It is advised to massage with oil, the oil provides lubrication, this helps to keep your hair strands from breaking as you manipulate your scalp with your fingertips (not nails). Also several oils, help to stimulate your own sebum production. Healthy sebum production=better hair growth.
When you go to a professional massage therapist they always apply some type of oil before massaging you skin. Different oils serve a different function and they make moving the skin easier. So if you have sore spots on your scalp or a tight scalp the oil will help to loosen your scalp along with the massage Friction.
Better results is to massage with oil.

well, I'm not exactly speaking from experience but I say a clean scalp and oiled hair contributes to hair growth. not to say you never want to put oil on your scalp, it's just that an over production of oil on your scalp can hinder growth because it clogs the pores. it's one of the causes of baldness. you don't want your scalp to be too oily or too dry, you want to oil your hair moderately and not everyday.

When I was doing scalp massages with oil, I noticed that my growth was a little faster. I usually did it before a cowash, with slightly warm coconut oil.
I still do massages before bed sometimes without oil, if I remember.

I don't really massage my scalp, but I would imagine that using some type of oil would be beneficial as oppose to going at it bareback Grace & Blessings, ~Moonglow

I think frequency makes a difference too. I don't do daily massaging with oils because it would lead to serious build up - especially since I only wash my hair 2x a month. But when I GHE, which is usually every other day when I'm wearing my hair out or under a flw (which I don't glue down), I do it on my scalp massage days.
I'm sure just stimulating the circulation on your scalp is enough, but I prefer to do it with a light oil like my growth aids GAO or LG.
