Im waiting for the day a black person wins for a role where they play a current character. Im tired of all these slave/maid/mammy variation roles
I understand the sentiment and I hope she and other black actors have the opportunity to receive accolades for more contemporary roles but you have to keep in mind that the characters in this movie are based on people WHO ACTUALLY EXISTED and survived unimaginable horror when they should have been dead considering the circumstances. So ultimately, it's about Solomon and Patsey and all the others. They deserve to be remembered.
and THIS is what I feel people fail to grasp. This isn't any D'Jango Unchained bullsh*t and the slave narrative is an ignored genre in literature AND in film. I honestly did not read slave narratives until college. There are very few actual movies, released in theatre, about slavery, very few. So when peopel say they're TIRED of it, I think wtf are you tired of?! This is why black people cannot connect to their past--bc we eschew it bc it makes us uncomfortable.
Fvck it I want a movie about Nat Turner. I want movies about Harriet fvcking Tubman. I want movies about coloreds who DID.sh*t.
They released a movie about fvcking ART during the Holocaust. ART. I was like
MOST people win Oscars and similar awards for playing REAL LIFE people.
She deserved her award. I know someone who attended the Essence women in hollywood event and she said there were only about 250 people there--and this includes agents, writers, actresses etc. Only 250 black women. It's a pitifully small pool.
