait was ” $2.00 a hunt.”

What is clear, however, at the very least, is that white people spent a lot of time imagining what the ferocious reptile might do to Black flesh.

For example, take a look at this postcard, below:

Racist%20Florida%20postcard

As Fawundu-Buford notes, by reproducing the text on her blog, the card, titled “Free Lunch in the Florida Everglades,” celebrates the purported food preferences of the local fauna:

THE FLORIDA GATOR
Have you met the Florida gator?
He is the champion negro hater.
Although he finds many things to eat
His favorite morsel is negro meat.
