I will be taking my sew-in weave out in two weeks. This is my second install and the last time I took my hair down there was so much shedding I felt like crying. Cry I did have the sew-in for about 9 weeks, so I was told the shedding was normal but it was a complete shock to me.  I want some ideas or product suggestions on how to limit the amount of shedding and breakage that may occur when I take down my cornrows and wash my hair.  I will be about 18 weeks post relaxer.  Thanks for your help.

I would start with a pre-poo treatment (moisturizing conditioner or favorite oil) and let it sit on your hair for 30 minutes or so before you wash.

I would then wash my hair in loose braids about 4 or 5 depending on the length of your hair. I would start with a clarifying shampoo to rid your hair of dirt/junk and follow up with a moisturizing shampoo. Next Deep condition with your favorite deep treatment preferable one that strengthens and moisturizes such as ORS Deep Replenishing Conditioner. Let that sit in your hair for 30 minutes with heat, rinse out and detangle gently with a wide tooth comb. After that apply your favorite leave-in treatment. I would go for protective styles such as a bun, try not to use heat because it's damaging.

I use to have this problem all the time until my last take down i learned so much from the ladies on this board..what did was:

I purchased:
Better Braids Unbraid Spray from Thumbs%20Up
Detangler (lots)
cheap conditioner that will give u a lot of slip
I got a rat-tail comb with the silver tip
wide tooth comb

-what i did was sprayed better braids in hair (drinched it) I had 2 bottles and waited a while and my braids started to get soft and unravel (at the ends)

when i started taking the braids down i used the end of the comb (rat) and started to take the braids apart( and my hair was a tangled hot mess i was like i am gonna have to cut my hair i was so scared)

when i would hit a spot that was really tangled or matted (in my case) i was get a spray bottle with the better braids and i also saturated the braid with the conditioner and it started to work a loose..

the key is that u have to go slow and have patience and this is someone who usually has balls and balls hair on the floor.

once all my hair was allose i then sprayed my hair with the detangler and adding the rest of the conditioner to my hair and i worked it through my hair with my fingers and then i took the big tooth comb and started seeing if i could comb through and it worked i had lots of slip and my bathroom was a mess but i didnt care bc i lost very little hair when i would have lost balls of it. hth

i must have purchased $40 worth of detangler bc i couldnt decide which one was going to be effective..also I didnt care for african unbraid spray my hair turned into knots from that stuff

I agree w/Binky
But also hair shedds on average 70-100 hairs per day, so what you are experiencing is very normal as long as you take them out gently and take care of your hair & scalp in the braisds

Thanks for your advice ladies! I am going to make sure I do a pre-poo treatment and get some of that Better Braids unbraid spray along with being patient and gentle with my hair.  I bought an Apohgee deep treatment conditioner to use after I wash.  Last time I took my braids down, my hair was still dry even even after conditioning for 1+ hours under a heated dryer.  Maybe I'll try that ORS pack for a follow-up a week after.  I am going to wait about 3 weeks after taking my braids down to get a relaxer.  Thanks again!

Yes. The ladies gave you great answers. Another thing is that, make sure that you keep your hair moisturize while you have the braids in or when it comes time to take them out, then they wont be in such good shape. Better Braids Unbraid is recommended for those with weaves. But I think if you dont have weave, you really dont have to have Better Braids Unbraids. That is just my opinion. But I already bought some Better Braids Unbraid, and it just sitting on my counter.

Thanks for this post - I'm going to look for Better Braids Unbraid next time I'm at the BSS.  I do braids a lot, so I'll do anything to reduce shedding/breakage when I remove the braids.
